Wall of text ahead. Please, read only if you are really interested...

What I usually recommend when someone ask for advice about gaming headsets is: Gaming headset are crap 99% of the time. They provide very poor sound quality, and any good headphone (literally, even 40$ ones) will sound far better than expensive 300$ headsets. The question is not if headphones are better than headset (the answer is “Hell, YEAH”). The question is, are they better for you?

What are you planning to use your headphones for? Just for gaming, or for gaming and music listening?

If the answer is “just for gaming”, then ask yourself if a Hifi headphone is what you need. Usually games don’t really need high quality headphones, since they provide low quality sound, and you will be more concentrated gaming than listening. In that scenario, everything will serve you, and gaming headsets have the advantage of the integrated microphone.

So, if you want something good for gaming, and just for gaming, with integrated microphone, then the only two headsets with good enough quality sound (aka don’t suck) are:

HyperX Cloud (70$)

Sennheiser G4me One (170$)

Both are good choices. Or go with any fancy RGB headset you find (Logitech, Razer, Corsair, Steelseries, etc), you will most probably don’t notice the difference while gaming.

BUT, if you plan to use them for music listening besides gaming, then keep reading.

Hifi headphones for gaming have the disadvantage of having to deal with the micro thing. None of them have microphone incorporated, and you must either use a desk microphone like this, use a modmic like this one. or if your budget is tight, something like this. The first one requires desk space. The second and third one are detachable micro, with an extra cable you’ll have to deal with. Any of them are a nuisance. Any solution is annoying. All of them are an extra expense that must be accounted. If micro is a must and you are not willing to bother with this solutions, please, go back to HyperX Cloud or G4me One.

Ok, so, you really want some damn good headphones, that also can be used for gaming! Keep reading, please (are you bored yet?).

You can choose Closed back headphones (the classic ones you have already used. Closed back models offer good isolation and do not leak sound. This is your choice when there are people around you, or you want isolation from noisy a environment.) or Open Back headphones (Open back models offer next to no isolation and will leak sound -and allow you to hear what happens around you-, but they are the best sounding models). Open headphones achieve the best sound, soundstage (feeling that sound is coming from around you) and imaging (ability to locate the origin of one sound).

If you are here because you want to get a replacement for a gaming headset, I would recommend you Open back, but since they don’t isolate, you must choose. If isolation is required, get closed back, if that’s not a concern, go open.

Some closed back cans:

Audio-Technica ATH-M40x. 100$. Balanced headphones, very good feedback from lots of people. Typical entry level headphones to the rabbit hole.

Sennheiser HD 598Cs. 125$. Balanced, very very detailed, great instrumental separation. Comfortable as hell, Very recommended.

Beyerdynamic DT770. 160$. V-shaped signature (lots of bass and lots of treble). Great for explosions, movies, and rock. Treble can be harsh if you are sensible. Get the 32 ohm version, as the 80 (may) and 250 (do) need an amplifier to work properly.

Those are some examples of entry-mid level of closed cans. There are lots more, depending of your budget!

As for open cans:

Superlux HD668b. 40$. Those are THE CANS. The best quality for low budget you can get. Hands down. Great soundstage, Bass light. They are not too comfortable, but pads can be changed for a deluxe comfort (extra expense). You are not getting anything better at this price. For gaming in a budget, this are the headphones you were looking for,

Philips SHP9500. 80$. Mid-forward signature. Good soundstage, great comfort. Very detailed. Another amazing quality for the budget headphone.

Sennheiser HD 598 SR. 170$. Very similar to the HD 598Cs, but with open back. Wider soundstage, a little less bass. Very balanced headphones. Super-duper comfortable. Great for long gaming sessions.

Philips Fidelio X2. 250$. V-shaped signature. Those are in another league. Build quality is just.. OMG. Extreme soundstage and imaging. More comfortable than the HD 598. Bass is BOOOOOM!!!. A little pricey, and can be somewhat fatiguing to listen if you are treble sensible, due to high treble.

Well, that’s all. I have selected only headphones that don’t need an amplifier. Now is your turn to research, watch some Youtube videos, read some reviews, and give them a try.

All this headphones are GOOD. No trash here, and all them will make you open your eyes when listening your music if you are coming from standard headsets. You will notice sounds, instruments, that you never realized they were there, even if you had listened this song a thousand times before. Try them, and be amazed.

Welcome to the rabbit hole.

Headphones:

  • Philips SHP9500

Has a neutral/balanced sound profile, meaning the bass and treble (high tones) aren’t increased or decreased. It has no bass distortion. No sharp or harsh treble. It has very good clarity and detail retrieval. It has an overall great sound quality that’s not far away from headphones that cost several times more. Its weaknesses are soundstage, which is perceived space and environment of sound; imaging, which is how accurately sounds/objects are positioned; and separation, which is how well you discern individual sounds from a range of sounds. I judge headphones by how they perform competitively in FPS games. Soundstage and imaging are the stereo equivalent of virtual surround sound.

It has a durable and lightweight build. No squeaky or flimsy parts. It has an open design, so sound passes freely through, unlike closed headphones which largely isolate sound from passing in and out. The benefits to an open design is generally larger soundstage and better imaging than closed headphones.

  • Superlux HD668B

Has increased bass and treble. No bass distortion. The treble is a little sharp. It has very good clarity and detail retrieval. SHP9500 has better sound quality, while HD668B has much better soundstage, imaging and separation. It has a durable and lightweight build. No squeaky or flimsy parts. It has an open design.

  • Superlux HD681 EVO

This is my favorite for casual/immersive gaming among these headphones. It has a warm and fun sounding sound profile with neutral treble, rumbling bass and a large soundstage. The sound quality is on par with SHP9500. But it has poor imaging for competitive gaming. It has a durable and lightweight build. No squeaky or flimsy parts. It has an open design.

  • AKG K52

Has a closed design, so I recommend it only if you need sound isolation. It’s like a closed version of SHP9500 but with less clarity. It has a durable and very lightweight build. No squeaky or flimsy parts.

    Other experience:

AKG Q701, Audio-Technica ATH-AD700x, B&W P7, Beyerdynamic DT990, HiFiMan HE400i, HyperX Cloud, Massdrop x Fostex TH-X00 Ebony, Monoprice Monolith M1060, Philips Fidelio X2, Sennheiser HD700, Superlux HD669, Superlux HD662 EVO, Tritton Pro+ and Turtle Beach Ear Force XP Seven.

To put into comparison since most people know of HyperX Cloud, SHP9500, HD668B and HD681 EVO surpass it by far in audio. For closed headphones, I recommend K52. The Cloud is better in build quality.

Alternatives that are well-regarded for gaming in the audio community:

  • Audio-Technica ATH-AD500x
  • Sennheiser HD558
  • Status Audio OB-1
  • Status Audio CB-1
  • Superlux HD681

    ---

    Mics:

The sound quality is the one thing you can judge for yourself before buying by listening to sound tests on YouTube.

  • Antlion ModMic 4

Attaches magnetically to a base that you stick to either cup. The mic is very easy to attach and remove. It can be bought with and without a mute switch. The mic itself and the cable have very good quality. For volume control (and mute toggle), you can use a Fosmon, Insignia or Lucid Sound AdjustR audio controller.

  • Massdrop Minimic

Uses a very similar clasp system as the ModMic. It's also very easy to attach and remove. It's modular and comes with a mute switch. For volume control, you can use the aforementioned audio controllers.

  • V-MODA BoomPro

You plug it straight into the headphone. It has a mute switch and volume control. It has great build quality, with an aluminum gooseneck. The cable has great quality and is braided and tangle-free. It's compatible with Philips SHP9500 and Status Audio CB-1.

    ---

    Usage:

To connect the ModMic 4 and Minimic to the controller, you need a TRRS / 4-pole Y-splitter (three black rings on the connector). The BoomPro doesn't require a Y-splitter.

You can use a sound card, e.g. Astro MixAmp Pro TR+, or a digital-to-analog converter and a headphone amplifier, e.g. Audioengine D1, with the ModMic 4 and Minimic instead. With the BoomPro, you can't use an amp.

