iBuyPower sells rebranded Clevo and MSI laptops. The Battalion N155RD is a rebranded Clevo N155RD. You can find the same laptop at XoticPC, Sagernotebooks, GentechPC, Powernotebooks and so on for less.

In my opinion it's not worth it. You can get similar specced laptops from big OEMs (Asus, Dell, MSI) with similar specs for the same price or even less, e.g. the Asus ROG GL552VW-DH71 (also available at Best Buy or the Microsoft Store). The MSI PE60 6QE-054US would be also another decent alternative.

what about this?

> ASUS ROG laptop (15 inch 2016) (1200$)

Most of the Asus 6700HQ/960m laptops retailed for ~$1000. Did you pay more than retail?

Get this. Will run Skyrim with mods, DotA etc. GTA V and games like those on ultra settings easily.

i have an 1000 dollar gaming Laptop that has an i7 processor, a M.2 SSD of 128 GB for the operating system, a SSD of 400 GB for storage (you can add a bigger SSD for memory, AND I can send the 1 TB hybrid SSD hard drive it came with - it's easy to mod btw if you ever want to upgrade it. I got it specifically to make music, but quickly realized the laptop just didn't fit my lifestyle since I have a desktop that I prefer to make music on. I will ship this to you for 500 bucks if you're interested. It is fairly powerful, and you'd be getting a very special bargain. if you'd like to know more PM me. no worries if you aren't interested.

The Asus Rog recommended below would be a very nice option. In case you really want to go below $1000 though, you could go for the ASUS ROG GL552VW-DH71 which is also a great laptop and would do almost the same job as the one recommended below. Also, it will run those games you mentioned very well.

u/construktz · 3 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

Portable Picker is kind of a bitch because it doesn't give any context to the suggestions it makes. It's just a search engine, basically.

If you're playing Fallout 4 and working with CAD, you should probably go for a full TDP processor like an i7-6700HQ. That beingf said, the Asus ROG GL552VW isn't a bad option. The keyboard is great on it, the specs are solid, and it has an open M.2 slot so you can throw an SSD in when you decide to (and I would playing FO4. That game is loading screen after loading screen).

You can take a look at this list as well to check out any other options within your budget. You may see something else you like better.

u/EskimoNoise · 3 pointsr/pcmasterrace

Take a look at the ASUS ROG GL552VW-DH71
It's got a 15" 1080p screen, 2.6GHz i7, 16GB ram, 1TB HDD and a GTX 960m

u/Shadestones · 2 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

I was unable to find a core i5 model in the price range you offered for either MSI or Alienware, however this Asus ROG laptop meets all the requirements your friend has, but also has a Core i7-6700HQ.
The Nvidia 960M should be plenty enough for those games at 1080p + 60 FPS: https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B01578ZKPO/ref=mp_s_a_1_8?ie=UTF8&qid=1479200856&sr=1-8

Both the 15-inch and 17-inch model fit within that price range.

u/OddLawnGnome · 2 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

You have a pretty wide gulf in your budget, I can make suggestions around the $1500 range but you are pretty much jumping straight from $1000 to $1500. Being a dollar-for-perfomance kind of guy, I would stick to the $1000 end of the scale. 5.5 pounds, full power i7 HQ series/16GB of DDR4 for audio/video work, and a GTX960M for games. For Battlefield 1 (based on Battlefield 4 performance) I would expect you to be getting 30+ FPS minimum at medium kind of settings.

The aesthetics are pretty much subjective, but given you were already looking at a ROG model I'm guessing you're ok with it. Definitely one of the more restrained gaming laptops, unlike Razer with that ridiculous logo that never truly turns off despite what the settings say.

On that note, forget the Stealth and forget the whole eGPU option. It's just not there, you're getting a gimped processor and having to spend WAY more for WAY less in the specs department.

u/Michiganders · 2 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

I think your best value would be to buy a 15 inch ASUS rog GL552 and buy a separate SSD to add to it if you know how to.

