> RAM shouldn't be too much of a hassle, right? … Also, I couldn't really find the RAM slot limitations of the motherboard, can I just plug in 2 16GB RAM DDR3 sticks?

See http://www.asrock.com/mb/AMD/970%20Extreme3/?cat=Specifications. That boards supports up to 64GB, and it supports 16GB ram sticks. There might be compatibility issues with big ram sticks sometimes and you should run a current bios version, but I'd just get one 16GB ramstick and add it to what you have currently.

> One of those ultra-wide monitors: (Probably this one: AOC Professional U3477PQU). So I need a DisplayPort on my new graphics card, I guess?

No, not with that display. According to https://www.amazon.com/AOC-Professional-U3477PQU-34-Inch-LED-Lit/dp/B00RYZU2ZW, that display support only VGA, DVI-D and HDMI. Note though that the 6950 does not support resolutions that high via none of its outputs. For that display, you would nee a new gpu, or a processor with integrated graphics, that supports a resolution that high. Or maybe there is a version of that processor with display port, and you can get a fitting gpu for that. Yes, the amazon page I cited is wrong. http://aoc-europe.com/en/products/u3477pqu#product-detail-technical shows what it really supports. Display port is probably the best way to get the resolution, and you would need a new gpu for a resolution that high (or a skylake processor and use its integrated graphics).

The budget is only for gpu and possible cpu upgrade, display is separate?

Don't know what your budget is but I came across this monitor when doing research for my own purchase:

AOC U3477PQU

It's had positive reviews from various sites. I'd order one myself if I had the space for a monitor that big.

The Asus PG348Q at $1500 new, or the Acer X34 at $1250 new are the only other monitors I know that fit the criteria.

  • IPS
  • 3440x1440
  • 34"
  • G-Sync
  • 100hz
  • Curved

The Acer XR341CK does not have G-Sync. It has Free Sync, meaning only AMD cards can use the sync feature. It has been seen for $599 refurbished however.

This LG 34UM88C-P at $800 new, does 75hz but without G-Sync or a curve.

The LG UC87C at $800, is the cheapest 60hz with a curve and without G-Sync

The absolute cheapest monitor with minimum specs is the AOC 3447PQU at $600, however quality control seems very iffy.

If you're a casual gamer I would reccomend a new LGUC87C. It's cheap at $750, has a gorgeous curve, gives up G-sync and high refresh rates, but costs almost half of what the Acer and Asus monitors that do have those features. If you enjoy games with lots of action then I would reccomend the LG 34UM88C. The 75hz will make a big difference in that use case.

Yeah, I built my own computer, but it was more so I could play Fallout 4 with mods and not have to worry about potential No Man's Sky texture streaming issues. Here are the specs:

  • Intel Core i5 6600
  • Asus Z170-Deluxe ATX Motherboard This motherboard is probably the issue. It's brand spanking new and every single USB port is USB 3.1 Type A or Type C.
  • 16 GB Corsair Vengeance DDR4-3000 RAM
  • Kingston Predator 240 GB M.2 SSD
  • 2x 980 GTX
  • Corsair 750D ATX Full Tower Case In the end, this was the only part of my computer that had USB 2.0 ports, so I'm actually plugged into the front of my tower.
  • AOC U3477PQU Black 34" Ultrawide WQHD 3440x1440 That's the link to the newegg page because it's prettier there, but it's cheaper to buy it on amazon right now.
  • EVGA 220-G2-0750-XR 80 PLUS GOLD 750W ECO Mode Fully Modular NVIDIA SLI Ready and Crossfire Support Continuous Power Supply

There's a DVD burner in there, a few extra hard drives too, and I have an additional 24" screen from before, but that's the nuts and bolts.

540 British pounds. I don't know if amazon uk ships to the rest of Europe, and for some reason this monitor is much more expensive elsewhere.

While I haven't heard anything bad about that particular seller per se, I wouldn't risk it when you can get the same resolution of monitor from Amazon for $25 more, considering Amazon accepts returns (and pays for return shipping!) for virtually any reason.

The cheapest 1440p ultrawide at the moment is this which regularly dips below $500. You won't find anything brand new for less.

Would not buy an ultrawide used or refurbished: the warranty coverage is almost nonexistent. Even refurbished screens typically come with only a ~90 warranty from the manufacturer.

u/DR-Gustav · 1 pointr/ultrawidemasterrace

In regards of the pop issue is related to the included cable, see Amazon reviews, most if not all got resolved after replacing the DP cable. I'd try that first, if not get RMA for exchange.

As some reference, I bought this same monitor for $500 shipped, mounted it on my monitor arm, used the cables I already had plugged in the old one, not 1 problem. BF1 runs full screen on Ultra @ 60FPS no flicker, no pops.

The ones I've looked at are only 60hz because anything higher is nearly double the price (but the monitor will be curved!). As it stands, my choice would be the AOC U3477PQU, but it'll be years before I get the money together to build my rig. So who knows, maybe ultrawide 1440p monitors will have become reasonably priced by then. I want to appreciate Asus tech (since their ultrawide monitor looks extremely cool and is low latency), but having had problems with both of my Asus laptops has left me apprehensive.

Now, I'll ask my original question since it looks as though you may have confused it with a more general question: Originally I was planning to run an i7 7700K with my ultrawide monitor, but seeing as how AMD has become way more popular here recently, I'd like to know if the r7 1700X would give better performance on an ultrawide 1440p over the 7700K (I do not plan to overclock). I understand that future games might better utilize multi-core functionality, but it isn't too much of a concern right now for me. I also understand that I would get better longevity out of a motherboard built for the r7 because a cpu upgrade wouldn't require a new motherboard, whereas the intel would (IIRC?). Additionally, it's probably worth mentioning that I would be using 2400Mhz ram, since I've heard it said that AMD gets more powerful with 2400Mhz and above. I just created an account and saved my build so I could get some feedback from the community: I call it, What's a Theme? since it's mostly black with an RGB case and keyboard.

Thanks for your answer.
Where i live there is barely a difference in the price of the unlocked and locked i5 . So I decided to just go for a setup that lets me overclock if needed at a later point in the future but I am not planning on going SLI.
Even if I stay with a flat monitor there are quite some price gaps.
For example the one I listed is 570€ and this one

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00RYZU2ZW

is 720€ where I live and there is no way of telling a difference, so maybe someone here can recommend other good, flat 3440x1440 monitors.
What do you think about the setup otherwise, is it okay?

On the Web dev topic:
First of I am not a professional Web Dev but I am striving to become one when I finished University.
Not sure if by "getting my foot off the ground" you mean finding a job or getting into web dev.
For the later I can recommend teamtreehouse.com(25$/month) or look into codeacademy which is free.
I can only recommend teamtreehouse, especially for a beginner.

if you want to max things out i would go for the gtx 1080 (msi or evga edition) if you dont mind playing on medium/ high settings then the 1070 will probably do just fine

as for the monitor something like this

u/LeEpicBlob · 1 pointr/ultrawidemasterrace

AOC has a 34" 3440x1440 IPS display priced at $550 at best buy and amazon https://www.amazon.com/AOC-Professional-U3477PQU-34-Inch-LED-Lit/dp/B00RYZU2ZW

Seems decent, some people have even overclocked it to 75hz. Had an AOC before my current ultrawide and absolutely loved it.