> I know most will proberly hate me for gaming but someone out there should love music and gaming.

??

Plenty of us game. It's a big reason to dabble in high quality headphones when it strictly gives you an advantage over other players.

Anyways, I personally use a standalone desktop mic (Blue Yeti) although Discord buddies hate it because it's super sensitive and you can't really do much about it.

A boom mic works too but you'll have 2 wires and that could be annoying.

For convenience I just like the desktop mic. I have a Discord friend who has one too and it really isn't that bad, it's just when someone types you hear every key clack.

u/[deleted] · 11 pointsr/buildapcsales
  • V-moda boompro is good if your headphones have a detachable cable. You can also zip tie it to the back of your monitor (using zip tie tiedown points) and have it stick out the side.

  • I currently use a Audio-Technica ATR-2100 on a scissor stand connected via XLR to a Scarlett 2i2. This is overkill for most people, but I find the scissor stand convenient and I already had the Scarlett 2i2.

  • On an extreme budget you can get by with a clip-on mic.

  • The Antlion Mod-mic is a bit more expensive at $55, but is really nice.
u/FatS4cks · 9 pointsr/pcgaming

You can get a cheap usb condenser mic. Not ideal over a more expensive xlr mic setup (watch the video I linked at the end, it explains a lot there), but for just gaming it's better than pretty much any headset. If you don't have room on the desk, there's the Antlion Modmic. Overpriced for the sound quality imo, but it should still be better than most headsets. I'm not sure if the a40s have a detachable cable, but if they do you can also get the V-moda boompro. I've used mine for a few years before upgrading to the ATR2500, and it sounds almost as good as the standalone mic and I like the sound signature much more than the Antlion. The only downside being some hiss that the condenser doesn't have, and it needs power from one of the channels for the mic to work, so you need to adjust the center for the headphones. Ideally if you're just using voice chat in games and in programs like Teamspeak, Discord, Mumble or whatever, the most you should be spending is around $50.

Here's a video if you wanna take the plunge and get something more professional for voice overs some time in the future.

u/Kornillious · 6 pointsr/buildapcsales

yes, but you would need to get a mic with it, that is what Im doing. the best one I could fined http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00R98JVVU?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=ox_sc_act_title_3&smid=A34JWT04R7KMFW

Gaming headsets suck, period.

https://www.amazon.com/beyerdynamic-770-PRO-Studio-Headphone/dp/B0016MNAAI

Get yourself a nice pair of well reviewed closed back headphones. Open back leaks more noise and tends to have a little less bass.

Then you need a mic you can attach to the side like a regular 'gaming' headset, only except now your audio is high quality.

https://www.amazon.com/d/Computer-Microphones/Antlion-Audio-ModMic-Attachable-Microphone/B00R98JVVU

Then if you want to improve the experience a little more, grab an external DAC and headphone amp.

Oh, where to start.

Ryzen 1600

- As you may notice, there is no additional cooler. This is because the 1600 comes with a quiet cooler that can hold up low to medium overclocking like a champ. Saves money, too.

SSD and HDD combo

- I would have gone total SSD if budget was less constraining. The SSD can hold your OS, browser and frequently used applications and games. The 1TB of HDD will supplement that nicely. (Can upgrade to this if you need more space than 1TB for VODs)

Case

- The SPECTRE WHITE from CiT is at an all-time-low sale right now. It's great looking, LED enabled, with built-in fans, and a card reader. Good cable management too.

Video Card

- The 1080 Ti will take care of all of your needs. It can process the game you are playing while encoding for the stream without issue. This monster is the star of the build.

Monitors

- One 24" and one 21.5". The 24" has 75Hz and fast response time. This is the screen you'd be gaming on. The other screen is auxiliary and will be used to watch chat, viewercount, streaming software stats and anything else going. It's still relatively fast, and still 1920x1080.

Keyboard

- This Rosewill is a great gaming keyboard. With Brown switches, you'll get all of the benefits of a mechanical keyboard with less sound. It's somewhat clacky, but not clicky. Great for gaming AND typing. Only downside to mention is lack of LED, but for extended time streaming, the room should be well-lit anyways to reduce eye strain.

Microphone

- Here's the oddball. This ModMic is a sound-cancelling, good-quality and small microphone that can attach to any pair of headphones. If you have a nice pair of headphones that you like to listen to music with, or find a pair that is more comfortable for long periods of time, attach this mic to it. Watch this or this as to why.

Those were the ones I used and ended up deciding to get a Sennheiser HD 598 with an Antlion Modmic Uni-Directional, which are an amazing combo.

u/ObamaIzHitla · 4 pointsr/buildapcforme

Your parts list is decent but;

  1. No need for that much wattage on the PSU. Also be sure and get a seasonic. 550-650w is ideal.
  2. I would get the ROG Swift over the AOC. When youre spending that much on something i would spring from the tried and true ASUS for just a bit more.
  3. That headset sucks. All gaming headsets suck. Get a nice pair of sennheisers. If you dont wanna spring for the 650 ive got below look for the 558 or 598. Both are superb. Philips SHP9500 is also fantastic and only costs ~$60. If you dont wanna spend all the money for a yeti, just grab a mod mic.
  4. For your side monitors i would just grab some cheap 1080p units with decent stands.
  5. 7700k >> 1700 for gaming.

u/OkibaKey · 4 pointsr/ffxiv

This one

If you feel like spending less and 50 bucks is too much for you, get the Sony EMCS3.

If you want to spend more you can get some nice desktop microphone set up.

The ModMic will fit your headphones side instantly since is just a small magnet and the quality of the microphone is professional.

Your headphones are perfect, tho try to reduce a bit the bass since they're bass heavy (but that's up to you).

u/Hopehellsucks · 4 pointsr/pcmasterrace

Lurk r/buildapcsales, There's always posts every few days that pop up for a great pair of headphones. Sennheiser, beyerdynamics, and akg just to name a few. Any of those paired with a standalone mic or modmic or clipon mic will always deliver sound leagues above

u/MHzBurglar · 4 pointsr/buildapc

If you absolutely want an attached Mic, I'd recommend this headset instead:
https://www.massdrop.com/buy/massdrop-x-sennheiser-pc37x-gaming-headset
It's cheaper and has better drivers.

The drivers in it are based on the Sennheiser HD598, which is a an amazing pair of headphones. I personally used the HD598 for many years before getting my HD6XX, and gaming on them was superb. The only drawback is that the bass is a little less punchy than some other headphones, but it's not weak. Overall they're vastly superior to the HD558 drivers used in the headset you're looking at.

---
If a built-in mic isn't super important, and you want a good deal on something even better (the HD650), wait for the HD6XX to become available again (they always come back every couple of months) https://www.massdrop.com/buy/massdrop-sennheiser-hd6xx

For a microphone with the HD6XX, You can get a clip-on Mic such as the Antlion for them, or use a desk mic.

---
For DACs and Amps, I'd recommend either getting the Schiit Modi/Magni combo, or the Fulla 2 if you want an all-in-one solution. I have both (I use the stack at home for gaming/music/media and the Fulla 2 for music at work) and they're both fantastic.

u/Zynismus · 3 pointsr/pcgaming

On-ear is also an option. Koss Porta Pro is cheap and has a lifelong guarantee, and then you could just stick an AntLion ModMic on it. Both run you just about under 100$.

Btw, a Blue Yeti is decent and also usually doesn't cost 100$.

I also wear glasses, and decent headphones aren't going to be uncomfortable, they just cost more. It's an investment, but if you want something cheaper and portable I think the Koss are very decent.

ModMic: https://www.amazon.com/Antlion-Audio-ModMic-Attachable-Microphone/dp/B00R98JVVU/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1525683488&sr=8-4&keywords=AntLion+ModMic

Koss Porta Pro: https://www.amazon.com/Koss-Porta-Pro-Headphones-Silver/dp/B00001P4ZH/ref=sr_1_3?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1525683534&sr=1-3&keywords=koss+portapro

Some other recommendations:

SoundMagic E10: https://www.amazon.com/SoundMAGIC-Noise-Isolating-Earphones-Gunmetal/dp/B005HP3OB0/ref=sr_1_3?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1525683563&sr=1-3&keywords=SoundMagic+E10

These will actually sound amazing depending on the hardware you run them on. The better the source, the better they sound. They can sound as good, if not better, than In-Ears that cost double as much! They're rather neutral.

