From my Research (Edit: I should clarify, these are what I've found to be considered the "best" buy--that is not necessarily the best pure performance, but the best performance/quality per dollar. Many other people have covered upgraded options that perform better, but a steep cost):

  • Best is a Good pair of Headphones + A Desktop Mic or ModMic.

  • Best Single-Unit, Gaming Headset is a HyperX Cloud variant.

  • Best Wireless is a Logitech G533/G933.

    Currently I personally use a ModMic + ATH-M50X's

It works great but I'm going to go to Wireless next because my cat is in love with laying on my lap and chewing on cables :/

u/SinisterHumanoid · 6 pointsr/pcmasterrace

ATH-M50x's with brainwavz pads since the stock ones are thin and will fall apart after a year of heavy use. And a ModMic.

https://www.amazon.com/Audio-Technica-ATH-M50x-Professional-Monitor-Headphones/dp/B00HVLUR86/ - $150~

https://www.amazon.com/Brainwavz-Hybrid-Memory-Foam-Earpad/dp/B00ZGGG3KY - $30~

https://www.amazon.com/Antlion-Audio-ModMic-Attachable-Microphone/dp/B00R98O6R4 - $50~

Of course if you already have a mid the ModMic isn't needed. OR for just twice the price cut the second cord attached to your skull and get an AT2020 and even a Scarlett Solo for the best sound possible.

https://www.amazon.com/Audio-Technica-AT2020-Cardioid-Condenser-Microphone/dp/B0006H92QK - $100~

https://www.amazon.com/Focusrite-Scarlett-Audio-Interface-Tools/dp/B01E6T56CM - $100~

Here's a few options. Depending on where you are in the world some might be more feasible than others. I'm talking from a UK perspective, YMMV.

Easily the best value headphone + mic combo period. I own two sets just so I can take loan one to people who haven't tried good headphones.

If you want to spend quite a bit more but get a bump in sound quality here what is I would consider mid-range recommendations. Even serious audiophiles don't need anything above this level. The DAC is not needed, and won't provide much of a bump in quality if you have a modern high-end motherboard.

Oh god are you serious? A mod mic is a thing, not a mod. You just stick it on your headphones. https://www.amazon.com/Antlion-Audio-ModMic-Attachable-Microphone/dp/B00R98O6R4?th=1

I assume you're in US.

Blue Snowball is worth while for $40 right now on amazon. Probably the best quality of the bunch

Samson Go Mic (2^nd Variant) is also good, but with a dekstop the mouting and positioning could be tricky. $37

ModMic w/o Mute is a great replacement for a headset mic, you can use it with any headphones, works great but the quality is absolutely nowhere near the previous two, price is right up there - $49

Hope that helps. Not much choice in this budget, you could also look at some ElectroVoice but remember you need to look for USB microphones because you probably have no audio interface.

u/jalbp · 2 pointsr/Twitch

Personally I have fallen in love with the AntLion ModMic just as of late. It attaches to your headphones/headset and produces a really good and clean sound.

For $55 its a pretty damn good mic.
https://www.amazon.com/Antlion-Audio-ModMic-Attachable-Microphone/dp/B00R98O6R4

If you was looking for a Cardioid Mic I would highly recomend the Audio-Technica AT2020USB+. Personally I would pick up a Refurbished unit and save yourself $20.

https://www.amazon.com/Audio-Technica-AT2020USB-Condenser-Microphone-Refurbished/dp/B016YL4POK/

Its cheaper than the Razer Seiren (by $54) but it costs $76 than a Blue Snowball but it produces a really nice and rich sound compared to the Snowball.

Two picks that you can't go wrong with are:

Open backs: Fidelio X2 + VModa BoomPro

Closed backs: Audio-Technica MSR7 + VModa BoomPro

Spendy yes, but these are essentially the top of the heap for great sounding, well built, comfortable, and easy to use headsets. Compatible with pc and most consoles, either of these should last a lifetime save for maybe the cords or pads which are replaceable. Buying 'Used - Like New' is an option to save a bit.

If you decide using a desktop mic is an option, then the DT990's have already been suggested. The ModMic is an attachable mic option that works with everything, but it adds yet another cord so it's not an option I'm particularly fond of.

If you decide the options above are just more than you really want to spend, there are a few good budget picks as well.

modmic is probably what i'd like you to try. it doesn't come with headphones but you can use it with any better with ones without a mic

u/benmrii · 1 pointr/headphones

I'm looking to purchase a good set of headphones and a USB DAC to augment my gaming desktop and ModMic. Basically my years old headset mic crapped out and everywhere I read I see the suggestion: get a ModMic and a good pair of headphones. So here I am, looking for what those, and the DAC, should be.

