EDIT: I always recommend to avoid used laptops: they usually have serious battery issues (thst may bring to some other); they may have run up to overheat a lot (yeah, MacBooks overheat a lot when you run Ps, etc); monitor may be stressed, so connections or the screen itself may be damaged in a way you can't find until it breaks all at a sudden.

I don't know what engineering students actually need, but assuming you'll use autocad or solidworks, then you'll probably need some sort of dedicated GPU. An MX150 or RX540 seems reasonable, without being overly expensive or power hungry. An integrated GPU is fine too, assuming you won't do anything too hard tbh.

As for CPUs, find something like an i7 or i5 that ends with a "U" (i7-***U). If you care about battery life, you will not do well with a high powered CPU (anything that ends with "H" or "HQ" or "HK"). The "U" indicates a low power consumption processor.

Some people might recommend getting a quadro, firepro, or an actual gaming GPU, but that's going to absolutely wreck your laptop battery life. Besides, I don't think you'll do anything that* intensive.

How about this ASUS VivoBook S ? It would be a good pick.. Very portable, has a decent battery life and definitely has the performance power you need for the tasks above that you do.

For your needs more RAM and CPU power is ideal, in terms of raw power the Dell G3 15 G3579 would be hard to beat at your price point. Even when configured with the basic components the Intel Core i5-8300H processor is almost 20% better than the 8th gen i7 U processor of the Vivobook that you listed

I would buy Asus Vivobook S from Amazon. It comes with Asus Warranty card and you can get a full refund within 30 days of purchase.

I actually see that Zenbook for $999 on Amazon which is great. I like that it is all SSD but don't like that it's not upgradable. The upgrade from 8GB to 16GB is nice, I'm just not sure if its worth the extra $200 from options like This

I will be using this laptop solely for school. I am in IT major and need a laptop that will handle workloads and one that will last. Would ideally like to have an SSD for fast switching over from different OS and as well as additional disk space for a fair amount of work can be an additional HDD/combination of both SSD and HDD/SSD but whatever is cheaper xd.
