to go into this - http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B015QZVA6G?colid=2QLX08WTHREL9&coliid=I2Z13PW6DWHIER&psc=1&ref_=wl_it_dp_o_pC_nS_ttl
i get the 850 evo + caddy on wednesday but dont get the laptop til Friday and i'll let you know if it works.
The most optimal setup for your case would be to have all your music/pictures on an external drive, and all your games and your Windows OS on an internal SSD drive. Especially if you don't need to access your music/pictures frequently, it should noticeably speed up your games and boot time.
That being said, here are some of my recommendations:
This one doesn't have an internal SSD, but the processor and the GPU (graphics) makes this one attractive:
If you are willing to dip a little over your budget, you have a few more options that gets the best of both (the Amazon site gives you several customization options):
I didn't have time to pull up performance benchmarks for each of them, so you might want to look into them if you want a more thorough comparison.
Thanks for the input.
I'm between that Dell or this ASUS, http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B015QZVA6G/ref=ask_ql_qh_dp_hza , which would you recommend? I'd buy an additional 256gb. SSD with the ASUS. The ASUS has a better processor but the Dell has 4GB for Graphics which I don't really need, right? Editing music and film would be fine with 2GB, right?
Thanks!
799 USD = 1066 CAD
The laptop in this link is the same laptop, but 30 dollars cheaper for Canucks, and within your $100 extended limit.

THIS will be best for you I think. Less than £800, will play most games you throw at it (Will run the likes of GTA 5 no problem).
No SSD, but you can pick them up for less than £50 these days easy.
looks good
I got this one which has a similar graphics card for £700 and it works great, can run most modern games on medium settings.

Sorry bout that,

I bought this a few weeks ago: http://www.amazon.ca/ASUS-GL551JW-WH71-WX-15-6-Inch-Laptop/dp/B015QZVA6G/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1451165693&sr=8-3&keywords=asus
It's got a GTX 960m which will handle Sims (And Crysis!) I'm very very happy with it. Significantly, it's priced at $799 USD and Amazon.ca is selling it for $1,039 CAD which is significantly cheaper than the crappy exchange rate would put it (~$1,105 CAD). And the Amazon.ca price is much better than other Canadian retailers selling it for $1,200+
If the big factor here is graphics card, go for the Asus GL551JW rather than the GK+L752vw - same graphics card but the GL551JW is $350 cheaper.
This one has an i7 if it's a concern, I don't know much about laptops honestly. But if you use "960M" as a search term, you can find a selection of different laptops.
liar liar pants on FUCKING fire.

this one is 825$.
What's the difference betwen the Dell Inspiron and this
Asus-GL551JW
Thanks
Asus GL551JW-WH71
Acer Aspire VN7-592G
MSI Prestige PE60 6QE-086UK
Asus N551VW-FW238T
For a light gamer, as in I play GW2, WoW (sometimes), hearthstone, and an occasional steam game, is this laptop a little overkill?
1st: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B015QZVA6G?colid=2B8O796YOPT4S&coliid=IESSF18TCI5QK&psc=1&ref_=wl_it_dp_o_pC_nS_ttl
and is there a big difference with this one? My issue with it is the 250gb ssd. I want a 1tb storage, but the ssd is nice.

If I am not mistaken the Acer has just GT 940M Gpu which is not really ideal for gaming.
You should look for something like:
Asus1
Asus2
Msi
ASUS GL551 15-inch Gaming Laptop [2014 Model] https://www.amazon.com/dp/B015QZVA6G/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_7jgPzb2MGTVPB
That's basically mine but I have a 256GB SSD instead of a 1TB HDD. I use a 1TB external and put all my games and stuff on it so so I dont slow the computer down even more. Bought it in 2015 for like $600-$700
Well gaming laptops are going to be fairly heavy because of added weight of cooling needed to run games. But laptops are not more then 7 pounds and with a backpack 7 pounds is not big deal. For that price you can get a real gaming laptop. MSI and Asus has some pretty good models specifically for gaming. http://www.amazon.com/GL551-15-inch-Gaming-Laptiop-Model/dp/B015QZVA6G for example is 6 lbs and 15 inches so will fit in almost all backpacks.
that base config comes with 4gb ram and an i5, try to get at least 8gb of ram. I would go for this one:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Asus-GL551JW-WH71-4720HQ-2-6-3-6GHz-Windows/dp/B015QZVA6G/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1458073469&sr=8-1&keywords=ASUS+ROG+GL551JW-WH71
but Desktop > laptop
It's an Asus. Here it is on Amazon. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B015QZVA6G/ref=cm_sw_r_sms_c_api_jH41xb0ETYM8H
Been playing overwatch a lot lately.
This should do the trick:
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Asus-GL551JW-WH71-4720HQ-2-6-3-6GHz-Windows/dp/B015QZVA6G/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1467495564&sr=8-1&keywords=ROG+G501VW
I doubt it is very future-proof, but this should run all your favourite games on Medium settings.
A $1000 can get you a gaming laptop. The one I own is an Asus ROG GL551JW. It's pretty solid, you can run any game that from 2 years ago. Rocket League can be maxed and playing Zelda on Dolphin emulator is great. Here's a link to it on Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/GL551-15-inch-Gaming-Laptiop-Model/dp/B015QZVA6G?ie=UTF8&keywords=asus%20gl551&qid=1464704276&ref_=sr_1_1&sr=8-1
I own a Dell 7559 i5 model. I'll say its cooling system is too good for its price. You can add a HDD & 8GB RAM
HP Omen looks good, but I have doubt about it cooling system. If the laptop stays too hot while gaming, it can affect its components in the long run (my old Y500 started giving many issues after 3 years)
For looks you can also consider Asus GL552VW or this old model
http://www.amazon.com/GL551-15-inch-Gaming-Laptiop-Model/dp/B015QZVA6G/ref=sr_1_48?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1463328998&sr=1-48
Dell one runs cooler than those two under gaming