DAC: I'm leaning towards the Creative Sound BlasterX G5 after reviews and this sub's purchase assistant as the USB DAC, though I'm open to suggestions there as well. Honestly with that I'm just looking for: any reason not to? I should also state that I hope to run my speakers through it as well as sometimes I prefer to not wear headphones (sorry if that's blasphemy here!), so any other suggestions would also need to have a line out beyond the single headphone option.

Headphones: I would love good sound quality (obviously), surround sound ideally, but beyond that I would also really appreciate input on two major things: comfortability and size/durability. I will sometimes wear these for a long period of time, so I'd like them to be comfortable. Also, I have a large head, so I need something that can manage that through its size and durability.

Requested details:

Budget - Prefer to spend $300 (US) or less between the two, but will spend more if there's a good reason.

Source - Desktop computer, specifically the Asus Crosshair VI Hero ATX AM4.

Requirements for Isolation - Minimal. Used in my home and my PC is relatively quiet.

Will you be using these Headphones in Public? - I'm sure I'll use them elsewhere, yes. But primarily they are for gaming and movies in my home.

Preferred Type of Headphone - Full-sized

Preferred tonal balance - Don't know enough to answer so I'll say an overall balance is ideal.

Past headphones - Nothing special, this will be my first good pair.

Preferred Music - Very eclectic, from opera to hip hop.

What would you like to improve on from your set-up - Upgrading to a good pair of headphones for a more enjoyable sound and surround sound in games and movies. I'm currently limited to my onboard sound.

Thank you for your help!

Ps. I have tentatively ordered the Antlion Audio ModMic. If anyone has suggestions for a better one, I'm open to that, too.

I have a lightly used one. This is the one I have https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00R98O6R4/ref=od_aui_detailpages00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I have 2 base clasps the 5 wire clips, box case everything. I probably used it for less than 5 hours decided to go wireless headphones and a desk mounted mic.

I can do 30 shipped. It was bought in July 2016.

I bought it on amazon, discounted from 200 pounds to 100 pounds!

.. and i added the attachable Modmic 4.0

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Antlion-Audio-ModMic-Attachable-Microphone-Uni-Directional-Muteless/dp/B00R98O6R4/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1526494104&sr=8-2&keywords=modmic+4

so in total 135 pounds.

for the sound quality you're getting (these are considered entry level audiophile headphones) it's an absolute steal.

u/Mister08 · 1 pointr/CabaloftheBuildsmiths

That's a reasonably healthy budget that can get you a pretty killer pair of headphones. Do you prefer open or closed headphones? Open will have a wider soundstage, closed will have better sound isolation.

I wouldn't necessarily recommend anything with an included mic. The Hyper X Clouds are OK, but I feel like you can do better getting separate devices.

I strongly recommend the [Antlion Modmic](Antlion Audio ModMic Attachable Boom Microphone - Noise Cancelling WITHOUT Mute Switch https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00R98O6R4/). It sticks to the side of your headphones like you'd expect to see on a 'gaming' headset -- while having FAR better sound quality than most.

u/Obscure_Username_ · 1 pointr/Twitch

Most headsets with a mic built in are fairly terrible, so i'd reccomend the superlux hd668b's which give you really good audio quality, and something like a modmic which is also really good. (for $5 more you can get one with a mute switch)

Gaming headphones on the cheap are really bassy, and the mic is usually terrible. I use the superlux headphones right now, and there is a huge difference in audio quality coming from headphones 2 or 3 times the price.

My suggestion is a pair of Sony MDR 7506's + an Antlion ModMic of your choice (my personal choice would be unidirectional and muteless since I don't really have any use for a physical mute button and would rather save the cash). You can remove the mid when you want to just take the headphones somewhere for mobile listening, then easily put it back on because it connects with a magnet.

Now, if you want a wireless headset+mic, you might just end up wanting a gaming headset anyway, or at least a purpose-designed all-in-one headset. Still, I'd rather have the reliability, quality, and (barring a few silly phones) universality of a wired connection.

u/RileyMcKibben · 1 pointr/HeadphoneAdvice

Coming from a guy trying to get into the world of audiophiles, this is what I can come up,

  1. A DAC (Digital to Analog Converter) takes the digital signal, enhances it by increasing the bit depth/sample rate (Help), and converts to analog signals so it can be played through headphones or speakers.
  2. You would want an amp so you could drive the headphones more effectively and mitigate distortion as much as possible
  3. It would be best to go with amp for both the 80/250 ohm cans

