Ok so the reviews arent as great as i said, but th is series in general is a good place to start. One of the problems with coding books is that languages and development fields like android can change every month or so, so boks may sometimes be outdated. You might want to get a second opinion. Couldnt find a free version, so you'll have to dig a bit yourself
I'm also a newbie when it comes to Android programming, however I'd like to jump into it. I have a bit of a background in C++, but Java is entirely new to me.
