Just kidding XD

Here are some (a little) more expensive closed cans:

Audio-Technica ATH-MSR7

Audio-Technica ATH-a1000Z (this one has attached cable)

Both are supposed to have amazing soundstage (for a closed can), but also do DT 770.

Are better those las two I told you? Probably. Are they worth the extra expense? Meeeeeeh, I don't really know. We are hitting diminishing returns here, where 2x the price no longer gives you 2x audio quality. Everything increases here, audio quality, build quality, premium finish, package, etc etc, what I can't assure you is that you are going to hear more footsteps and its origin with more expensive cans.

Remember, what makes the bigger difference is not the gun, but the shooter!

u/Kerry56 · 2 pointsr/headphones

Closed, I'd suggest the ATH-MSR7.

Others you might consider are the AKG K550 and K553.

u/x152 · 2 pointsr/headphones

sony mdr1a or ath msr7 (ath msr7 isolate more)

u/cub31993 · 2 pointsr/htc

If you really want to get into Hi-Res and audiophile grade headphones then you should get something like Audio Technica MSR7 , Philips Fidelio L2 or Sony MDR-1R

Edit: In-ear that are good enough for Hi-Res would be: RHA 750i, Sony XBA-H3 or Shure SE425

u/xPurplexAnarchyx · 2 pointsr/headphones

I would suggest the Nad Viso HP50 or the Audio-Technica MSR7; the only con I have for the former was how it looks on your head, I actually haven't heard the latter but it's well regarded. You'll most likely prefer the former over the latter as the former can be considered on the warm side of neutral and the latter can be considered on the bright side of neutral.

If you don't mind the fact that it's discontinued the Audio-Technica ATH-A900x is another good choice but you might perceive it to be lacking bass impact. For me the A900x is more comfortable than the HP50 but I have a fairly large head and the A900x fits more comfortably on those with large heads and loose on those with average or smaller heads.

Few here are willing to recommend a wireless headphone due to the tradeoff you get in terms of sound or value.

u/arynthesizer · 2 pointsr/headphones

Absolutely stick with the Audio Technicas if you can. I own the Bose QC25's and I like em but only for the noise cancelling. Sound isn't good for the price and I'm an EDM listener as well. In terms of sound, the deal that the ATH-MSR7's are at right now is an absolute no-brainer, there's a noise-cancelling version if you need it too.

You could get a used audio technica msr7 for around 110 euro+shipping
https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/offer-listing/B00PEU9CFA

I personally wouldn't recomend the senn hd4.50 unless you really need a wireless headset and even then I think the mee audio matrix cenima sounds better.

In my opinion

I just upgraded from my 50x's and they are pretty amazing.

u/FatS4cks · 1 pointr/headphones

V-moda m-100 seem like a good fit. You can get larger earpads if the stock ones are too small. And they also have a removable cable so you can get a mic if you really want.

Sony MDR-1A are also a decent option, it's a pain in the ass with the mic compared to the other headphones around the same price though.

Audio Technica ATH-MSR7 are also pretty good and can also fit a mic like the m-100.

Audio Techica ATH-WS1100iS are a cheaper alternative to the MSR7 with a different sound signature and can also fit the mic.

Budget - ~300, Flexible

Source - Galaxy S6, Desktop PC, or Mpow Bluetooth v4.1 Receiver

Requirements for Isolation - More Isolation. I plan to use these in my office and in public

Preferred Type of Headphone - Over-ear/ full sized

Preferred tonal balance - I prefer a more natural balance, maybe some emphasized bass and mids, but nothing crazy. Just some cans that are a pure joy to listen to.

Past headphones - Sennheiser earbuds (old, and not sure which model), Sony Gold Playstation headset

Preferred Music - A pretty wide range, mostly acoustic and alternative (Lewis Watson, Cody Fry, John Mayer). Classic rock (Queen) and more modern rock (Thirty Seconds to Mars, Pierce the Veil). Piano centered classical (Ludovico Einaudi). A bit of EDM/ Pop/ House music (DJ Snake, Kygo, Lauv). Some hip-hop/ rap (Run the Jewels)

What would you like to improve on from your set-up - For my next set I'm really looking for a pair of closed backs that are a joy to listen to for hours, with the best sound stage and positioning (I'd like to use these for gaming as well). I know that's difficult for closed backs obviously, but I have come up with some potential choices:

u/www-ListenUp-com · 1 pointr/audiophile

/r/Headphones will be instrumental to your search.

