African black soap is very drying for your skin. I would suggest finding a gentler soap free cleanser to use. Like Cetaphil or this Aveeno wash which has the added benefit of colloidal oatmeal. Also be sure to moisturize your skin immediately after the shower, while your skin is still damp. And as often as you can. Like in the AM and after your shower and before you go to bed. Run a humidifier in your room while you sleep. Keep the heat turned down. Stay hydrated from the inside too.

Limit the time you spend in the shower and try to take showers with tepid water instead of hot.

I'm surprised that they're recommending antidepressants before steroids. Steroids aren't for long term use but they can help break the itch/scratch cycle.