For your last question, I would personally choose the Mod Mic 4 Omnidirectional attachable mic. From the demos I've heard, they give clear sound and can attach to any headphone you want using magnetics. Also, es mas barato (cheaper). Amazon Link

hyperx cloud(3.5mm)/cloud 2(usb) is probably the best headset under $100

Yea that's why, I always suggest staying away from turtle beach/gaming headphones but if you enjoy them then there's no reason to not get them. I always suggest a headphone +modmic combo. I always suggest Ath M50x plus the modmic, and if you do end up getting them it's always good to get this Sabrent if you don't have a sound card, it's needed for the mod mic to reduce the interference from your mobo, and has a chance to make headphones sound even better. In the end it's up to you, but I have a feeling you will enjoy this combo. And if you ever do end up playing on console, you can pick up an Astro mix amp and listen to console and PC at the same time.

u/nicking44 · 1 pointr/pcmasterrace

you can always pick up a non-"gaming" pair of headphones (for eaample the Audio-Technica m50x (these are going to be about 150 as is, but they're gonna sound a lot better then most "gaming" headphones in that price range

and then you can pair it with the mod mic(there are mutiple interations of these the one i linked is ~$50) so for this instacne the total is ~$200 with better audio, and the mic isn't to bad either.

u/rockdahouse1337 · 1 pointr/pcmasterrace

Instead of getting a "gaming headset" you would be better off getting some quality headphones (check over on /r/headphones if you want specifics) and something like a modmic, vmoda boom pro or one of many lavalier microphones. The sound quality is much better than what you get from gaming headsets.

Headsets are bad. Here's what I'd reccomend; get a DAC/AMP, like [this one:] (https://www.amazon.ca/Dilvpoetry-DAC-X6-Optical-Headphone-Amplifier/dp/B075YQ7YH8/ref=sr_1_10?ie=UTF8&qid=1517947690&sr=8-10&keywords=dac%2Famp), a dec pair of phones, such as these;, and a mic of some sort, modmics can work, but they seem a bit expensive considering you can get a full USB mic, with boom arm and pop filter, my preferred method, for around $20 more. Then, you'll have high quality audio for you and whoever you're playing with!

u/frisktoad · 1 pointr/GlobalOffensive

Don't buy any of that gamer gear. They are overpriced and quality is subpar. Go with these two these two; Sennheiser HD598 and Antlion Modmic.

Sennheiser HD598 are one of the best headphones for the price in the market right now. They are open-back, meaning that the ear cups are open, thus sound leaks towards your surrounding but external noise is also not isolated. If you plan to play at home it is a great choice. Moreover the soundstage is superb (since they are open back). The mic is probably the best you can get for $50. Great sound quality and it also attaches on the headphones.

If you want to make the headphones sound even better consider buying an amplifier and a DAC in the future. Maybe you'll want even a different, more advanced model in a couple of years.

Come by /r/headphones! The community is very friendly and you can dwell into more the audio world.

I have a similar setup. I use my QC35 with the cable, and I just use a modmic. The black magnetic mount isn't pretty, social used a sharpie to make it blend in. Games and voice sound so much better. The modmic doesn't have many great reviews, but it still works great. I got the older version because it was $30 cheaper.

If you want an upgrade from the zalman, I've heard nothing but good things about antlion modmics. It's slightly above your listed price range ($50-60), but you can choose between omni or uni direction, and with or without a mute switch.

u/charliefuckstick · 1 pointr/buildapc

It doesn't really make a difference if your audio outputs on the motherboard are properly shielded, which they basically always are anymore. The connector doesn't make a difference, the quality of the audio and the quality of the listening device do. Shitty audio will still sound shitty whether you use gas station earbuds or $10,000 headphones, usb doesn't have any benefits over 3.5mm.

These get spoken of pretty highly, though I can't personally attest to how good they sound. I've been eyeballing them for about a year, but my current headset is fine. Note that these are headphones and not a headset, they do not have a mic. They get commonly sold with this, I think specifically because of that teksyndicate video I linked above.

u/SKRUZO · 1 pointr/discordapp

I've got a set of Sennheiser Headphones and a Scarlet Condenser mic, however I wouldn't recommend getting a studio mic or even something like a Blue Yeti or Snowball just for Discord. Getting something like a ModMic which you can stick onto the side of any headphones would probably be better for gaming. If you're doing voice-work however, maybe a studio mic is right for you.

The overall audio issue arises when you've got a headphone/mic combo. I don't think it's literally the wires getting crossed, I think it's just an effect of using a single cable that has to be split into 2 cables for a PC. Once you have two separate devices, the problem seems to go away.

u/inssein · 1 pointr/pcmasterrace

I'm $15 over budget but this is the best I could find .