Yeti Blue Snowball: https://www.amazon.com/Blue-Snowball-Condenser-Microphone-Cardioid/dp/B014PYGTUQ/ref=sr_1_3?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1525683616&sr=1-3&keywords=Yeti+Snowball

(Actually only 50$ right now)

u/Tater_Tot_Casanova · 3 pointsr/xboxone

Agree with the above comments re: good pair of headphones vs gaming headset. You’ll get better sound game / mic going this route. My current set up is as follows and it’s the best sound experience I’ve ever had ( if you don’t mind a few cords): Audio Technica AD 700x $100 + ModMic 4 $55 + Y split cable $15 to plug into the 3.5 mm port on your controller. The above is all I really needed to play but last week I also grabbed this Dac Amp. $65 and the whole set up sounds even better and doesn’t drain my controller’s battery life.

u/wewladendmylife · 3 pointsr/SiegeAcademy

I use a pair of DT990 pro headphones and attached one of these magnetic microphones.

I'd pick up a pair of over-ear headphones if you see one in your price range. If you need a mic you can pick up a lapel microphone for pretty cheap. I just find that most gaming headsets are overpriced for the sound quality.

u/alex_3799 · 3 pointsr/buildapcsales

90% sure those are ass, but these are supposed to be amazing. I'd just get a blue snowball though and call it a day.

u/dialpixel · 3 pointsr/youtubegaming

If you really need good quality audio for that price point, I would suggest you look into something that has a detachable cable. The audio technica ATH_M40x headphones are a great option. Then you can add on a Modmic that attaches to the headphones or even get a Blue snowball standalone microphone.

You can also buy a very nice pair of headphones and buy a standalone microphone that either attaches or plugs into your headphones

I use the v-moda myself personally because it plugs directly into the headphones (no extra wires) but I've also heard good things about the mod mic (attaches to headset, extra wire)

The ATR2100 is a damn good microphone which you can add into more complicated setups if you decide to upgrade later. It's dynamic and has good audio quality, as well as being both XLR and USB. As well as a stand which I use which is one of the cheaper ones, but gets the job done.

If you're looking for a headset style mic, then the modmic is decent.

u/BlizzardCanyon · 3 pointsr/xboxone

Regular headphones with Modmic

u/adm96 · 2 pointsr/pcmasterrace

If you're looking for a headphone that you're primarily going to use to game with, I suggest looking into open-back headphones.

Assuming you DO need a mic:

Philips SHP9500 + V-Moda BoomPro

Assuming you DON'T need a mic:

Audio Technica ATH-AD700X

Though these are above your price range, do keep an eye on them. Black Friday is near, so a few are bound to drop around the 100$ range.

Sennheiser HD558

Sennheiser HD598

Keep in mind that if you can always attach a ModMic to virtually any headphone you buy. So if you decide to not go with the SHP9500, this could be your next investment.

u/RossaF1 · 2 pointsr/xboxone

If you already have headphones that you like, you could always get a ModMic.

Although be aware that to use it on Xbox, you'll need a way to convert it to an input standard that the controller accepts (CTIA I believe). You can use the official adapter or buy a cheaper 3rd party one.

I've only had mine for about 2 months, but no complaints so far. Works fine on console and PC.

u/Jefafa77 · 2 pointsr/pcmasterrace

I come from the audiophile world, so a couple things I need to know before I offer any recommendations....
-Price, now I know you said "unlimited" but are you willing to include a DAC too?
-Listening preferences/uses, do you like music with a lot of bass or do you like a flat sound signature? Will you be doing competitive FPS where you might want more treble to hear footsteps easier?
-Environment, are you in a room by yourself or is your PC quiet enough where an open back headset is okay or do you want total isolation from any noise around you? (NOTE: open back provides better sound stage at the cost of you hearing stuff around you and other people if they're close hearing what's playing)

Last...AND FOR THE LOVE OF ALL THINGS HOLY.....DON'T, I repeat DON'T buy a gaming headset if you want good sound quality unless you want to fork over more money than you have to.

Having said all that, one recommendation is the Phillips SHP9500 with Vmoda boom pro (open back) all for around $100 IIRC on Amazon.

Another recommendation is the Phillips Fidelio X2 with before mentioned boom pro.

IF you want "f*ck all outside noise" the Bose QC 35 will work (mic cord included)

However, probably the best idea out there is the Modmic (link: https://www.amazon.com/Antlion-Audio-ModMic-Attachable-Microphone/dp/B00R98JVVU/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1503259595&sr=8-1&keywords=modmic) pick your favorite headphone and attach a mic to it)
Then you can completely go balls to the wall and get something like the ShureSRH1540.

Or just say fuck it and buy the Sennheiser Orpheus ;)

u/EMPIREOFDEATHGAMING · 2 pointsr/xboxone

Sorry but that mic won't work as a chat mic, here's a thread explaining why. What you need is something like this modmic.. There are cheaper options that will work but if you're going to spend +/- $150 on a pair of headphones for gaming, don't cheap out on the mic. Good luck.

u/Trickster5596 · 2 pointsr/pcmasterrace

If you have a good pair of headphones already, just attach an Antlion ModMic and you're good to go!

u/EmperorNarwhale · 2 pointsr/Rainbow6

If you can, get a pair of headphones and a separate microphone. They will blow any "premium gaming headset" out of the water. Gaming headsets are typically closed-back headsets, which limits your sound stage. You'll want a piar of open-back headphones. They also have to cram a lot more inside the headphones which typically results in something being of lower quality.

It seems you're on Xbox one, so you'll need one of the controllers with a 3.5mm headphone jack.

If you're on PS4, you can use the same items I have listed, and if you're on PC you don't need the splitter.

One of the best pair of headphones you can get is this one. The Audio Technica ATH M50x.

Then get an antilion modmic. It attaches right to your headphones with no hassle.

Then get this thing so you can use the headphones and microphone on your xbox one controller. (Yes, it works on Xbox One.)

All you have to do is plug your headphones and microphone into the splitter, and your splitter into your xbox one controller. Way better than a gaming headset, and way cheaper too.

You can even get better earpads for better comfort, if you want.

u/Arianfelou · 2 pointsr/parrots

I found out what one of our friends who also games + has birds uses, and he has an Antlion Modmic 4.0 attachment. It seems like one of the main differences might be that it only has about half the pickup range most of these gaming mics do? As in, it doesn't pick up as many high-pitched sounds.

EDIT: then again, it appears that tiels and budgies might actually have a lower range of hearing than humans do, anyway...? Though, some of the spectrograms of cockatiel calls seem to place them as able to reach ~15kHz (if I'm reading them correctly).

u/ManBehindtheLens · 2 pointsr/buildapcsales

Mutable option is on sale as well for $4 more.

u/AzusMobo · 2 pointsr/BudgetAudiophile

mod mic is a pretty good standard for headsets. Also if you have a 3.5mm jack, check these out.

u/redautumnleaves · 2 pointsr/SiegeAcademy

I recommend giving low-end audiophile-quality headphones a try, with a low-cost separate mic.

Madlustenvy's guide (https://www.head-fi.org/threads/mad-lust-envys-headphone-gaming-guide-5-6-2019-hifiman-ananda-added.534479/) is a great resource for folks getting more interested in gaining a competitive edge in gaming via sound.

u/rtm416 · 2 pointsr/HeadphoneAdvice

I'll second the 58x. It's what I upgraded to after using the 598's since the XBOne came out.

You'll need a microphone and a splitter, I use a Modmic with a Mic/Phones breakout. I'd buy two of those and keep the spare handy, as mine seems to give up the ghost every 6-12 months. I don't know if other splitters are better, but the one I linked is the 3rd one I've tried and it's the best so far.

