You can get a cheap usb condenser mic. Not ideal over a more expensive xlr mic setup (watch the video I linked at the end, it explains a lot there), but for just gaming it's better than pretty much any headset. If you don't have room on the desk, there's the Antlion Modmic. Overpriced for the sound quality imo, but it should still be better than most headsets. I'm not sure if the a40s have a detachable cable, but if they do you can also get the V-moda boompro. I've used mine for a few years before upgrading to the ATR2500, and it sounds almost as good as the standalone mic and I like the sound signature much more than the Antlion. The only downside being some hiss that the condenser doesn't have, and it needs power from one of the channels for the mic to work, so you need to adjust the center for the headphones. Ideally if you're just using voice chat in games and in programs like Teamspeak, Discord, Mumble or whatever, the most you should be spending is around $50.

Here's a video if you wanna take the plunge and get something more professional for voice overs some time in the future.

This was on the wiki,I didn't want to get one off the wiki because I don't know how to determine what I need/what's good.

u/Insomniacs_Ink · 3 pointsr/DnD

I use Audacity for the software with this microphone to record. It's a solid combo, especially for amateurs like us.

u/Pyroraptor · 3 pointsr/youtubers

Blue Snowball $48

ATR2500 USB $57

CAD U37 $47

Personally I use the Blue snowball (DON'T get the ICE version). It's a favorite among newer YouTubers. Same with the ATR2500. Haven't used the CAD U37, but heard good things. If you have more money look into the Blue Yeti or the AT2020 mic. Also the Rode Podcaster.

Don't forget to get a Pop filter which will help a lot. Also I suggest using Audacity to record, (and it is free). If you need help with Audacity, here's a good video to get you started

u/YUDoDisReddit · 3 pointsr/battlestations

I'd suggest that you cancel the order on the snowball and get an Audio Technica ATR-2500.

I'm using it now and I HIGHLY recommend it, especially since it's only $67 Just get a $5-$10 mic arm and you're golden. A lot of people that have the snowball that I've talked to say that it's best to get something else around the same price, but do whatever you want.

u/pronhaul2012 · 3 pointsr/BudgetAudiophile

If you can get another $7, get this.

http://www.amazon.com/Audio-Technica-ATR2500-USB-Cardioid-Condenser-Microphone/dp/B004QJREXM/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1417244278&sr=8-2&keywords=audio+technica+condenser+mic

A-T is a big name in mics and I trust them more than most. I don't own that mic in particular but I've owned A-T products before and they've all been quality.

u/Trilingual · 3 pointsr/buildapcsales

I personally have the Audio-Technica AT2500. https://www.amazon.com/Audio-Technica-ATR2500-USB-Cardioid-Condenser-Microphone/dp/B004QJREXM/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1496517572&sr=8-2&keywords=audio+technica+usb+mic

This is one that I can attest to for having perfect quality. I got mine, however, when it was on sale for $45 years ago. I am confident that there are even cheaper ones today that will be just as good. However, it may take some research to find the right ones that are cheap, but not crappy. You can search for mic tests on YouTube.

u/LADYBIRD_HILL · 3 pointsr/letsplay

In my own research, I also found the same thing to be true. Honestly, the biggest advantage of the snowball is the convenience. If you end up returning it, i'd recommend the Audio-Technica ATR2500. IMO for the $20 increase in price it is absolutely worth it.

u/illuxion · 3 pointsr/pcmasterrace

It's odd because I find the modmic4 to be a bit bass heavy for my voice.

AT2020 is very popular as is ATR-2500. This seems like a good starter pack though I haven't heard that mic personally. Pick up a mic boom and pop filter as well. Room acoustics can play a bit to it too, if you want to improve the sound from there look into a mic shield, though I'd go the DIY route, from there the sky is the limit with room treatment and an empty wallet.

Hit youtube and search best USB microphone and go from there. There's tons of videos.

u/m1stertim · 2 pointsr/audioengineering

For that mic, or any XLR mic, you will need an external preamp. That's why you can't use your motherboard's sound card and you need a USB sound card - just not like the one you linked. As you noted, the $5 one won't help you here.