ASUS ROG's are tanks and very high quality. It could definitely last years and years.

u/trainedtech88 · 2 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

take a look at this decent ASUS ROG GL552VW-DH71 it may not have an ssd however its a solidly built laptop that will certainly meet the demands of your requirements. it comes with a nice Powerful 6th-generation Intel Core i7-6700HQ cpu, 16GB RAM, 1TB storage space and a dedicated NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960M gaming graphic card.

u/cantrnsorry · 2 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

The GL552VW is a great choice. Battery, graphics for games, DVD drive, portability, aesthetics, etc. Can't go wrong. It's a little heavy though, at 5.6 lbs. You can also opt for a HDD + SSD combo for $1,180.

u/TiDDeR- · 2 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

Asus ROG for $1000

I'm sure there are better, but this is the cheapest one that i've had my eye on for a bit. You can get a better laptop approaching the $2000 range (better CPU and GPU)

For gaming laptops, be prepared to go BIG on your budget to get performance. That laptop would probably suffice, but the Asus ROG that I linked would give you better bang, probably constant 60 FPS. I'd also reccomend when you do get your laptop, cracking into the BIOS settings and force turning off the Intel Integrated Graphics so that you don't have any problems with that.

u/XDave121X · 2 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

Not sure if this will help but just gonna post a product that i saw online that is somewhat similar to the specs you have given

I believe this laptop will suit most of your needs:

ASUS ROG GL552VW-DH71 15-Inch Gaming Laptop, Discrete GPU GeForce GTX 960M 2GB VRAM, 16GB DDR4, 1TB ($999.00)

I chose it because it has powerful, up-to-date internals and is not as heavy as other laptops in the same range. The option I linked does not come with an aditional SSD though. You should also consider that the inclusion of an optical drive will mean the laptop will be less portable due to the added mass.

The quad-core CPU paired with the discrete GPU will run all the apps you require with ease.

Hope this works for you.

u/Alakazaaamm · 2 pointsr/edmproduction

I would recommend the terabyte HDD. If you're only using it for light gaming, the drop in speed by using a HDD would not really be an issue, unless the games you play are very large with high graphics requirements. Even then, the computer would probably be limited by your GPU rather than memory access speed, and from what I can tell, this laptop does not have a gaming GPU such as a 960m from nvidia. Also, for schoolwork, the extra space could come in handy and the diffference in about 800GB of storage between the 2 options is huge.

For reference purposes, I have this laptop: http://www.amazon.com/GL552VW-DH71-15-Inch-Discrete-GeForce-Metallic/dp/B01578ZKPO?ie=UTF8&psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00

It has a 960m nvidia graphics processor and a 1TB HDD with 16GB RAM. I can run games like League of Legends on high graphics, and games such as Fallout 4 and Witcher 3 on medium to medium-high graphics without any fps issues. Again, I think for gaming purposes, the GPU is what is most important, but in terms of schoolwork, an SSD would make daily things like saving or video processing a bit quicker. In fact, honestly speaking, schoolwork can be done with any computer really, it is the hardware requirements for gaming that would take the most money to support.

u/JzKy24 · 2 pointsr/pcmasterrace

This is probably the cheapest laptop, its not really a gaming laptop tho, but some people consider it as a gaming laptop, but it can handle minecraft tho, since it has an i5-6200U, and minecraft is a CPU bound game, also the laptop has a GT 940M, but It cant handle modern games, can watch this video for the review

but If she can spend $1000 on a laptop
I recommend the this asus laptop or this acer laptop
both are almost the same, but the asus has 16gbs of ram, the acer also has a 16gb ram option, but the price will rise up to $1300, so probably you should get the asus, and add $100 or $200 more on the asus and you will get a 128GB ssd and 4GBs of Vram

If she has a budget higher than that, then I can recommend another laptop, but at this budget, I recommend building a PC

You can go to PortablePicker, it is a laptop/tablet ver of pcpartpicker, it can help you find the best laptop for her budget

Sorry if my english is bad

u/AdityaRav · 2 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

I would suggest Asus ROG GL552VW which currently sells on amazon for 979$. It is probably overkill for your gaming requirements but serves all other requirements pretty well with 16gb ram and a DVD R/W drive too.