EDIT: This probably should've been its own comment but whatevs.

u/lostfrog1357 · 2 pointsr/PS4

Yes. There are standalone boom mics for headphones that can be attached with magnets or adhesives. You'd just need a splitter with separate mic and headphones ports to plug into your controller, then you're good to go.

Edit: Antlion Audio ModMic Attachable Boom Microphone - Noise Cancelling with Mute Switch https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00R98JVVU/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_o-XYBbZ7N2A91 - Here's a great option.

u/TossMeAwayToTheMount · 2 pointsr/bapcsalescanada

I have the game one headphones (the semi closed one, not the zero) and it's alright. I prob wouldn't suggest it. The one I have I hear some plastic particle moving in there. it feels overall very "gamery" where it looks nice but has a cheap plastic feeling to it. Earmuffs are really comfortable and so is the actual cup itself, however, the clamp i find overpowering and have to switch headphone. Sound is good. Not spectacular, but good. It sounds like its got a sennheiser house sound but i can't confirm. Mic quality is passable, not the best (comparing to an xlr mic into an actual interface which gets way more expensive) but it doesn't matter for discord or voip in game, just don't do podcasts in these. I don't know if my unit is defunct, but when hearing recordings back I often cut out. I don't if that's a mic issue or pickup issue.

I have no impressions on the SHP9500 or the SHP9500s since i missed the train. My opinion is worthless here.

I usually avoid mic and headphones integrated together at all costs, they don't do each job better and are harder to find what the issue is. They are cheaper overall.

If i can add suggestions, I would say the m40x is fine. It's 15 dollars more but Audio Technica is pretty no frills and reliable. Granted, hit or miss on how they handle their marketing and lines. This will sound flat, they are monitoring headphones. It's audio the way the audio engineers heard it. Flat, boring, excels at nothing, fails at nothing. As for quality, it's really good. Very presentable outdoors as well (then again, so are the SHP9500/s) and function well for public commutes, etc. These are closed set, so less sound goes out (leakage), but the soundstage is more narrow. If these are too much, go m20x or m30x (mixed reviews) just to try them. m20x are 70 or so dollars, so way cheaper then the shp9500 is currently but the shp9500 would dip below that frequently. m20x has a really long heavy aux cable that is non swap able and comes with a 6.3 jack converter if you're into that.

And then get a cheap mic and the sound quality should be close to the same. If you want a more headset like feeling, get a modmic. this has better quality anyway, but is more expensive. Can be attached to any headphones. comes with stick on magnets that it can stick to so you can make your headphones civvy friendly again by detaching them. this comes with a mute switch. cheaper version comes without one. If you have any questions, let me know.

generally the best sounding setup will not be a "gaming headset", but just a pair of good headphones with a separate mic.

what is your budget? that is a big factor as there is a huge variety of headphones out there all across the price spectrum.

i currently use Phillips Fidelio X2's with an Antlion ModMic running through a beyerdynamic usb dac/amp (soundcard basically, not even necessary but i had it already and its convenient) and love the setup. ive gone through several other headphones but found this setup to be the most comfortable with best sound. the X2's barely feel like youre wearing anything, have great soundstage and just sound really good in general. i previously used beyerdynamic mmx300's which are an actual headset (mic attached) but moved away from them as they just were not quite as comfy as i wanted for longer usage. also the mic didnt detach so it got annoying at times. other headphones i tried are my akg 553 pros, ath m50x, oppo pm3 and fostex th x00 but none quite had the "full package" of great sound and comfort of the x2's though. not the cheapest setup, but it works great and im happy with it so worth it to me.

http://north-america.beyerdynamic.com/shop/usb-sound-card-for-headsets.html

in general the idea is to just get headphones from an actual headphone manufacturer, not a does it all like logitech. they make so many different things, headphones just arent a priority. others have mentioned the sennheiser game ones, which is at least a headset from an actual headphone company. the hyperx clouds are also supposed to be very good for the price despite not being from a headphone company, but that is probably because they are based off of the beyerdynamic mmx300, which is just the beyer dt990s with a mic. meaning the clouds are just a much more affordable clone basically.

at the minimum just try to avoid buzzwords like "7.1 surround". the headphones dont have 8 speakers in them (there are a few that tried doing such, but so few it doesnt matter), theyre not actually doing any surround sound so dont fall for it.

u/mannequinz · 2 pointsr/xboxone

For the Xbox I use HiFi Man HE400S with a ModMic and a splitter. All of that plugged into the stereo adapter for the controller. No need for the splitter on the PC obviously.

Also, here is a good place to start looking for new headphones/headsets.

u/Biblos_Geek · 2 pointsr/MonoHearing

Yes, my Semi-ProX model has a mic more generally for smartphone use but for work with a PC or gaming mic use you can add an inexpensive mic like this for maybe use at work (because it costs so little and no fear of it being stolen or damaged) and the Antlion Mod Mic for home use like in gaming.

u/Shields42 · 2 pointsr/gaming

There aren't really any high-quality wireless headphones on the market. There certainly aren't any wireless headphones that compete with wired headphones. For $298, you could get this setup:

Headphones: Audio-Technica AD900X

Microphone: Antlion Modmic

DAC/Amp: Micca OriGen+

Those components will destroy the 840 in every regard except mobility.

u/fleberto · 2 pointsr/pcmasterrace

If you want a straight up "gaming" headset, the HyperX Cloud is (in my opinion) the only option. However, you could get yourself some legitimate headphones like this and just slap one of these on there. I would recommend the latter option. You wouldn't need a DAC or amp for these headphones, as onboard audio is just fine.

u/Fil0l · 2 pointsr/pcmasterrace

I have a small workspace so i'm in kind of the same situation here, this is what i'm planning to do: https://www.amazon.com/Superlux-HD681EVO-B-HD-681-Black/dp/B00CAG1ZAQ/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1466239864&sr=8-1&keywords=superlux+hd681+evo + https://www.amazon.com/Antlion-Audio-ModMic-Attachable-Microphone/dp/B00R98JVVU/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1466239896&sr=8-2&keywords=modmic
I already got the headphones (they sound REALLY good, only flaw is that they are plastic, but I have had them for a while and if you treat them carefully it'll be fine) and I will get the ModMic soon, here (https://soundcloud.com/ltt-mic-test) is the LTT comparison between the recordings of the most popular microphones, external and headsets ones, and the ModMic, and I think it sounds WAY better than others. It may not be on the quality level of an external mic but hey, it's small, portable (they give you a little bag to carry it around) and it attaches on your headphones so it doesn't take away space from your desk. Hope i was helpful :)

u/claymc19 · 2 pointsr/buildapcsales

I use the Antlion modmic 4...works fine, its $50 on Amazon here. There's a v5 now that's modular here and a wireless one that I'm seriously considering, both quite a bit pricier

u/Anergos · 2 pointsr/buildapc

I'd get the Audio-Technica ATH AD700X ($100) + a mic like the antlion modmic ($55).

You can cheapen out on the mic and get something lesser (like the Zalman Zm-Mic1 ) if you don't care that much about it. Though fair warning, mics like the zalman really depend on the placement.

u/The_Roptor · 2 pointsr/Gaming_Headsets

Because the PS4 is your primary usage with the HD800S, I recommend trying the Creative Sound BlasterX G5. This is entry level as a DAC/AMP combo unit but should work very well in your use case. This device is designed for consoles and PC usage and can produce very good audio from your PS4 (and PC) over a USB connection and it has separate 3.5 mm connections for the headphones and a mic (HD800S does not have a mic, but if you play online games with friends you will want to get something like the Antlion Audio ModMic to turn the headphones into a headset when you want to. If you get the G5, do not use the virtual surround sound SB-Axx1 and Scout Mode options, they are likely not as good as the standard audio output. An alternative to the Creative G5 would be a Schiit Audio Modi 2 DAC (connect to PS4 over optical instead of USB) paired with a Schiit Audio Magni 3 AMP. This "Schiit stack" as it is often called is less gamer focussed (no mic input, etc) but would still be fantastic for gaming and listening to music and is highly recommended in the audio community. You would need both the Magni 3 AMP and the Modi 2 DAC linked together to get sound - whereas you could alternatively use the all in on Creative G5. These options are audiophile entry level, but should impress you since you are so happy with the headphones on the PS4 controller already. I would try and recommend something more expensive, but honestly don't think you need that and I would have difficulty recommending more expensive devices since I dont have proper experience with that level of DACs and AMPs. TLDR; Get the Creative Sound BlasterX G5 if you want to use a mic on your PS4 with the headphones, and get the Antlion Audio ModMic to turn the headphones into a headset when you want to talk in games with friends and online gamers. If you dont need to use a mic on your PS4 and price is no matter to you (G5 is cheaper), then get the Schiit Audio Modi 2 DAC and the Schiit Audio Magni 3 AMP. Also, regardless of which DAC and AMP you get, get some nice cables off Amazon for USB or optical for your setup to connect from the PS4 to your couch/coffee table where you probably game.