They are more commonly called "audio interfaces," and here is a cheap example.

Alternatively, you can get a combination device - a microphone with USB out, which has a preamp built in, like this one.

More information on these basics can be found in the sidebar over there -->

u/A_Hideous_Beast · 2 pointsr/youtube

Well right now I'm doing Console games, I use the El Gato Capture HD (Which is awesome) and use the XO4 Headphones from Turtle beach. Just bought this mic http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004QJREXM/ref=od_aui_detailpages00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 so now I no longer have to use a shitty webcam mic.

I also made a little animation for my intro, but I'm thinking I have to change the channel art a bit.

I'm curious about keywording, I hear it's supah important, and want to be able to reach the largest amount of people possible with it.

u/thegurujim · 2 pointsr/CODYoutube

How much you willing to spend on a new mic?
http://www.amazon.com/Audio-Technica-ATR2500-USB-Cardioid-Condenser-Microphone/dp/B004QJREXM/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1368069534&sr=8-1&keywords=voice+over+microphone

This is a good price for a decently performing mic. If your going to do a dual commentary you both either need your own mic or lean in so you don't have to boost the audio so much that you get background noise.

u/OsamaBeenModdin · 2 pointsr/battlestations

The speakers are passive (unpowered), so they need much more power than the aux port on your motherboard can offer. Many PC speakers are powered on their own, so they don't need a separate amp. If you go with passive speakers you need either an amp or a receiver.

For less than $300 on all of that you might want to go with powered PC speakers instead of passive+amp which would give you some money to throw at a better set of headphones. This might be controversial around here, but I would highly advise against a gaming headset. For the same amount of money as a gaming headset you can get much better audio quality with a good set of headphones and a separate mic. You have lots of mic options, some can even connect right to the headphones.

If you want to go with passive speakers plus an amp, here is a quick setup I threw together:

u/Temporarily__Alone · 2 pointsr/videography

Ok, well in the meantime, even something like this will record waaaay better audio than recording audio-only from your 60d.

Source: I own a 60d, zoom h4n and many usb mics and interfaces.

u/RedMoth11 · 2 pointsr/pcmasterrace

none of them need mic capability.
just plugging the mic in to the mic jack on the computer is fine.
unless you have a nice mic, which you would get a usb interface for.
the audio thru a mic input, is more based on the mic quality rather than the sound card quality.
usb interface: scarlet solo + mic: at2020 or usb mic at2500usb

u/MortusX · 2 pointsr/letsplay

I use the Audio Technica ATR 2500-USB. I'm more satisfied with it than I was with my Blue Snowball in terms of audio quality.

u/FiveCentPrincess · 2 pointsr/buildapcsales

Audio Technica AT2020 currently $99. There are both regular and USB models.

For those who don't mind USB, there is also the ATR2500 for $66.

u/maskedintruder0 · 2 pointsr/letsplay

I have the AT2500 USB, and it works great. It has a headphone jack for monitoring that works great, and no real delay. i bought a Suspension arm for it and it works like a dream. You can find them online for under 100 bucks

Did some research. Found you three options.

  1. Samson Meteor Mic This one is probably my least favorite of the three I found but it works. It has a bit of an airy sound to it which may be fixable with a Pop Filter. Works fine for your budget though I don't know how it'll do in your group style. Here's a test if you're curious how it sounds.

  2. Blue Microphones Snowball This one is a bit better. Pop filter recommended.Doesn't sound too shabby though long distances might be a problem. Here's a test for you.

  3. Audio-Technica ATR2500 this one is a step down from what I own. It's also the most expensive though you can buy used or refurbished if you need to. Since this is a condenser mic, it handles distance a lot better and the audio comes out clearer. Out of all of these I recommend this the most. Here's a test if you're unsure.

    Hope this helped!

u/SKiring · 2 pointsr/pcmasterrace

In all honesty, the DT770s have some clarity issues, especially compared to the M50 (subjective!).

However at 80 ohms, they REALLY need an AMP to be driven properly. In that case you are going to be spending more.

