How much did you spend on the converter? All the ones I see that would work (since you have dual-link DVI) are expensive

The HDMI probably won't work
You also need to make sure you have a dual link DVI (probably DVI D) cable. Here is a picture of the differences

They aren't cheap. I'm not really sure why the output has to be in DP. If you're looking for higher res output and don't have the DP ports to support two monitors, the above option will do the trick.
Here's the Amazon link. You'll also need a miniDP to DP cable, like this one (cheapest I could find). I couldn't find a DP version on the manufacturer's website, but according to this overclock.net thread, you should get the full 144hz. Good luck!
Unfortunately the only way to go from DVI output to DP input is to use an active adapter, like this one: https://www.amazon.com/AT-DP400-Displayport-Converter-Designed-Convert/dp/B003CWEXWO
You'd be better off getting a new video card with DP output; it would cost a lot less.