It depends on what you like and how much you want to spend.

I would suggest an Antlion Mod Mic with a separate pair of headphones as my main recommendation as you can just take the mic off like a normal headset and get the best of both worlds of a pair of headphones you like and a headset style.

My second recommendation would be pair of hyper x clouds II if you really don't want a pair of headphones.

It's attached to the headphone by a base piece that's stuck on using an adhesive and the rest of the mic connects to the base magnetically. It has multiple positions so you don't have to keep it in front of your face when you aren't using it.

I actually work/study in audio engineering, so speakers are my bread and butter. Personally though, a good pair of headphones while using my computer suffice for me, if he's talking to his friends online, consider maybe getting him a gaming headset? Only really saying this, as speakers are usually really low quality until you get into the upper £100 price range, and can take up a lot of desk space.

Usually I would recommend buying a standard pair of headphones, and buying an attachable microphone separate but it's only really worth doing if you're really into your sound.

Here's a 'gaming headset' reccomendation

Here's a desktop speaker reccomendation

Wi-Fi adapters you usually need to buy if you're building your own PC, but usually come in all Pre-built computers, so I wouldn't worry about that, however it is recommended even these days to use a wired connection if you can.

Maybe a mouse mat? Can pick any up from brands like 'Steelseries' for cheap-ish and last absolute years, he will need a Keyboard, but unless you want to splash out on a mechanical keyboard, the standard Microsoft keyboards are great.

I think that's everything? haha.

I've got a modmic 4, it works pretty great. i have an omnidirectional but they also offer a unidirectional(which is what you mentioned) mic. Only downside is it's price($~50), but i've found it's quality is great and they offer additional sticky pads and i believe it comes with an extra one also, if you ever need to transfer it to a new headset. I remember the first few iterations of the modmic got terrible reviews but the 4 and higher have gotten considerably better(haven't checked the 6, i'm going off of the 4 tbh)

u/MasterTre · 1 pointr/Windows10

Yeah, sounds like there's simply too much cable there. Rule of thumb with electrical shit is that every time you move between two different cables you lose some power. So all those adapters are sucking power out of the setup and your computer is simply not outputting enough power to the microphone channel to get a signal to make the round trip. Microphone signals don't require as much power as speakers because they're mostly passive; speakers have to do the work of making noise, microphones have the work done to them.

What hardware limitations are you dealing with that you couldn't solve with a $20 headset? You've already spent 6x what you need to because you're buying Beats, they're mediocre headphones for audiophile money, and they don't even do what you need them to do...

[This](HyperX Cloud Stinger - Gaming Headset - Comfortable HyperX Signature Memory Foam, Swivel to Mute Noise-Cancellation Microphone, Compatible with PC, Xbox One, PS4, Nintendo Switch, and Mobile Devices https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01L2ZRYVE/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_VG11Db7426ZQD) is what I just bought because my old headset broke. It's great.

You could also attach [this](Antlion Audio ModMic Attachable Boom Microphone - Noise Cancelling with Mute Switch https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00R98JVVU/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_MI11Db49A1NPS) to your beats to give them a detachable mic.

Something like [this](USB Sound Card,TechRise USB External Stereo Sound Adapter Splitter Converter with Volume Control for Windows and Mac,Plug & Play No Drivers Needed https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01J7P0OGI/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_BK11DbDK7NF1H) might help supply more power to your existing mic as well.

Whatever you do, you need to reduce the number of cables you're using.

u/MMWDMP · 1 pointr/buildmeapc

I highly recommend getting headphones and a ModMic/desktop mic over a headset, they're generally much higher quality. Any of these three are great options: 1, 2, 3+mic. The HyperX isn't bad but any of these make a far superior audio setup for a lower price.

u/redsolocup · 1 pointr/pcmasterrace

A boom mic in this context is a mic that attaches to headphone and swings out over the mouth of the person wearing them.

These are usually the two most recommended headphone boom mics:

  • V-MODA BoomPro

  • Antlion ModMic

I have these with the V-MODA Boom pros and it is the same exact experience as with most gaming headsets. But sounds much better and the Mic is good quality. If either the mic or headphones break I can replace only the broken part. Also, I can just use a normal 3.5mm audio cord for when I don't want a microphone attached.

u/NoahLK17 · 1 pointr/headphones

Well alright then. I'm going with a modmic setup because it's less of an issue and higher quality, alot of bad reviews for the ket direct. https://www.amazon.com/Splitter-Separate-Headphone-Connector-Convertors/dp/B071GCV97P this and a mod mic https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00R98JVVU/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_6H6pAbPTWKFYD?th=1&psc=1 is what I would do. I hate the second wire, but at the same time it's alot of quality.

u/Masstaff · 1 pointr/headphones

Are you buying the one with the mix amp? If so any modern xbox one controller can just plug in the mic cord for chat and use the mix amp aux out to plug into your dac, which you can run into your xbox's optical port. Or I would just buy these guys with this mic. You can then use this DAC. That dac has all the cables you would need to get up and running. But I would seriously consider that second setup to the Astros.

u/Natemiester · 1 pointr/GiftofGames

Gaming headsets are overpriced. Buy a good set of headphones and either a clip-on mic, something like this, or an antlion modmic.

I, personally, use the Audio Technica M20x's with a removable cable mod, and this mic. Works like a charm.

You seem to have a pretty solid budget, so I would recommend buying the best headphones you can and pairing them with the modmic.

u/Artifice_Purple · 1 pointr/pcmasterrace

This. Down the line you can add a [Modmic] (http://www.amazon.com/Antlion-Audio-ModMic-Attachable-Microphone/dp/B00R98JVVU/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1450924737&sr=8-2&keywords=modmic) to it - better than any gaming headset you could ever buy.

Well, the HyperX sounds damn good for a gaming headset in the mic department but nonetheless you cannot go wrong with a Modmic.

u/notmuchgoingontoday · 1 pointr/audiophile

hi, i'm looking to potentially buy a new headset / mic combination, mostly for gaming and just listening to music. my mates are complaining about crackling sound / voice quality all the time when we're on teamspeak / discord. i've read through this thread but still need some guidance

i currently have a xonar d1 soundcard and an old steelseries gaming headset. yea yea i know, gaming headsets suck. but that's why i'm here looking for an alternative.

do I just need a decent headset (was thinking of an Audio Technica ATH-M50x) + mic (maybe AntLion Audio ModMic V4 or is there a cheaper alternative?) or do i also need a DAC & Amp?

any input is appreciated. thanks.

u/wilb0b · 1 pointr/Twitch

The Audio-Technica BPHS1 is what Seananners and Hutch use but you'll need an audio interface to turn the analogue XLR cable to a digital USB to your computer, like a Scarlett solo.

The Antlion Mod Mic isn't too bad from what I've been hearing and you can attach it to most headphones as long as there is a smooth flat non-textured surface for it to mount to.

And there's one other I was eyeing a long time ago from Audio-Technica with the supposedly best mic on the market for headsets but I never heard if it ever got brought to the U.S. I think Summit uses that one but I can't recall the name of it.

Headset capsules are much smaller so it cannot capture as wide a range of frequencies as your Blue Yetti. So you will lose some quality in your voice but depending on how you personally sound it may either be only a slight difference, or you might sound like you're trying to talk with your hand over your mouth.

u/rgrass · 1 pointr/pcmasterrace

OK, so all you need is a microphone.