Keep in mind battery life is pretty short(~2-3hrs max) and weighs a ton but since you don't seem to mind these it's a great deal.

NOTE: I suggest you upgrade with a 128gb m.2 ssd. It's very easy to swap in and can offer a much better performance for just about 70$.(total 1050$ just over your budget):

I'm a Mac guy so I'm not the best to recommend specific models. Buy as much as you can afford (and potentially replace if you spilt coffee on it one day). Extra money spent now could lead to unfathomable gains in unlocked creative potential!

Get as close to these specs as you can:
http://amzn.com/B01578ZKPO

  • Quad Core Processor 2GHz or above, or (Dual Core ~3GHz and up but I think I'm being a little unrealistic in that...)
  • RAM 12GB or 16GB (I don't trust Windows with 8GB)
More RAM = MORE INSTRUMENTS PER SONG!!!! BIG TTUUUUUNNENEESSSSSSS!!!!!!!!
  • Hard Disk Drive of 500GB or above at 7200RPM (NOT 5400RPM)
This is a tricky one, HDDs are actually the main source of performance bottlenecking for most PCs. Working with audio may require reading & writing large audio files at the same time. Obviously an SSD wins this war but not on price. You can spread hard-drive load across multiple external drives in Ableton, and I imagine you can do the same in FL. I keep my sampled instrument libraries on an external drive now to alleviate my struggling 5400RPM HDD. I would not wish my drop outs and load times on anyone.
500GB will be enough until you start piling on the sample libraries and an extortionate lossless music collection. 1TB recommended.
  • Full HD Display (1920x1080) on an ideally 15"+ Screen
You'll need as much screen real estate as you can get. For all those VST windows and FL editors.
  • 3x USB 3.0 ports desirable for MIDI peripherals & external HDDs
You can connect MIDI controllers & a mouse/keyboard to a USB hub, but HDDs don't like to share.

I think I like the 15. it has a faster hard drive, new chip(though its debatable if thats better) and also has the ips display. The MSI keeps making me question it though. I am driving myself nuts over this decision!

Much appreciated - I got another suggestion for the ASUS ROG GL552VW-DH71 and to drop in the Samsung 850 EVO 250 GB M.2 SSD. (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01578ZKPO?keywords=ASUS%20ROG%20GL552VW-DH71&qid=1456940213&ref_=sr_1_1&sr=8-1)

-In terms of the customization on the Sager, would I add the SSD as the OS Drive? There are a few options, and I'm an idiot, so I figured asking is better than assuming.

I am buying this https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01578ZKPO/ref=od_aui_detailpages00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

u/syndergod34 · 1 pointr/SuggestALaptop

The g501 is currently out of stock on newegg, is there anyway to find out if it will be coming back? Also, what about the ASUS ROG GL552 it seems pretty comparable and is in stock.

u/CheesyGamingFTW · 1 pointr/Twitch

If you want a laptop, this might be good, if you want faster boot times, go with the higher cost one, as it has an SSD as well, but the base one should be good.

u/WowMyNameIsUnique · 1 pointr/laptops

Thanks, this info will definitely help.

I've been looking into the Asus ROG series actually, and I think that's what I want. I was especially looking at this GL552VW-DH71, actually, with the 128 GB SSD and 4G VRAM, at http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B01578ZKPO/ref=psdcmw_565108_t1_B00T7XRH2A?th=1&psc=1.

What do you think of this one? The only problems I could find are that it has some minor software problems, but a few updates and setting changes should take care of those. Also, some reviews expressed a mild disappointment towards the touchpad, but I'm not too deterred.

Or would you still recommend that last laptop you mentioned? My problem with it is that it's a little too big. I'm looking at the 15" range, I think.

