I thought the stock AKG earphones sounded remarkably good for a freebie set, but a lot of people question whether they're actually worth the $100 that Samsung pegs them at. So, I opened up my drawer of old headphones to do a comparison of the AKG earphones to some other sets that I have. Here's a pic. Clockwise from the top are the B&O Form 2, B&O A8, Phonak Audeo PFE 122, stock AKG, and Klipsch X10. Each set was priced between $150-250 when I got them, besides the AKG, and I even listened to the last gen Samsung freebies (not pictured).

Here's how is rank them:

  1. Klipsch X10. I forgot how good these sound. They are the smallest and most comfortable earphones I've ever owned. The sound is accurate, detailed, and balanced. You can pick out every instrument and vocal part when listening to a fairly complicated piece such as Rex Tremendae Majestatis from Mozart's Requiem. The crackling record and clock mechanism at the beginning of Zedd's Hourglass sound true to life and the bass drops are both tight and full. These have to be some of the best bang for your buck earphones every made.

  2. B&O A8. These also have great sound in a slick package. However, they do not isolate any sound at all, which is a plus if you want to be aware of your surroundings. They'd be great at the gym or while riding a bike or mountain slope. The foam covers that come with A8s are both fragile and necessary for the best sound. The old covers that came with them disintegrated when I put them in my ears. Without them, bass is extremely lacking. Luckily, I had the spare set of foam that came with the headset.

  3. B&O Form 2. These sound similar to the A8 but I cannot recommend them unless you have a really small head. With them fully extended, I can't get the headphones to sit completely on my ears. I have to tilt the headstrap behind my head to listen to these.

  4. AKG. Okay, put next to some of the other headphones in the same price neighborhood, the AKGs really show their glaring weaknesses. There are no mids. Complicated music sounds muddy and muddled. On the other hand, they are very fun to listen to EDM and Hip Hop on.

  5. Phonak Audeo PFE122. These balanced armatures have no bass. Although they are very detailed, the lack of bass makes violins sound like they have no soul.