TheEternalNightmare's suggestion of the Zalman Zm-Mic1 will get the job done but this is a case of "You get what you pay for" at less than $10 it's not much. But it is a mic; you talk, they hear you (mostly).

If you're willing to spend more (around $50) the Blue Snowball iCE is a pretty good choice. Connects with USB.

If you need something like a standard headset boom mic the Antlion ModMic is probably your best bet. It sorta just sticks to the side of the headphone cups and connects to the
3.5mm microphone port. It's around $55

It just depends on what you want and what you're willing to pay for.

u/Cryogenes · 1 pointr/osugame

I was also feeling the same, so I went ahead and bought some Sennheiser HD 558s and just attached a ModMic onto the side for whenever I talk to people. I heard they're good open-back headphones with a great soundstage and got them for around $90. If your room is loud though, you'll hear more background noise while wearing them compared to closed-back.

Also worth noting that there's less bass with these when compared to most other gaming headsets, so it'll be more neutral sounding, so if you're really in love with bass there should be better options to suit that taste.

u/AnimusNoctis · 1 pointr/pcmasterrace

A headset will never sound nearly as good as a good pair of headphones and an attachable mic for the same or less money. Get a Zalman Zm-Mic1 or a Antlion Audio ModMic and attach it to a decent pair of headphones from Sennheiser, Audio Technica, etc. The HD 598 Cs fits your price range if you go with the Zalman.

Edit: If the mic is your only concern, just take it off and buy the Zalman or the ModMic and attach it to your Revolver S.

u/brianf408 · 1 pointr/pcmasterrace

Headphones you really can't go wrong with these Sennheisers

or these Audio Technicas

I'd pair those with a microphone, I recommend:

Mod mic

Zalman

Samson Go Mic

u/spockblok · 1 pointr/pcmasterrace

A good pair of headphones and the modmic will give you a better experience than an average gaming headset, headphones come down to personal preference (senhiser and audio-technica are my preferred brands). As for a keyboard, you should probably feel the switches yourself before buying anything.

u/LifelongCaboose · 1 pointr/Gaming_Headsets

Well I'll start off by saying YES open back will help you not need mic monitoring it will also add a better soundstage for audio positioning that will work better than any terrible 7.1 virtual SS or "True" 7.1(which is terrible and no one should buy any of the current headsets marketed with this gimmick). Also gaming focused isn't really ever nessasary because better sound in general will be good for gaming and will add more functionality. Also with wireless you sacrifice a fair bit a quality and you have to pay way more. If your willing to spend $300 don't even get any headset. But a pair of HD598 from Sennheiser and a Mod Mic 4.0 this set up will cost close to the same as a G933 and will be better than it in every single way by a large margin. Also for it to work on PS4 you will just need one adapter which Sennheiser sells. But if you for what ever reason want a headset still go for the Sennheiser Game One there way better than the current best wireless gaming headset the Siberia 800 and come in at about half the price. But the aforementioned adapter is still nessasary on console.

u/sniper_fox · 1 pointr/pcgaming

My advice is to buy some inexpensive audiophile headphones ($100) or mid-range audiophile headphones ($150) and a decent clip on mic ($55) (a less expensive alternative ($30)).

For around the same price as a overpriced gaming headsets ($200), you'll get all the comfort, durability, and audio quality of nice headphones, plus you can chat with buddies while gaming! Plus, you can actually use them for music and stuff besides gaming.

u/NarwhalShibboleth · 1 pointr/buildapc

Sennheiser HD558 headphones pretty high quality. If you need a microphone, you can add on a modmic for 55$

u/shanx057 · 1 pointr/HeadphoneAdvice

I would split your budget to get two headphones for dedicated use.

  1. a. Gaming Headphone => Since you mainly listed FPS titles that require you to pin point footsteps and shots, I would recommend the Audio Technica ATH AD 700x (AD700x Amazon Link) for $92. These headphones are well respected and loved for FPS titles with the same requirements as yours. They don't need an amp and can be driven from your motherboard with ease.
    b. Gaming microphone => Get the ModMic 4.0 (ModMic 4.0 Amazon Link) for $50. These are great and can be driven using your motherboard. However I would suggest pairing them with something like this (USB Sound Card Amazon Link) for best results - add another $15 for this.

  2. Music and movies headphone => Get something like the HD 599 (HD 599 Amazon Link) from Sennheiser if you want good balanced sound without breaking the bank. They are easy to drive using your mobo and if you get an amp down the line they will increase the volume of these headphones. These cans are like $149 now.

So you will be spending $157 for the gaming headphone and mic and $148 for the music/movies headphone. I know this has a huge drawback of switching headphones when you want to do either, but you can also use the HD 599 for gaming as it has good imaging. The sound stage is not as wide as the AD700x but it is still good enough for positioning shots. However this will give you the (relatively) best of both worlds for your budget. :)
u/Me-as-I · 1 pointr/headphones

Nearly all amps don't have a way to also accept a mic input. The ones that do are pricey.

You can use a mic like this to have a mic that attaches to your headphones that goes through a different cable to the PC mic input. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00R98JVVU/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_awdb_t1_z-90Bb7PG0HZH

The 598s also don't really need an amp, unless your PC just has really bad audio.

u/b1gfreakn · 1 pointr/pcmasterrace

I'm aware of these things, hence my previous comment. But the cost of the mod mic alone is more a fairly decent gaming headset. The Logitech G430 is quite nice. I used to own it before I upgraded to the Audiotechnica ATHM50x and a Blue Yeti.

u/ssotoen · 1 pointr/audioengineering

I'm looking for a microphone for gaming and teamspeak. Max budget is 100€ (living in Germany). I wanted to try the ModMic V4 but I've read a lot of bad reviews saying the audio quality is not worth the money. Does anyone know if that's true or have a different suggestion?

u/Kyzriel · 1 pointr/pcmasterrace

I'd highly recommend buying a nice pair of headphones and either a ModMic or a cheap lapel mic. Despite the price, the lapel microphones aren't actually that bad.

If you absolutely must go with the headset instead though, then I'd say go with the HyperX headset you listed. Avoid the Logitech one, as Logitech has a poor reputation with headsets due to design flaws that introduce weakspots that can and will break. No idea how ASUS headsets are.

But the thing is, as high of audio quality cannot be achieved with wireless headphones.

I would recommend Audio Technica ATH-50X Headphones and a Mod Mic. Together it will run about $210. However You can always get those headphones in combo deals with a case/headphone amp. I have this combo. It is the headphones with a Fiio EK11(A3) headphone amp that has on board bass boost.

Yes there will be wires, but that setup would sound better than any gaming headset could dream of.

I guess it depends on what you're looking for, but I recently purchased a Blue Yeti and it is amazing. I bought the black out streamer edition on sale and made some money back from selling the game. That said, I think it's 100% worth the current price. If you are looking for something that can be mounted on your headset, I've also been recommended the ModMic. I have no personal experience but it is super popular.

u/LInOAH · 1 pointr/buildapc

I don't know what price range you'd like to spend. But for me, I got the cheapest option, and it came with 3, making it even cheaper (well, sunk cost, so might as well consider them cheaper). And they turned out to have some nice sound quality.

Personally, the decision was based fully on price, the ModMic and Sony might have a better sound quality than the Neewer and Zalman, but that doesn't mean the Neewer and Zalman has poor sound quality, they're actually really nice sound as compared to most gaming headsets. Since the sound quality of the cheap ones are in my liking I went with the cheapest I found (you can search the models up on YouTube or something and find audio recordings from them).

Here's a long summary breakdown:

  1. If you want the cheapest mic on the block, get the Neewer Mini Lapel Mic, I would recommend these as they sound nice and is really cheap, came with 3 as well, although I'm not sure why you'd need 3.
  2. If you want to try the popular pick, that'd be the Zalman Zm-Mic1. I believe this is what most people uses, but I haven't personally tried them out, so I don't know about the build and sound quality of it. But it's what most people would recommend, so there has to be a certain credibility to them.
  3. If you want a better build quality one, really small and slick, go with Sony. Sony products will be a bit pricier but they are good products for sure.
  4. If you want to go full on premium mode, you can check out the Antlion ModMic. They're hella expensive though....