The inpirosn 7559 seem to be a solid option right now. I'm not sure about what apps you'll use and if an i7 with extra threads would help. The i5 is $800 i'd think would probably be completely fine for you since its a quad core version. Comes with a 250gb m.2 ssd with an open drive bay for you to add your own hdd, so figure an additional $60 for that.

i5:

I've got an older ASUS ROG laptop I use when TDY. The two things to look for are a discrete graphics card and a larger screen. If you don't mind the extra weight and size, the 17" screens are great for gaming. Something like this

u/ministrsinister · 1 pointr/SuggestALaptop

The i-gpu is alright for games, though it will struggle at higher settings. It really does depend but for those games, again, low-medium will get you decent frames. If you're looking for a 13" with an dedicated & powerful GPU don't expect good battery life or good build quality. I'm not even sure if there is a 13" with a dedicated chip... you may have to look for something like a 15" Asus or this Dell Inspiron with a GTX 960M, but really... the battery life is kind of terrible.

Those three laptops you mentioned have a duel core CPU which is not ideal in video editing and 3D rendering. Same logic applies for the ram (16 GB is preferred).

http://www.amazon.com/GL552VW-DH71-15-Inch-Discrete-GeForce-Metallic/dp/B01578ZKPO/ref=sr_1_3?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1459274624&sr=1-3&keywords=laptop+6700hq
Note: You could go with the cheaper model and add a SSD to save dosh(Will lose 2gb of VRAM from GPU).
Note: I screwed up this laptop is heavy(5.6 pounds).

Eluktronics P640RE 1250$(Did a lot of digging for this)
http://www.amazon.com/Eluktronics-P640RE-14-0-Inch-i7-6700HQ-Performance/dp/B01BNI4YF4/ref=cm_cr_arp_d_product_top?ie=UTF8
Note: Has a 970m GPU unlike the other two which has 960m(60-70% better) and is the only laptop I've seen with a 14" screen at this price with these specs. Only real con I see is that I am not familiar with that brand and will probably have bad battery life.

Hi,

At the price basically the Acer VX5 is the only option. However it's not the best for photo editing.

For photo editing you want an ASUS gaming laptop, which unfortunately are more expensive. I found a slightly older model here which you could get for $850 factory refurbished.

You have a lot more options, but most of them don't have colour reproduction good enough for photo editing.

Here we go OP.

A few of my reccomendations are below. Most gaming laptops at the 1k price point will be the same. $1000 will usually get you a 15", i7 with a GTX960M.

These specs are absolutely fine to graphically max out games like CS:GO, Overwatch, Gary's Mod, LoL, HoTS, DoTA.

The GTX960M is going to be pushed to it's max running more recent games like Witcher 3, BF1, The Division etc.. but you should be able to turn down the graphics settings to Medium to get to around 60FPS.

Check below.

There are two choices here that I can see. Either the Dell Inspiron 7559 or the ASUS ROG GL552VW-DH71 The Inspiron is about $150 cheaper and run the same specs aside from having 8GB of DDR3 in single channel (upgradeable) vs the ROG's 16GB of DDR4 in single channel as well. Really it up to you, there's some benifit to having DDR4 and the single stick of 16GB but it's a matter of if you want to spend the extra $150ish. Don't forget tax and shipping!

For a 15" this would work.

u/ThatMathsyBardguy · 1 pointr/buildapc

I would recommend the Asus ROG series, this has pretty much the same specs as what he's planning on buying, except for a much better graphics card. I have to admit though, I'm not sure how taxes and stuff work where you are. It's possible that that really is the best you'll get for that price in your country, if so I apologise for jumping in with my comment, but it's worth looking around anyway.

u/antitankassaultman · 1 pointr/pcmasterrace

I have one of these and it suits me well.

Seems there have been some complaints about the trackpad and some drivers that did not work properly.

I found this review:

http://www.trustedreviews.com/asus-rog-gl552vw-review

There are also many user reviews on amazon and newegg:

http://www.amazon.com/GL552VW-DH71-15-Inch-Discrete-GeForce-Metallic/dp/B01578ZKPO

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834232769

The reviews are quite mixed, many very positive and many very negative.