That being said, I would recommend any of the following:

u/ibzrg1570 · 1 pointr/Metalcore

Honestly, you're better off asking /r/headphones. I'm definitely not an expert on this topic, but I'll help however I can.

Let's start by referring to the frequency response chart for the M50x (top left corner). The "in-your-face" range for male vocals to cut through the mix occurs around 5 kHz, which are at -25 dB. No wonder vocals sound overpowered. For comparison, here is the same chart for another closed back, over ear headphone, the Oppo PM-3. Like most headphones of this type, they also have a decline from 2 kHz to 5 kHz, but they're only at -15 dB around 5 kHz. As a result, vocals cut through much better. I own these headphones and I think they still sound like the vocalist is standing a couple inches too far away from the mic. If I'm using an EQ, I add a +3 dB boost to get them to where I like. Hopefully that helps contextualize just how bad I personally think the M50x is for guitar based music with vocals.

As far as recommendations go, it really depends on your budget and sound signature preference besides allowing vocals to cut through the guitars. I'm assuming you'll want another closed back headphone and to stay somewhat close to the price range of the M50x. At $400, the PM-3 is a bit pricey and a bit too boring for metalcore. You might like the Fostex T40RP for $140, but they're pretty hard to drive with just your phone or computer, and the sub-bass drop off is noticeable if you A/B with another headphone. The NAD Viso HP50 retails for $250 and has gotten pretty good reviews, as did the Audio-Technica ATH-MSR7 which usually goes for $180-200 on Amazon. I have not listened to either of these headphones myself, as I tend to gravitate toward open headphones, but based on my research I would start with those. I highly recommend checking out /r/headphones' daily purchase advice thread to get thoughts from people who've actually tried these headphones or have other suggestions.

Several good options on Amazon DE - there is a button to change language to english on the website.

Before we go into the options. Soundstage and imagining can help you determine where a gunshot or footsteps come from in an FPS for instance, or if there is something behind you in an RPG(Skyrim, Fallout(a mix of rpg and shooter) and in MMORPGs you can hear if the boss drops shit behind you. This is primarily regarding gaming, getting into how soundstage and imagine works in music would be too long to explain. But this is the basics.

Open back: Better soundstage and Imaging - Mostly good for FPS games(but you can hear people in the room around you)

AKG K712 - I used to both listen to music and game with these, and they are a good value

Beyerdynamic DT 880 - I use this one for all genres, though it might be too analytical for you

Audio Technica ATH-AD700x - These are absolutely amazing for FPS games, but you might find them a bit boring in the music department coming from the A40s

Closed back : These close you off from the outside world, imaging isn't as good, but you won't hear people around you as much IRL

Beyerdynamic Custon One Pro - They have a rather bass heavy sound signature, but the highs are clear and can be useful(depending on the game you play.

Sennheiser Momentum 2 Over-Ear(cabled version) - They aren't the best for shooters, but all other kinds of games they can do just fine. They are 56% off right now.

Audio Technica ATH-MSR7BK - These are highly regarded for gaming and are also an amazing all rounder for music

Audio Technica ATH-A700x - These are the closed back version of the AD700x they are good for gaming and a good all rounder, because of their closed back they have a warmer sound than the AD700x which is rather cold.

u/Hennniii · 1 pointr/headphones

Budget - $200 hard limit (USA)

Source - PC

Requirements for Isolation - Yes, from the research I've done closed-back headphones are good for this?

Will you be using these Headphones in Public? No

Preferred Type of Headphone - Full-sized (circumaural?)

Preferred tonal balance - I think I want some headphones that are more toward the bass side but not too heavy. I play a few shooters (RS2Vietnam, BF1, CSGO, ARMA 3) and I think the music I listen to is on the mid-low side. Sorry if this sounds vague I just discovered this subreddit a few days ago.

Past headphones - Right now i'm rockin some $10 earbuds from Wal-Mart, not sure of the brand but its all-white i'm assuming Apple?

Preferred Music - I will mostly be using this for gaming and watching shows/movies/anime >90% of the time, but for the music I will be listening to, some R&B, Hip hop, lofi hip hop, Deep House, Flume, ODESZA, Chet Faker, Big House EDM, The Strokes, Arctic Monkeys, Franz Ferdinand, Weezer, Tokyo Police Club, Coconut Records

What would you like to improve on from your set-up - Better sound quality and some comfort. I would prefer it if they were compatible with a BoomPro mic, but it is not a requirement.

I did some looking and I came upon these pairs as possible headphones that might be good for what i'm looking for. The first two are what i'm leaning towards and the rest are in no specific order.