My microphone recommendations are limited sadly, but these three come to mind:
CAD U37 USB Studio Condenser Recording Microphone.
Audio-Technica ATR2500-USB Cardioid Condenser USB Microphone

and if you can find it at a lower price, this one is HIGHLY recommended:
Audio Technica AT2020

u/EnglishTimelord · 2 pointsr/pcmasterrace

High end costs a lot of money, more than $200, but $200 is still going to get you plenty.

On ear headphones sit on your ear, over ear ones rest around your ear on your head.

You could just buy a mic then you would be set, or pick up some HiFi headphones too. Its up to you and how much would want to spend.

Closed backed headphones have the outside made of a solid material to block the noise going in and out. Open backed headphones just have some kind of mesh to let the sound in and out, this gives a performance benefit but means anyone nearby will be able to hear the music.

For some ideas for headphones, HD598, A500x, M50x, SHP9500. As for the mic, the modmic is a popular choice.

What kind of sound do you want?

If you like your Bose headphones then you could get a good mic, possibly like this one or this one.

u/StayFrosty7 · 2 pointsr/pcmasterrace

Audio Technica ATR-2500 for $75

CAD u37 for $50

Snowball iCE for $50

Samson Go

Samson C01 for $70

If you can pony up a bit, the Blue Yeti Blackout for $130 will blow these other mics out of the water (not to say that they're bad, but this one is really good in comparison).

Also, don't forget to get a stand (preferably a scissor stand for your desk) and a pop filter.

u/MrSmannams · 2 pointsr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

This would help me out a lot. I'm kinda trying to start a career for the future and owning this would speed up that process. I wish it were a little cheaper though, I feel bad asking for it.

u/DaveDragonface117 · 1 pointr/letsplay

Depends on what you're going for...on the mic side I would totally recommend the "Blue" brand mics. They're cheap(ish), reliable, sound fantastic and are very simple to use. The Audiotechnica mics are pretty good as well, here's my [personal favorite] (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004QJREXM/ref=s9_simh_gw_p267_d4_i2?pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_s=center-2&pf_rd_r=195GX3VX0C1R7HKTJWNK&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=1389517282&pf_rd_i=507846)

Editing:
For editing there's a lot of choices, a ton. Personally I'm a big fan of
Premiere Pro and Adobe Creative Cloud overall. I'm also studying graphic design and finding out how those skills can be used to enhance my let's plays. So the package comes with Premiere Pro, Photoshop (for image editing/graphic design), After Effects(for any effects heavy work, how I make the intros to videos, etc.

If you JUST want barebones editing and nothing too fancy Sony Vegas is a really easy piece of software to learn, it's not too difficult and can create some nice videos without much experience.

Capture:
I don't know much on this one...at least for consoles. I've used and tried out every piece of recording software for the PC although, still recommend and go with FRAPS. It takes up a LOT of space, but it works the best and never really fails. Console-wise...I would go with the Elgato. It seems the most appealing to me, but considering you want to capture legacy consoles it does't really work/

I hope I helped, I'll answer any questions if you have any! :)

I had the ICE and had nothing but problems with it. Switched to an ART2500. Best mic I've ever had. No longer picks up my keyboard background noise like the snowball ICE

[Audio Technica ATR2500] (http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B004QJREXM?pc_redir=1411972014&robot_redir=1 ). The sound quality is good, but can sometimes be picky about the direction you speak from, but I believe that's by design.

u/umos199 · 1 pointr/pcmasterrace

invest in a desktop/studio mic. the issue with mics mounted in a headset is that the housing for them bounces sound really easy. Along with a narrow receiving angles for sound can cause a tunnel-like sound for those hearing you from it,

I use the steel series arctic 5 with this desktop mic it sounds great as the headset is 7.1 surround sound, and those who talk to me can hear the full range of my voice clearly. unless I'm talking from lack of sleep. then nobody can understand me.

u/CreaminFreeman · 1 pointr/battlestations

I'm a noob with this stuff too. I was guessing that's how it worked. Currently, I've got my headphones going through my Audio-Technica ATR2500 which seems all good and well, but it's not without its issues. For some reason I've been getting intermittent static and noise through my Audio-Technica AD700, oddly enough it's every once in a while when my wife turns on the light in the office.
This has led me to casually keep my eye out for a less temperamental solution. I'll be adding the E10K to my list of things to look into.

