Speedtests only count if you are wired.

This looks to be the device you have.

To replace it you would need a cable modem and a separate router/access point. The router/access point can be used with any provider, FYI. I linked newer wireless AC models there because it is the current spec but downgrades for older devices (N, G). Figure $50 for the modem and $120 for the router/access point to get your top-end price.

Here is why everyone tells you to buy. Look at how much do you pay per month to rent the current device? $5 USD/mo. is $60/year. How long do you plan to have residential internet service? If it is more than one (1) year then your provider is making pure profit from you renting. The modem I currently have I bought in 2012 for ~90 USD. That's $210 less than I would have paid COX @5/mo. If that rental fee is $9.99/mo. then you pay $120/yr to COX and the choice to buy becomes even easier.

The nickle and dime per month is death by one thousand papercuts.

Like this?

Edit: This is what I have now. it's Docsis 3.0 compliant and it's the one I've had for a couple years now (originally had 15/1)

Okay, I can't get any pictures for now but i can link the exact modem and picture.

This is the router I own: http://www.amazon.com/Belkin-N-Wireless-Router-F5D8233-4/dp/B000RMPP5Q/ref=sr_1_32?ie=UTF8&qid=1463326757&sr=8-32&keywords=belkin+n+router

Now, I do NOT have it connected. I know because it is literally unplugged and my laptop and phone still get the wifi I had set up initially when getting internet. Which is timewarner cable btw.

This is the modem I own: http://www.amazon.com/Arris-Touchstone-DG860A-compliant-Gateway/dp/B008O8B2NY/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1463327020&sr=8-1&keywords=arris+dg860

This was given to me by timewarner cable that all I did was plug in and go. I then gave it password "x" (not literally, its longer and with numbers too).

I have seen him using some kind of router thing before. I have researched up how to use the router, and all they do I plug it in with an ethernet cable, the belkin does NOT flash the security light nor the wifi light when I connect, do I need to use a program?

  1. ISP is Time Warner Cable. My cable modem is Arris DG860 (http://www.amazon.com/Arris-Touchstone-DG860A-compliant-Gateway/dp/B008O8B2NY)

  2. I am linked up via wifi using TP-Link TL-WN722N (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833704045). I have not tested both because I don't have a cable that runs into the PC room, but as I said before this problem is relatively new.

  3. PC is custom built, solid gear. I can give a DxDiag or specs if necessary. Running Windows 7.

Haven't updated the drivers in a while, so I'll get on that.