Are these headphones appropriate for what i'm looking for? If not may I get a suggestion for what you think would be better? Also, what YouTube channels should I watch for reviews and to learn more about headphones in general? The only one I've watched so far is ZReviews.

For my last question, I am considering buying a soundcard (the Xonar DGX) with these headphones, is it enough to power the DT770 model i'm looking at?

Sorry for the wall of text, I was trying to be as detailed as I could with my limited knowledge. Thank you for reading this and your time!

u/dibujor · 1 pointr/headphones

What is your budget: 200 € that should include any potential Amp/Dac needed to run the cans

Source: pretty old Desktop PC. Integrated Realtek HD Onboard sound. Have a soundblaster. I don't know if it works properly though. Maybe I'll hook them to a PS4 too every now and then.

Isolation: Don't need to be totally isolated from exterior world. I'll use these mainly at night. Sadly I think I have to
dismiss open or semiopen cans because my wife will be at a 2-3 meters from me, sleeping. Maybe in the future can look into some open cans
for daytime use.

Used in Public? No, home office, interior only

Preferred type of headphone: Full size, circumaural.

Preferred tonal balance: I don't really know, and I'll explain. These will be my workhorse. I'll use them to play
music while working (work at home as an illustrator), skype with clients, discord with friends (I'll be buying the AntLion Modmic)
edit videos (not music videos though), Films, Youtube, Playing games...
So I guess they have to be a bit allrounder. That means neutral? Can't really tell, this will be my first pair of
"good" headphones, or the first pair I've done research instead of picking the first cans I saw on the shelf.

Past headphones: An assortment of cheap headphones and a couple gaming sets (don't even recall the names).
The ones I have now are a pair of Philips SHP2000. You can tell almost anything will be an improvement.

Preferred Music: I listen to almost everything, from classical to hip hop. Jazz, Blues, Rock, Metal, Folk. It really depends on my mood.
So not much help here either to go for a defined tonal balance I'm afraid.

Location: Spain, I have access to Amazon.es, Ebay, etc. Don't know much of this world so couldn't tell any place audio specific.

What would you like from your headphones? As I said I want them to be a bit of allrounder. I want to clearly hear the voices when I'm
voice chatting, Clear sound when playing music and Good sound when gaming. And since I'll be wearing them several hours a day, they should be comfortable.

I have an average (towards big because of hair) head and average ears but I do wear glasse so maybe that's a concern if the grip is too tigh.
I know all this "requirements" mean they won't be the best at anything but I'm not an audiophile either....yet, I guess.

I've been researching a lot of reviews, videos, forums and I've seen a lot of recomendations, and situations similar to mine.
So I thought asking here with the template would help me to nitpickc and better tailor the buy for me, since I'm spending that much (for me anyway, I know this hobby can go pretty crazy pretty fast).
In fact in my initial research I wanted to spend max 200€ inclusing the modmic (so that left 130-150 for the headphones) but looking and researching had me raising the dough destined to the cans by a bit everytime
just in case "this new ones they recommend maybe are much better".

I have a list of what I found after a lot of research. I don't even know if any of those will be any good for my situation. There are two "leagues" of cans there as you'll see,
but those really cheap ones I included because I see them recommended a lot as "sound as headphones double or triple their price". Maybe that's BS but... maybe not and I can save me some money

The ones over 200€ I might consider them if they are really, REALLY much, much, much better than any of the other options.
Since going over 200 would have me waiting a bit more to get the cash.

Here's what I have:

  • Superlux HD681 and HD668B - 31€ & 38€ respectively at Amazon. These are the ones people recommend as "above their league" so I included them here. I know they're Samson ripoffs?

  • Beyerdynamic D770 Pro - 125€ at Amazon. Another ones with a lot of recommendations, along with the M50X. Some say better, some say equal...

  • Audio Technica ATH M50X - 135€ at Amazon. Seem people either love 'em or hate 'em. Youtubers favourite (not that that's a valid reason to pick a pair of cans for me anyway). I know there are way better options, they're here just because they fit into my price range

  • Soundmagic HP150 - 150€ at Amazon. Seen a few recommendations for this ones.

  • Beyerdynamic Custom One Pro - 150€ at Amazon. Seen them recommended here

  • Sony MDR-1A - 185€ at Amazon. Late addition from a few reviews I read

  • Audio Technica MSR 7BK - 185€ at Amazon. The bigger, better, improved brother of the M50X?

