great suggestion for someone with a $100 budget, but $250 will buy /u/Eihabu cans that are just in a whole different league in terms of both audio quality and durability, among other factors. same deal for the ath-m50x. i think $250-350 price range has the best value, you're getting a lot more headphone for your money without hitting the diminishing returns of higher price tiers.

my personal recommendation would be the 2nd generation bang & olufsen H6. i have the first generation which are already my favorite portable headphones-- i also have sennheiser momentum and master & dynamic mh40-- and the 2nd gen fixes all of the issues with the first: brings up the bass a bit (great balance now), no longer requires a beefier amp to sound great (just plug them into your phone/laptop like any other cans and they sound amazing).

OP mentioned soundstage-- the h6 really excels at this as well as detail, and is really balanced so they're great for all kinds of music. they are also imho currently the best looking headphones in the market to date at any price range, of course this is subjective. they're light and comfortable to wear for a long time but also built really well. i've had my 1st gens for ~4 years and the only thing that's changed is a little patina on the leather ear pads; if i had gotten the black ones they'd be in like-new condition. the ear cups rotate to make the headphones flat for easier storage, though they don't fold in.

i use exclusively these for travel, and i also bring them to the office every day. noise isolation is on par for closed back headphones, but they don't have active noise cancellation & aren't as nice on a plane. personally i haven't considered active noise cancellation since it impacts sound quality, and i don't fly often enough to have a dedicated pair for that.

i'd honestly head over to /r/headphones for better advice, the BIFL crowd is too frugal-minded to take OP's budget seriously + there is a lot to know about headphones so the sub dedicated to it will be more knowledgeable and helpful.

And of course there are always the M40x 's, but many people do not find these comfortable out of the box. A pad upgrade is recommended.

None of these actually "max out" your budget, but they are all very solid picks.

1. Oppo PM-3 - Oppo's 3rd iteration of planar mangetic headphones are damn nice. They have incredible sound, bass that extends way down, crisp highs, and are very comfortable. They can be driven by the S8, but would definitely benefit from a nice amp/dac.
   
   
2. Sennheiser HD 650 Widely regarded as an extremely neutral headphone, they will reproduce anything you listen to with them with fantastic accuracy, clarity, and detail.
   
   
3. Bang & Olufsen H6 V2 or H7 These are my personal favorite of the pack, becuase of their incredbly balanced sound, replaceable cable, and neutral signature. They're also lightweight and comfortable. They do not sound as good as the sennheisers or Oppos, but since they are one of my 3 listening options, I don't mind. These are great for what I use them for. :)
   
   
4. Bowers and Wilkins P7 These come in wired and wireless variants, and are not only comfortable, but look quite good. If you have large ears, they may not fit very well, due to the square earpads, but they sound great, and are tuned to have a little more bass than some of the other selections.
   
   
   Edit: picks are in order of best >> worst choice. Also, the top 2 will definitely benefit a lot more from a dedicated amp.

Preferred Type of Headphone - Over-ear/ full sized

Preferred tonal balance - I prefer a more natural balance, maybe some emphasized bass and mids, but nothing crazy. Just some cans that are a pure joy to listen to.

Past headphones - Sennheiser earbuds (old, and not sure which model), Sony Gold Playstation headset

Preferred Music - A pretty wide range, mostly acoustic and alternative (Lewis Watson, Cody Fry, John Mayer). Classic rock (Queen) and more modern rock (Thirty Seconds to Mars, Pierce the Veil). Piano centered classical (Ludovico Einaudi). A bit of EDM/ Pop/ House music (DJ Snake, Kygo, Lauv). Some hip-hop/ rap (Run the Jewels)

What would you like to improve on from your set-up - For my next set I'm really looking for a pair of closed backs that are a joy to listen to for hours, with the best sound stage and positioning (I'd like to use these for gaming as well). I know that's difficult for closed backs obviously, but I have come up with some potential choices:

I would immediately add the H6 if they'd be $200. Unfortunately, the German price is somewhat unrepresentative of what the H6 costs.

The majority of visitors is from the US and therefore I am sticking to what the item costs on amazon.com

And at that price the H6 is not as good in terms of build, comfort and sound as similarly priced headphones (the ones you mentioned).

Bang & Olufsen H6. I dunno if it's any more expensive in Germany but it seems like it fits your needs. Closed cups, nice wide soundstage, kind of bass-heavy which is nice for that cinematic feel in shooters/movies/etc., and easy enough to drive that you don't need dedicated amp.

Plus they look pretty damn good.