Just gonna throw this one into the ring as well. The touchscreen may or may not be something extra that comes in handy. I probably wouldn't use it for much during production but it could have some live uses.

Decent CPU, more than enough space, 8GBs RAM. I know it would cover your DAW-related needs pretty well but the graphics card probably isn't what you're looking for if animation is going down too. Still thought I'd mention it.

edit: Here's one more that's a bit more expensive. I think it fits all of your needs pretty well though and it's still just under $1000.

That does seem like a great computer for the price. Similar price range to the dell mentioned below, but looks like it has got some better specs. I've also got this Asus ROG computer on my short list.
http://www.amazon.com/GL552VW-DH71-15-Inch-Discrete-GeForce-Metallic/dp/B01578ZKPO/ref=sr_1_1?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1459271836&sr=1-1&keywords=ASUS+ROG+GL552VW-DH71+Intel+i7+2.6GHz+16GB+DDR4+1TB+HDD+GTX960M+2GB+15.6-inch+Full+HD+Gaming+Laptop
That Asus ROG computer looks to have really similar specs to the one you have listed with the major difference only being the price range, processor, and RAM. Also, thanks for the advice. I really appreciate it!

Oh, didn't notice the 970 lol. I realize this is a terribly specific question, and I probably can't afford either even if I wanted one of them, but which do you think is more powerful in general use, the Gigabyte or this version of the GL552VW with a SSD found here

Edit; Never mind, seems like if I want more power I'm gonna have to aim for a 970

So I narrowed down my selects to these two:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01578ZKPO/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_nS_ttl?_encoding=UTF8&colid=26KB8RCPUZQ68&coliid=I11J3NJAK3AM9J&psc=1

and

The biggest difference is the ASUS one has 16GB of RAM and the Toshiba has 12GB. It's about $100 extra for the 16GB one; Is it worth the extra hundred for that extra bit of RAM?

If I may ask why does it have to be an ultra book? Honestly most asus or Msi 15 inch computers will fit in a normal backpack. And you can get so much more for your money.

https://www.amazon.com/GL552VW-DH71-15-Inch-Discrete-GeForce-Metallic/dp/B01578ZKPO#nav-search-keywords

This is under 1000 and it would work fantastic.

u/omega44xt · 1 pointr/SuggestALaptop

I won't recommend getting a 4K screen on a laptop. 1080p is the sweet spot. Anyways you won't get a 4K screen in your budget.

Check this

Add a 120GB SSD

u/nican · 1 pointr/factorio

I have a https://www.amazon.com/GL552VW-DH71-15-Inch-Discrete-GeForce-Metallic/dp/B01578ZKPO . Factorio runs at 60/60 FPS/UPS no problem, even on larger bases.

u/8bitzawad · 1 pointr/pebble

My Asus GL552 has the same specs, and I put an SSD in mine. Looks nice though.

What is your price range?

Desktop for example (now you can build your own or find a low end brand for cheaper, the following is simply a suggestion and not the best option)

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B015XK1SFM/ref=psdc_565098_t2_B018FX48O2

http://www.amazon.com/Gigabyte-GeForce-GDDR5-Graphics-GV-N950OC-2GD/dp/B013XFK0R6/ref=sr_1_16?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1457986927&sr=1-16&keywords=nvidia+950

$850 just got you a new PC that will carry you way into legion.

~$1000 will net you a pretty great ASUS ROG laptop which is a killer entry level gaming laptop

AVOID AMD video in laptops. Just run away!

u/thekevinmeister · 0 pointsr/laptops

say no more, i have the perfect laptop for you. for me, whenever i look to buy gaming laptops, i always look to asus

for example try this: https://www.amazon.com/GL552VW-DH71-15-Inch-Discrete-GeForce-Metallic/dp/B01578ZKPO/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1467005842&sr=8-2&keywords=asus+gaming

although it might have a 960m, i think thats more than adequate enough to play games at decent enough settings. :)