Quick edit: I realize the equipment that I have might make me seem like I'm not a noob, but I made a conscious effort a few years not to become an audiophile lest I spend a ton of money. Currently, I'm just trying to tip my toe back in, haha!

u/FlamingSnowball · 1 pointr/microphones

The AT2020 is okay, especially for the budget you're on. I like the ATR2500-USB, although its a tad more expensive than the 2020. If you're really not looking to spend money and not fool with an interface, the ATR2100-USB is a decent option. Here are reviews for both of them so you can get an idea of what they sound like: The 2500 The 2100

u/Quackinator100 · 1 pointr/audioengineering

Considering buying this microphone/stand/pop filter. What I wanted to know was, what are the main differences between the AT2020 and the ATR2500? The 2500 is about 40$ less, and I figured there might be a reason why. Any and all advice is appreciated.

u/markherrington5 · 1 pointr/Guitar

I think my problem is the difference between what the Pod is sending to my computer vs. what I am hearing. Everything sounds good to my ears coming through my amp, like I think I said earlier. Would putting a microphone like this one in front of my amp allow me to record exactly what I am hearing?

u/SearingPhoenix · 1 pointr/buildapc

Headsets.

You can spend 75-100 dollars and get an... alright pair of headphones. And an... alright mic...

Or you can take that same hundred dollars, spend some on a pair of Audio Technica ATH-M30s and an Audio Technica ATR 2500

Hell, spend a fair bit more and get the vaunted ATH-M50s

Bottom line, you do a few things:

  • Uncompromised quality. You have good quality audio from a good mic, and excellent sound from good headphones.
  • If one breaks, you replace the one part, not the whole unit. Cat knocks your mic off the desk and destroys it? Replace the mic, keep your cans, or vice versa.

Now, I understand the whole, "But what about sound isolation! I live in a noisy environment!" Okay, fair. Go get a modmic if you must.
u/strickolas · 1 pointr/makinghiphop

Listen kid, you don't need a lot of money to make brilliant music. A friend of mine uses this mic: http://www.amazon.com/Audio-Technica-ATR2500-USB-Cardioid-Condenser-Microphone/dp/B004QJREXM/ref=pd_cp_MI_2

You can Pirate FL studio. If you want to produce, I suggest the MPD18 for a windows 7 PC. I have it, it's lightweight and just beautiful. If your getting a keyboard, get atleast a 54 key, otherwise its kinda lame.

ALIENWARE MAKES THE SHITTIEST LAPTOPS, THEY'RE OVERPRICES AS FUCK. What I do suggest is spending good money on either a Mac, DELL, or Gateway with a lot of ram and a good Harddrive.

Your computer should cost no less than $450.

u/RoseTylerI- · 1 pointr/microphones

Looks like this video is exactly what you need

While I'm not entirely familiar with either of the mics, I would recommend the ATR2500 which is I little above your price range but is also on sale an Amazon as of now.

u/tcookc · 1 pointr/Twitch

you could forego an overly expensive mic and pick up the new, great sounding ATR2500-USB. my $700 AT4050 sounds better...but probably not $535 worth of better

u/KrustyKrab223 · 1 pointr/buildapc

Virtual 7.1 is worthless. Also, if you're considering spending 300$, no headset will do you any good in that price range.

You'd be far better off getting a actual proper pair of headphones, like the Sennheiser HD598's or the Philips Fidelio SPH9500's if you want to spend a little less. To go along with one of those, get a decent studio mic, like the Blue Snowball or the Audio Technica ATR2500

If you want the microphone to be integrated to the the headphone, look no further than the ModMic 4.0

If you want a good little headset for relatively cheap, just get the Kingston HyperX Clouds. They beat practically any other headset out there, aside from like Sennheiser Game Zero's and Beyer MX300's, but those are over 3 times the price usually.

u/Cool-Beaner · 1 pointr/raspberry_pi

There's not much script there, just a few lines to find the device for your mic, and to configure it in alsa, and the single arecord (alsa record) command line.

