I'm an audio engineer and for years swore by my ATH-M50s and M70s which are high-end closed headphones. After buying a pair of Sennheiser HD 600s, I'll never go back to closed headphones to mix or simply listen to music (except when I need to record with a mic to avoid sound leakage).

The soundstage is more expansive; there isn't artificial bass buildup; and the audio is more detailed overall.

EDIT: spelling

If you ever feel the need to pull the trigger on some really good value higher-middle end headphones you should check these out. They used to be cheaper, and therefore better value and more talked about, but they're amazing headphones if not traveling. Ironic. I also have mild tinnitus at just this moment upon returning from my concert. Steam inhalation sounds like something you could do while listening to music.

And it is a real opinion. It's just wrong. "Gay or european" is just a meme. I'm too young to grasp who took the tight shirt thing from who, I'm sure there's some stylistic context or something. If you use that as the barometer for who's gay you're going to find yourself surrounded my far more gay people men (I don't know much about girls) than you realise. You got your Rob Halford gays as well, along with the Matt Bomer gays, the Simon Amstell gays (which are really far more prevalent by the way; the tight shirt thing was a product of the 80's and 90's, the new millennium was the rise of the hipster), of course the Elton John gays which are getting rarer. I guess the scene gays are kind of the tight shirt gays. More often than not they don't bother with the shirts though, which is nice. Then all the rest of them who are just guys who like dick, who can creep undetected. Gay acceptance has allowed gay stereotypes to grow and evolve.

> good alternatives to these headphones with good bang for my buck

I got a chance to demo those Sonys. Can't say enough good things about them.

Also worth looking into Audio-Technica AT-M70X ($223). AT's new flagship monitor headphone with an amazing sound. Definitely gives the Sonys a run for their money, especially with such a competitive price. I might even like them better.

I'm also quite fond of NAD Viso HP50 ($249). Just an incredible closed-back can.

>amp designed for headphone listening, that I can plug into my Macbook pro and that is hopefully less than $100.

Nothing really worth looking at under $100. Maybe Creative E3 ($99) or Topping TP30 ($99).

However, if you save money on headphones by going with the AT-M70X or the Sennheiser Momentum 2.0 (which are on sale for like $149), you could put the money you saved towards a better amp/DAC.

So if we assume a budget of, say, $200 for an amp/DAC, you can step up to something like Creative E5 ($189), Fiio E17 ($139) (it's even portable!), or Topping TP32EX ($159). Fiio probably makes the best offering in this range.

m40x - $75-100

-cheaper, under $100 pretty good bang for your buck

-fairly old model with 40mm drivers and no bass port

-somewhat flat sound signature

-closed style headphones, detachable audio cable

-all plastic construction with use of fake leather (can get warm for long listening)

-I noticed a slight lack in the mid to low bass in terms of detail. Other than that the sound quality is quite impressive for the price

m70x - $200-250

-better build quality using metal, and I think real leather (still odd choice to have a plastic headband top)

-very flat sound signature

-very detailed sound considered to be a true monitor headphone, some say too bright for a relaxing listening session

-45mm drivers

-closed headphones, detachable audio cable

If I use this with my phone, an LG G5, is there anything I am truly missing from my setup? Do I need a DAC?

You want flat sound to remove the 'bass boost', seems like you are aware of this already. I haven't tried the m70 but used to use the m40fs which were excellent, they don't seem to make them anymore.

I tried the m20 and m40 and both suffered from a poor build quality imo. The 'beats' effect seems to have caused the medium tier headphones to skimp on quality and spend more on packaging. The m70 looks to be just outside this range but I haven't tried them myself but would also like to see what people think of them.

For listening to music, the M50x is pretty, pretty darn flat to the point that your average listener will really enjoy listening to the music. However, I think it's worth pointing out that they aren't truly flat, there is a little bit of a bass boost. But I think that's actually what you want if you're just listening to music. If you're looking to go into production, you'd want to look into the ATH-M70x, which is truly flat. The thing is though a lot of people report the M70x sound kind of tinny, which is because they're actually flat. The M50x sounds better listening to music because there's that subtle bass boost you're used to when listening to music. That being said, I have the M50x and I love it.

tl;dr M50x if you want to listen to music, M70x if you want to produce music as well.

I think a good match for you would be the M70x. These have a neutral sound signature, are around your price range, and have a bunch of nice features, and great accessories. You could also go for the M50x and save some cash, similar shtick but at a lower price point (they often go to like ~80 on sale).
