Fuck, my comment got not through...

Again, you only need 64Bit for utilizing more than 3,5gigs of ram.

But i wont lie, you will notice that you only have 2gigs of ram, especially after having at last >15 tabs in chrome open (because chrome and tabs kills ram).
And the Atoms are not i3’s. But the TDP is awesome, and so its silent and runs for at least 8 hours.

Ninjaedit: i overread that you have or want to buy new. For 300$ you can get a 4gig version, but the surface 3 new with 4gigs is over 300$.

Thats the 4gig version of the Asus T100.

Looks like your post got caught in the spam filter. Not sure why, since it isn't either of the usual suspects (shadowban, linking a url shortener). Might have something to do with the Amazon affiliate tag in your link.

I'm assuming you just copy/pasted the link from one of the review sites and the tag is theirs, but mind editing it out? You can cut everything after the ASIN, so the link would read:

http://www.amazon.com/Transformer-T100HA-C4-GR-10-1-inch-Touchscreen-Laptop/dp/B014854RGK

Sorry for the hassle, since you obviously put a good deal of work into the post! Just lemme know after and I can approve it :)

I don't know about the T102. I have had a T100HA, which has similar specs, for the better part of a year. If MS office is your main use, then it is a pretty good tablet, at a very affordable price point ($270 US).

i bought this one a while back and it works fine for VNs, aside from it overheating a ton if you try to run a VN inside of a winXP VM! (which still works okay i guess)

the price does seem a little inflated from what i bought it at about a year ago but should still be low-ish. mostly thirdparty sales though. I'm sure there's other decent ones on amazon that are also in that resolution range worth buying...

they're definitely becoming rarer though yes

I have a refurb Acer Chromebook R11 that is running crouton for applications like ViM and occasionally Libreoffice. This augments my aging Lenovo T430 laptop that is still my primary workhorse. I do use the Acer daily; however, I only use it for browsing and light editing.

Things I like

  • fast to start up
  • long battery life
  • quick to charge
  • light enough to travel with (though not as small as my poor Asus T100HA that was damaged when it fell from a stool and landed on the charging cable that was plugged in) and capable enough to handle 90% of what I need to do when I'm traveling
  • keyboard is pretty good for extended writing; and I am able to edit with vim that is my preferred writing platform

    Things I don't like

  • It doesn't have the Thinkpad joystick
  • It's not really very good for photo editing/processing (my Thinkpad hard drive is much larger and faster; my Thinkpad has 16Gb of RAM) or for video editing.

Anything chromecast-like (including e.g. firestick) in nature would have huge trouble with mots of those points.

But if you get a small laptop, all of this would be easy as pie, complete non-issues.

Even a small convertible, like an Acer Switch or an Asus Transformer would be great. Those are slightly too sluggish for actual productivity work (but you wouldn't do that on a chromecast either) and of course, unable to actual 3D gaming on it, but video performance for streaming and outputting video over HDMI should be more than fine.

If you look at mini-laptops/convertibles like this one as replacements for tablets/streamingboxes, then they're great devices with a lot of use.

Be careful though, that you don't look at them as laptops, and compare them to fully-powered PCs, because that will make them seem limited and slow.

But set one down, open Powerpoint on it, and you can run a presentation from the internal disk or any USB stick that you can just plug in. Without wifi. Or connect it to wifi and just go to www.netflix.com just like you would with any other PC. Or connect a regular wireless mouse and do those tasks from a few metres away.

Have you bothered to look at the Asus T100TA and/or the newer T100HA? It's small, pretty thin, light, excellent battery life and only $300-350.

EDIT Oops my bad I see you want something more than a Atom processor.
Well the C720 i3 is only $358.00 right now. It's under that $400 mark you stated.

> Why did you suggest Zenpad ? It is an android tab, right ?

Yep, it's arguably the best 8" tablet right now (trades blows with the Mi Pad 2) and the base model can be had for very cheap (I've seen it as low as $160)

> My budget is quite low, and only Xiaomi Mi Pad 2 (windows version) seems to be in budget. I think I'll go with it

It's a nice device (USB Type-C and everything). Can be a bit hard to get though.

It also has some odd features missing (like GPS, microSD, and front facing speakers) and can be a bit small (8" is pretty small for a tablet. It's more of a reading device, and less of a gaming device).

If you're willing to lug around a keyboard, there are some cheap 10-12" devices that flip, or even some cheap devices that detach.

The ASUS Transformer Book T100HA in the $299 MSRP config has:

  • A fully detachable 10" IPS tablet (only 1280x800 though)
  • 64 GB of storage
  • 4 GB of RAM
  • Windows 10
  • Intel x5-Z8500
  • dual-band wifi
  • decent camera (nothing crazy though)
  • USB Type-C
  • USB Type-A port
  • MicroUSB
  • micro HDMI
  • microSD
  • microphone/headphone jack

PCMag, Trusted Reviews, and Notebookcheck all liked it.

There are higher end models with 1920x1080+ displays for a bit extra.

Asus Transformer book T100HA hits all your points, plus it charges on MicroUSB.

Detachable, Atom x5 processor, 4GB RAM, 64GB eMMC storage, and 10+ hours battery life on lightweight tasks. I own this machine personally. $269 currently on Amazon

Honestly, no.

Let me explain.

http://www.amazon.com/Transformer-T100HA-C4-GR-10-1-inch-Touchscreen-Laptop/dp/B014854RGK - I purchased this tablet because it had the form factor I wanted at a good, solid price. However, about a day into using it, I realized the resolution was so poor, I could actually not make out the details on some panels, nor could my wife who has far better eyes.

Another option I considered is the Kindle Fire. However, if you look at the included comparison chart, you'll see the Fire HD series has better DPI than the 7, but only the Kindle Fire HD 6 has anything better than the Transformer (252 dpi). I believe I found somewhere the Transformer has a 150dpi, but I cannot find that source, so you can see how stark of a difference that is.

For the price, it's definitely usable (the Fire and the Transformer), but I felt like I was missing out on a lot of the experience, and I was lacking a laptop.

We are, unfortunately, still in that span where no one has created the perfect Comic Reader.

How would something like this compare to the Asus you mentioned?

Acer Aspire E 15 $349

Thinkpad 13 Chromebook $239, has two of them. Uses Chome OS, not sure if they would mind.

Asus Transformer T100HA $253, 2-in-1 form factor.

u/aloisdg · 1 pointr/csharp

Yes this one: Intel Quad-Core Cherry Trail x5-Z8500 1.44GHz (Turbo up to 2.24GHz). I own this model.

Well if you wanted something super cheap, my best suggestion would be THIS. The Asus Transformer Book T100HA-C4-GR. It's pretty small and definitely portable, and does have a a USB C port. The downsides are that it only has 4GB Ram, 64GB storage, and base 1.44GHz processor. Might not be enough, but if you want the extra $800 back it might be worth it with an external drive. I've also personally always loved Asus laptops they seem to always have great quality build.

u/Kasendou · 1 pointr/xboxone

Probably something like an Asus Transformer would work. (I don't own one, but I thought about getting them when they were on sale.)

https://www.amazon.com/Transformer-T100HA-C4-GR-10-1-Inch-Touchscreen-Quad-Core/dp/B014854RGK/

I use my Surface Pro 3, but that's triple the cost and typically for more than just streaming/browsing/emails.

What about ASUS Transformer Book because it comes with 10.1-Inch 2 in 1 Touchscreen Laptop(just like you wanted) (Cherry Trail Quad-Core Z8500 Processor, 4GB RAM(best you can get for this budget), 64GB Storage(should be enough for docs), Windows 10