I have a ATR2500USB in front of me right now. A little more delicate, but an excellent microphone at a great price. And it worked as far back as the Pi 1B.

Thanks for the info. I will play with Audacity on the Pi 3 as soon as I have some time. I currently have it running on Windows.

u/tipsandsmiles · 1 pointr/Music

> expensive

Maybe, maybe not. It really depends on what level of sophistication you are looking for. I don't do music, but for my videos I've been able to get very nice quality voice recordings from a fairly inexpensive microphone I bought on amazon

The reviews are great, the price is low, and I can say it works well from personal experience. Granted, it's not music experience, but if you'll be singing, this should work well.

u/EdwardHarleyGAME · 1 pointr/letsplay

I have the AT2020 so I'm not completely familiar with the 2500, but I think they'd function the same basic way you're asking about. The amazon page for the 2500 does say that the audio port in the front works as a monitoring port so you can hear yourself without delay. My 2020 also has one and it does work as an audio output source for all the audio from my computer, so I'm going to go out on a limb and say that the 2500 probably works as an audio output as well. You could probably check out the amazon page (http://www.amazon.com/Audio-Technica-ATR2500-USB-Cardioid-Condenser-Microphone/dp/B004QJREXM) for some of the questions and answers other people have given for the product.

u/natertot007 · 1 pointr/makinghiphop

People in the comments keep mentioning phantom power, but I must confess I do not know much about it. If I plugged two of those into my computer and my daw was able to recognize them such like a matched pair, would the sound quality significantly suffer from not having pre-amps and such?

u/AntiiGrav · 1 pointr/csgo

When I was looking for a mic, my tech friend sent me towards the Audio Technica ATR2500 because he said it was basically as good if not better than the 2020, but far cheaper.

I just recently picked up a new mic and so far I'm loving it. I haven't posted any videos using it yet but the quality I'm hearing is really good. I got the ATR2500. I was looking at the AT2020USB but I liked that the ATR2500 had a headphone jack on it so I could have zero latency voice in my hadphones. I considered the Blue Yeti but it was just more than I wanted to spend. I know lots use the AT2020 but I wanted the USB connection and that version was also more than I wanted to spend. The ATR2500 is $65.

u/JohannesVerne · 1 pointr/microphones

If you are getting a USB mic, the AT2020USB isn't bad. There are a few others to look at as well though, like the FiFine K670, CAD GXL2400, or the Audio-Technica ATR2500 for condensers, or the Samson Q2U or Audio-Technica AT2005 if you wanted a dynamic. If you can, listen to some tests and decide for yourself which sounds best between those and the AT2020USB.

With a USB mic, acoustic treatment is very important. They typically have a slightly harsh sound to the upper frequencies to begin with, and reverb from an untreated room will amplify that. If you can get the room treated it will still sound good, and the treatment can be anything from buying panels to throwing up some thick blankets against the walls. Even a high-end XLR setup will sound bad without a treated space, but USB mics tend to sound extra harsh if you don't have a treated room. So long as you have something to cut the echo, you should be fine.

If you’re looking for software, you’ll need OBS or something similar, this will give you almost all the tools you need on the software side.

There’s tons of add ons to get, but one other one I love is voicemeeter, it allows more fine tuning of your audio than OBS allows for.

here Is a great guide on how to make yourself sound better

As for hardware, [this]
(https://www.amazon.com/dp/B004QJREXM/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_9CLHDb5R3T53Q)is a really great cheap mic, and if you’re just starting out with twitch you can get away with [this]
(https://www.amazon.com/dp/B004FHO5Y6/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_PELHDbFYWFCAM) since twitch doesn’t let you stream in 1080 right away.

Any decent dynamic mic will do if you're rather stationary. I assume you need USB, so you could look at the t.bone MB 88U if you're in Europe, or the Audio-Technica ATR2100-USB. Maybe in combination with VoiceMeeter Banana, since often Windows 10 for some reason won't boost those mics properly.