If you're not opposed to getting things separately, then I have some recommendations and suggestions. I know it's a lot of info, but I've explained in the least technical way I can. Ask me if you have questions.

I've used many headphones/headsets for gaming (AKG K52, AKG Q701, Audeze LCD-2 Classic, Audio-Technica ATH-AD700x, Beyerdynamic DT990 (600 Ω), HiFiMan HE-400i (revision), HiFiMan HE-500, HyperX Cloud, Koss Porta Pro, Monoprice Monolith M1060, Philips Fidelio X2, Philips SHP9500, Sennheiser HD598, Sennheiser HD700, Sennheiser HD800, Superlux HD662 EVO, Superlux HD668B, Superlux HD669, Superlux HD681 EVO, Tritton Pro+, Turtle Beach Ear Force XP Seven) and my recommendation is HD668B if you want a cheap headphone.

If you need sound isolation, then I recommend HD669 first and K52 second, but only if you need the isolation.

My ultimate recommendations are DT990 and AD700x.

HD668B:

SOUND

It has subdued sub-bass, emphasized mid-bass, and emphasized treble. Sub-bass is how deep the bass goes and is where rumble comes from. For competitive shooters, you don't want this as it masks or overshadows sound cues. Mid-bass is where impact comes from. Generally, you also want as little mid-bass as possible, but with HD668B, this isn't an issue, which brings me to its advantages. Treble is the highest frequencies and brings out details more. For gaming, HD668B has great clarity, which isn't far away from much higher priced headphones. It has clean bass and a little sharp treble. How you perceive the treble, largely depends on how sensitive you are and what your point of reference is. In games, the treble isn't nearly as bright as it is in music.

HD668B has a large soundstage and very good imaging and separation. Soundstage is produced by the headphone, not the game. It's perceived space and environment of sound. It's the size of the sound field around you. A small soundstage makes the environment around you sound confined or boxed in. With a large soundstage, the environment sounds much more spatial, open and natural. You can't comprehend it without experiencing it. Imaging is inherent to the audio content. It's how accurately the locations of sounds/objects are reproduced. Soundstage and imaging constitute positional audio. Separation is how you discern individual sounds from a range of overlapping sounds.

BUILD AND ERGONOMICS

HD668B has a semi-open design (as you can see with the vents on the earcups), so sound passes freely through, unlike closed headphones which isolate sound from passing through to some extent. The sonic benefits of an open / semi-open design are generally a larger soundstage and better imaging. HD668B has a lightweight and durable build without flimsy or squeaky parts. The earcups tilt and swivel. The earpads are shallow and have bad quality, so I recommend swapping them out with HiFiMan ear pads. A popular alternative is Cosmo ear pads. The self-adjusting head pad design works well on my head; it doesn't slide down, press upwards, or cause any hotspots. The clamping force is on the stronger side. I have an average sized head.

Mics & setup:

You can turn any headphone into a headset by adding an Antlion ModMic 4. It attaches magnetically to a base that you stick to either earcup. It's easy to attach and detach and uses a very strong magnet and adhesive. The mic has a flexible neck and can be tilted up and out of sight. It has a very good build quality and great sound quality for voice chat and casual streaming. It doesn't have volume and mic mute control, but you can use either of these: adjustR, BENGOO, [Fosmon](https://www.amazon.com/DualShock-Controller-Fosmon-Headphone-Playstation/dp/B01N2T5MQ7/ref=sr_1_2?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1505627462&sr=1-2&keywords=Fosmon+audio+controller],
Insignia,
Lucid Sound AdjustR.

If you're like me and don't like to have a mic in your peripheral vision, then you have options like Blue Yeti, Neewer Clip on Mini Lapel Microphone, Samson Go and Zalman ZM-Mic1.

You connect the headphone and ModMic, Neewer mic, or Zalman mic to the controller by using a TRRS Y-splitter. You can connect them to the USB port on PS4 instead by using an audio USB adapter. This doesn't require a Y-splitter as the adapter has separate jacks for the headphone and mic.

The Snowball and Samson Go connect directly to the USB port on PS4.

EDIT: To people who downvote, grow a spine and challenge what people say. Or are you just incapable of articulating an opinion or a counter-argument?

u/I_am_Nightwing · 0 pointsr/MouseReview

Not relevant to OP's post, but I recommend getting good cans and just adding Antlion's modmic.

It's a little pricey, especially for your first build, but it will last a long time and the quality on it is amazing. Plus it adheres to most headphones.