Finally, a post in my area!

First off, I always encourage people who have tried exclusively closed-back headphones to give open-backed headphones a shot. I was a fan of the closed-back for a lot of time (gone through 2 pairs of ATH-M50x's, a pair of PSB M4U 1's, etc), mostly because I listened to electronic music and wanted heavy bass. That changed, however, when I started getting into the audiophile scene and realized how much closed-back cans distort lower frequencies. The biggest issue I have with closed-back, however, is the lack of air flow. Your ears can get quite hot and sweaty in long sessions!

As far as a gaming headset, I always recommend that people buy a pair of headphones they REALLY like, and get an Antlion Modmic. The quality of audio output on it is just beastly, and you'll find that any kind of 'gaming headset' will be sacrificing either input or output audio in a major way for the price. Essentially, gaming headphones are a rip off.

Part 1 Part 2 Part 3 of this Tek Syndicate series are great guides for building a headset, specifically with the modmic, at various price ranges and getting the best bang for your buck.

JayzTwoCents did a similar video and also advocates for this approach! Check it out, you won't be disappointed.

Mine is attached on a pair of AKG K7XX, occasionally put it on my DT 990's and I could not be happier with quality! Good luck my friend :)

Edit: a couple words

u/kare_kano · 1 pointr/headphones

I'd go for some good musical and bassy headphones combined with an add-on mic, this way you get the best of both worlds. Gaming headsets aren't really designed for music.

My first choice would be to combine the V-Moda M-100 with a BoomPro... but they come at £20 over budget (at least on Amazon, perhaps look around for deals, or ask stores if they're willing to sell the combo for £200).

Second choice is to slap a ModMic on a Beyerdynamic DT770 Pro 32 Ohm or DT990 Pro 32 Ohm (can't find these on Amazon, look them up in other places). Don't get Premium models or DT880, those are open back. Don't get models over 32 Ohm if you say you're goingo to plug them into the PC and you don't have a dedicated amplifier. This combo comes in under budget.

Looking for a DAC/AMP with mic input, I have [Philips X2] ( https://www.amazon.co.uk/Philips-X2-00-Fidelio-Headphone/dp/B00MRUPSHQ ) headphones with ModMic but the modmic is super quite, have to boost mic gain so people can hear me which in turn make the mic sound pretty bad. Seems to be a problem with my Motherboards audio, a lot of other people with Realtek audio have the same problem.

What I have been looking at:

At the moment leaning towards Creative BlasterX G5 or Creative Sound Blaster Omni haven't really seen any options outside of Sound Blaster for DACs with mic input.

Or maybe a simple cheap mic to usb sound adapter is all I need?

I have read the Philips X2 don't benefit too much for a DAC or Amp. Anyone who has run into similar problems with their ModMic could you let me know how you solved it, thanks.

I agree with what NovaKitFox said with audio being important, but if your budget is 100 and if you had to choose between one or the other, I'd always choose a decent mic so your viewers can hear you better.

Instead of going with the fancy wireless modmic that was previously posted, there's a cheaper wired version by the same company that I used before but still have and would recommend:

Antlion ModMic - 49.95 US

Literally find any okay headphone and stick this mic on it and you're set. Generally you don't want to use the "gamer" headset mics for recording, they come out sounding cheap. With this, you can always upgrade to better headphone down the line since it's detachable and everything. If you pick up a more studio microphone like the audio-technica AT2005USB, its nice but then you'd have to think about a mic arm and audio interface which can easily add up to another 100+ dollars.

When you DO get more money to upgrade your headphone, I would suggest looking at something like the beyerdynamic DT 990 PRO (142 US) which is what I'm using and its been my favorite thus far.

As a general rule of thumb, stay away from anything marketed "gamer" headphones or headsets. They're usually overpriced and made cheap in my opinion. Not to say they're ALL bad but I find it annoying to have to sift through it all. Just do some of your own due diligent and see what works for you.

Hope this all helps. Cheers and good luck!

u/CurvedLightsaber · 1 pointr/techsupport

Sounds like you just need to turn down the gain. Right click speaker icon > recording devices > right click the mic > properties > levels > try it at 50 or lower. If the volume is too low now you can increase the boost, but don't increase the microphone level or it will pick up too much background noise.

If this don't help you just need a better mic. "Gaming" headsets are generally shit, I recommend a pair of sennheiser's and a separate mic (like a snowball) or a modmic like this if you really want decent quality.

My wife and I just did this our self a few months ago. We spend hours gaming each day and found a great combo using Sennheiser HD 598, Antlion Modmic, and a simple USB audio adapter.

  • The headset has great comfort for long gaming sessions, it also has an open ear design so we can easily communicate with each other (Not perfect for everyone if you have a lot of background noise).
  • The mic was a simple solution for us because we like having it attached to our headset and didn't want to have a mic setup on the desk.

We spent a while doing our research across multiple subs and obviously everyone's situation is different.
u/titaniadioxide · 1 pointr/Twitch

I’m doing the same thing! So yeah, here’s what I’ve found and what I’ve done.

  • Plugging into the switch eliminates game sound on stream.

  • Plugging into the computer delays the audio, which is annoying.

  • Plugging into the capture card (I have a different capture card, not the Elgato, and mine has a game audio input (for game chat capture) and a mic/headphone 4-ring input/output (for mic capture to both the capture card and back to the game). I don’t have any games that need voice chat, and using this option de-syncs my facecam from my audio.

  • Plugging my headphones into the capture card but my mic into the computer. This could work with the right setup. Mine isn’t working because a 3-ring headphone plug into the capture card causes a terrible clicking noise, and my headphones don’t have a built in volume control so I need a volume control adapter (which converts a 4-ring cable to 3-ring, unfortunately). This setup also needs a separate mic from headphones, so you aren’t causing static with double grounding.

  • Headphones into TV/monitor, mic into laptop. This is what I do. Again, it requires headphones and mic that aren’t connected, but it works for me really well. I don’t notice any lag in audio, my face cam and audio are synced up, and the computer still gets game audio.

If you’re using a pair of gaming headphones with a built in mic, I’d recommend switching to some decent cans without a mic instead, and getting a separate mini boom mic or a full mic. The mini boom mic I linked is the one I have. I have these headphones which has lasted me about a year so far (though that does include some superglue). Any small inline volume control will work.

    Good luck!

tl;dr: It's not worth it, get a good headphone, please, so you may finally ascend your ears, and look down upon all the peasants below.

For any of your needs, the 840 won't come close to what other $350 headphones will buy you. Let me suggest some stuff, taking in account the fact that you want bass and soundstage.

I want bass: Philips Fidelio X2, $250

I primarily want soundstage, but also a little bass: Sennheiser HD 650, $250-$500 (usually retails around $300)

Keep in mind those are open headphones, they will leak a lot of sound, but that's good, that gives you a great soundstage and strikingly good sound. FYI you might also want an amplifier with these, especially the HD 650.

I want something between the former: One of the Beyerdynamics, I'm not sure which to recommend, $120-$250~

You also need a mic, the Antlion Modmic is the best in this department

Simulated Q&A:
> But I want Bluetooth

Sorry, can't help there. There is probably some good Bluetooth headphone, however.
> But I need surround sound.

Most surround sound in headsets are simulated, including the one in the 840. This means you're never getting "true" surround sound, only virtual surround, which any headphone can produce with the right software, and there's no shortage of Virtual Surround software.

Do not waste your money. Do feel free to voice any concerns.

get a nice pair of studio head phones for less and buy a mod mic.

These are my headphones for example ( I did go a little more on the pricey side though but you can find something just as good or better than "gaming headsets" for less):
https://www.amazon.com/Audio-Technica-ATH-AD700X-Audiophile-Headphones/dp/B009S332TQ/ref=sr_1_14?ie=UTF8&qid=1484217515&sr=8-14&keywords=audio+technica

And this is the mod mic:
https://www.amazon.com/Antlion-Audio-ModMic-Attachable-Microphone/dp/B00R98JVVU/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1484217546&sr=8-1&keywords=modmic

You get more bang for your buck if you do the research. You can find better sounding headphones for less and the mod mic sounds amazing and clear.