  • Audio Technica ATH A900x - 219€ at Amazon. Seems these run for more than that, and people love them, but at that price they're out of my budget. May consider waiting for them if they're absolutely the best for my situation

  • B&O BeoPlay H6 - 238€ at Amazon. Same as the A900x. These are also damn sexy looking like everything Bang & Olufsen does (but that doesn't count towards my decision ;D)

Of course this is only a list of what I've found during my research, but feel free to recommend me anything you feel can be better for me even if not on the list.

    Thank you very much.

Budget: Up to £175

Source: Desktop PC (may get an amp later but not now) and possibly my phone (OnePlus 3)

Requirements for Isolation: I'll be using them at home mainly, but it can be noisy so I want pretty good isolation and have been looking at closed back headphones almost exclusively

Will you be using these Headphones in Public?: Occasionally

Preferred Type of Headphone: Over-ear

Preferred tonal balance: Wanting a fairly balanced sound, a little bit of a V signature

Past headphones: Nothing of any note, everything sounded 'good enough'

Preferred Music: Mostly electronic with some pop mostly. I'd also be using these for gaming but don't want the sound signatures or gimmicks associated with gaming headsets

What would you like to improve: Clearer, more detailed sound and generally a more balanced signature

Location: GB

I've already done some of my own research and have found several pairs that seem to offer what I am looking for: Audio-Technica ATH-MSR7BK, Sennheiser HD 598CS (cursing myself for missing these when the were £90) and the Sennheiser Momentum 2.0 (the iOS variant as they're within budget, don't know how well they'll play with my Android phone however). Having trouble deciding between these, though I am open to any other suggestions of course. I did consider the Audio Technica M50X's as I've heard many good things about them but wanted a (and I know this is subjective) good looking pair of headphones.

Thanks! :)

An overview of all submitted deals will be collected in this sticky comment. If you find that one of the deal has run out please let me know. Off-topic top level comments asking what to buy will be removed, deals that are missing some of the info will not make it to the list. I have changed the the suggested sorting to "new".

Budget - Looking between 200-300 USD but its not a hard number. If there is a set thats beyond next level for 350 I would spend the extra

Source - Mostly a desktop setup. Going to be using a DAC/amp, modi magni combo

Requirements for Isolation - Dont really want any noise leakage so it is most likely going to have to be closed back. Dont have to be noise cancelling but dont really want any ambient noise coming in or bleeding out

Preferred Type of Headphone - I have a massive melon so I feel its going to have to be a large set of over ear.

Preferred tonal balance - A nice overall balanced sound would be nice. Some slightly pronounced bass but nothing too punchy.

Past headphones - Havent really owned a sweet set of cans. I have a pair of AKG K181 for DJing but nothing serious

Preferred Music - Little bit of everything. Dont need absurd bass but I do want to have some clear mids and highs. Something universal for all

What would you like to improve on from your set-up - Its just a gaming headset now, so anything really is an improvement. Switching to a mic setup that I want to pair with a great sounding headset to hear things like I have never heard them before

Location - I do live in Canada but most products will be purchasable here. Getting most items isnt a problem.

A couple sets I have been looking at are:

Focal Listen

Audio-Technica ATH-MSR7BK

V-Moda Crossfade M-100

I would like to hear input about what the more seasoned audiophiles think of my choices or other suggestions I havent considered. All input is appreciated :)

The Mod Team decided to place a more structured post on Black Friday deals. A lot of people are already invested in this thread so I will just sticky this here. Deals at some of the major retailers are likely to come and go often so it will be impossible to have this be fully accurate 100% of the time. If you have any deals you want to see in this sticky post feels free to message me(I WILL miss plenty of deals), otherwise you are still free to post below of course. Lastly, these are just good deals off of MSRP and I will generally post regardless of whatever personal thoughts I have on X, Y, or Z product. I will shortly add a few more categories beyond speakers.

If you want to use them on the go youd need to be looking at closed headphones so sound does not leak out (the ones you have named are both open, and therefore will let sound in and out).

If you are looking to use a mic as well you either need a set that have an inbuilt mic on the cable or buy something like the Vmoda boom pro (so the headphones will need a detachable cable)

Audio Technica make a good few models for you to check out, M40x, M50x and MSR7

Other then those, Shure 840, various beyerdynamic's, and on the cheap side Brainwavz HM5 and HM9.

As you have a lot of options the best thing would be to buy potential headphones from somewhere with a good returns policy and trial them, or go to a store that has a good selection for you to listen to.