A microphone to go with a pair of open headphones. Sorry if this isn't allowed as it wasn't on the template or guide but this is probably the most knowledgeable headphone/set group I know of.

Using an SMSL M3 DAC so no solutions such as the BoomPro as that caused a ground loop.

  • Budget - Up to $70 but the less the better.
  • Source - Probably a cheap USB sound card or my cheap mobo. Whichever sounds better.
  • Requirements for Isolation - This will be paired with Philips SHP9500S open headphones. My primary concern is having loud music or game noise not trigger voice activation.
  • Past mics - V-MODA BoomPro. Great mic and build quality. Causes a ground loop when you don't plug the mic and headphones into the same source.

I'm currently looking at the Sony ECMCS3 Clip mic due to quality and price. Being stereo I'm concerned it's designed to pick up too much. Anyone have any experience with open cans and this mic?

Also looking at ModMic 4. That's the one with the uni-directional mic only. But my SHP9500S have only very small pieces of solid plastic. I'd probably be looking at sticking it onto the grill which seems flimsy? Anyone have experience with this? I'd want to be pretty sure that the isolation would be good enough as it's a $55 purchase vs. $16 for the Sony if I'm just taking potshots. Thanks.

You've already got standard headphones you like? The easy, cheap option is to get the Zalman Zm-Mic1. It clips to your headphone cable and plugs into your PC's headphone input.

If you really want to keep those headphones and you are also willing to spend more money on better voice quality, get the Antlion ModMic.

There are a ton of great reviews for both of these products on Youtube. The general consensus seems to be that gaming headsets don't give you good sound quality for their price, and you're better off buying your mic and headphones separately.

This is quite a long post but you probably should read it all. I also searched for the best possible sound on the PS4 for the cheapest price and tried almost everything.

Astro Headsets are NOT top notch. They are just OK. They have extremely elevated bass that drowns out the footsteps and clarity.

Razer again are completely overpriced and sound worse than 30 dollar headsets.

Sony Gold Wireless is decent and wireless which is also nice. But they sound a little bit muddy compared to the HyperX Cloud II. But sound better than the Astro's.

I have every headset listed except the Razer Kraken 7.1 but I do have the Razer Megalodon which was absolutely horrible and I had so many issues with it and the firmware updates fixed nothing and the sound from the headphones transmitted over the mic even when isolated so it was a wiring issue. I just would shy away from Razer at this point. I hear too many bad things about them all the time with build quality issues. Although I do think they look really cool.

For PS4 in my experience all USB sound cards sound terrible. I have tried the Syba, the Sony Silver USB Adapter, and the Logitech G430 USB sound card.

If you don't want to think about anything, buy these.

https://www.amazon.com/Sennheiser-GSP-Gaming-Headset-507079/dp/B01KV3BB0S/

This right here will probably be the best setup available for the cheapest price. The HyperX Cloud II could be substituted for the GSP 300 but HyperX Cloud II's do sound slightly less clear than Sennheiser. These GSP 300's look like a refresh of the PC 350 SE but with reduced ohms but I currently do not have the GSP 300 so can't tell you if it sounds different than the PC 350 SE but if it sounds like it, it will be great for gaming in every way.

Here are further explanations for why you should get those two.

The new MixAmp Pro TR has horrible metallic surround sound.

Example here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LtNF1i2eSwg

It really does sound horrible so I returned it and got the MixAmp Pro 2013 edition from eBay and can tell you that it sounds absolutely fantastic. And much better than any of the USB stuff. Because of the Digital Optical connection. It is very important that if you go this route that you set up the MixAmp Pro 2013 correctly. You have to make sure that in the PS4 settings that the output to headphones setting is set to CHAT ONLY or you will not get the surround sound features through optical. You will get the standard stereo USB sound card of the MixAmp Pro 2013 instead of the optical which sounds much better than the other options.

The MixAmp also really is an amp. It pushes my PC 350 SE 150 ohms perfectly. The other USB adapters do NOT amp and I can not get my PC 350 SE's loud enough through controller or any USB adapter. So the MixAmp pro does definitely amp. But I should mention any headset above 150 ohms or lower sensitivity would probably not work with the MixAmp that well or it would be really low volume.

Also Sennheiser is extremely well respected for their sound and I own the PC 350 SE (And the G4ME One) and can tell you that it has the best sound of any gaming headset out there except maybe the ATH-ADG1X but those are 300 dollars.

Also, I can confirm that the USB adapter that comes with the HyperX Cloud II does not support surround sound on PS4. No USB devices support surround sound on PS4 unless you buy it straight from Sony. The Sony Golds and Sony Silver USB adapter are the only two devices that support USB surround sound that I know of. And it is not that great compared to what the MixAmp Pro 2013 offers.

Now for the part where I will tell you that if you want the audiophile solution, read further.

Most gaming headsets really do suck compared to a pair of audiophile headphones and an add on mic.

So in this area I will recommend this solution.

For audiophile experience you are going to want to get these SHP 9500's:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16826138190
And this add on mic (Uni Directional with Mute):
https://www.amazon.com/Antlion-Audio-ModMic-Attachable-Microphone/dp/B00R98JVVU?th=1

I don't recommend that V-Moda BoomPro even though it works perfectly with the SHP 9500's. It picks up everything in the room and since PS4 does not offer a push to talk feature I would stay away from it. It would be perfect for PC gaming though with a Push-to-Talk button.

If you get this with the MixAmp you are going to have the absolute best sound quality with the best mic quality for that price. No doubts whatsoever.

If money is really not an issue. I recommend the Sennheiser HD 598's with the ModMic and the SoundBlaster X7 with the Bluetooth USB adapter for chat. It does not work with Xbox One for chat only optical.

And if money is not an issue AT ALL then I recommend the Sennheiser HD 600 with the ModMic and the SoundBlaster X7 and the MixAmp Pro 2013 so you can put that into the X7 and use the line in and it's audio mixing capabilities so you can switch between SBX and Dolby Headphone with the MixAmp and choose the one you like the best.

I hope this helps you make a decision. I own most of the stuff mentioned and this is all from personal experience. But you should also note that sound is highly subjective so you may just have to purchase this stuff from Amazon so you can test all of it and send it back if it doesn't meet your needs or expectations.

Blue Yeti is garbage, get a ModMic and Sennheiser HD 598s.

You should be able schedule the initial interview as soon as 12-24 hours after signing up. I think from my sign up date to hire date I completed the entire process in 4-5 days! Which was awesome because I desperately needed work at the time! You choose when to do the interview based on the available time slots. However, there are trying something new where you can do a completely self-recorded initial interview, which has some advantages I'm sure. You will have more control over exactly what you are sending them and hopefully show something professional enough to get above $18/hour and closer to $20 or $22!

I would not invest a lot into props unless you are hired by VIPKID. In every stage of this hiring process, you will have access to the power point of what class you will be pretending to teach, so you can find those props ahead of time around your house, or make a few simple drawings. So while in practice you will need a variety of versatile props, the interview is all about getting a very specific case correct. All I purchased was a large white poster board to hang behind me, some post-it note letters to create an alphabet on the sheet, and use markers to draw some colorful shapes/animals/people/etc. on it as well. I would recommend, however, buying a small handheld dry erase board! They are so versatile and it is a small investment cost to apply for this job and look way more professional. I also purchased a nice attachable microphone which I will link below. Don't get too obsessed with finding tons of awesome props, though. Many applicants often focus too much on props and not enough on their communication skills!

If you are hired, I also have a whole list of what props and setups to get then. I'm all about keeping it simple and not having my supplies take up a whole room in my house! :D

This microphone is awesome if you want to turn your good headphones into an amazing headSET!

I'd get a decent mic and headphones, I use this Zalman mic which does the job just fine, but is a little fiddly. You could also spend a little more on a ModMic which I've heard good things about.

For headphones, I'd recommend the Audio-Technica ATH-M50X - they're good, and should be even better with your sound card.

Apologies for the UK links.
