Get one of these bad boys. The dock is really only a small circuit board and not very hard to take apart at all.

u/UniquePebble · 68 pointsr/techsupportmacgyver

It’s being choked by the switch dock more than the dbrand skin. I gutted my dock and put it in a shell I bought from Amazon. Looks better, easier to travel with, and has an open back to the vents.

Here’s the Lunk https://www.amazon.com/dp/B071YVC3NJ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_c4lQCb1SKX4K9

Your dock has 3 or 4 different types of screws, all Phillips though. You’ll have to pretty much tear the whole thing apart.

u/whiskeytab · 19 pointsr/NintendoSwitch

Real talk: As someone who travelled a lot for work this year, the best solution for bringing the dock is to get one of the 3D printed shells and buy a 2nd official dock and transplant its contents in to it.

Unfortunately Nintendo still aren't taking portability seriously and don't offer a travel dock of their own so this is the only real option if you're looking to down-size the official dock (don't use 3rd party ones as they are known to fry your switch).

This is the one I use: https://www.amazon.ca/BASSTOP-Portable-Replacement-Nintendo-Original/dp/B071YVC3NJ/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1542135143&sr=8-2&keywords=basstop

Taking the parts out of the official dock and putting them in to this really isn't hard and this is the only SAFE way to have a proper portable dock.

u/marianodlt · 18 pointsr/NintendoSwitch

I believe THIS is what he talks about, but there's also 3D printable ones that are the same but maybe a little more rough.

Like THIS one or if the front part is what makes you nervous you could go THIS way

u/facudom · 14 pointsr/NintendoSwitchDeals

I actually bought one and changed the housing to this one

I usually move around with the switch, and having a portable dock is really convenient

u/largepanda · 10 pointsr/NintendoSwitchDeals

Very seriously: a lot of third-party docks have bricked peoples Switches. Nyko has just been sued over their dock bricking consoles, and /r/NintendoSwitch strongly recommends against using any docks other than the official Nintendo one.

If you want a different shape, you can get something like this, taking the internals out of an official dock and putting it in the smaller case.

u/TemptedTemplar · 9 pointsr/NintendoSwitch

No.

The official dock is the only 100% safe option.

Though there are smaller cases, that you can put the Nintendo dock chipsets into to make it more portable.

u/elichondo · 9 pointsr/NintendoSwitch

You could take your current dock apart and put it in one of these: https://www.amazon.com/BASSTOP-Portable-Replacement-Nintendo-Original/dp/B071YVC3NJ/

I too want to get a portable dock, but the Nintendo Dock and this case just make it too expensive to do, but thought I'd throw this out there for you.

I believe this is the only way to be 100% safe. It takes the internals of the original dock. There are plenty tutorials on how to do it on youtube.

u/koogums · 7 pointsr/NintendoSwitch

Check out the Basstop dock replacement. https://www.amazon.com/BASSTOP-Portable-Nintendo-Replacement-original/dp/B071YVC3NJ/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1520136415&sr=8-1&keywords=basstop+switch+dock

All you need to do is take apart your old dock and put the electronics inside their shell. Its super tiny and looks way better than the official dock.

u/mothmanex · 7 pointsr/Gaming4Gamers

If you want another dock, buy the original one and a small case for it on amazon.

Usually the issues with usb-c are thanks to the cable. If you want to play it safe, buy one that Benson Leung recommends.

I usually use my ZMI QB820 Power bank with a Veckle USB-C (Benson Leung gave it 4 stars, he decreased a star because when he reviewed it the cable was unbranded. Mine came branded.) with my docked switch without any issues.

So either buy anything related to USB-C from Nintendo, research what you want to buy (reviews, etc) or play it safe buying anything with a good review from Benson Leung.

u/itravelandwheel · 7 pointsr/Switch

I have the Nyko dock as well and the one time I tried to use it I had no picture. I did some research and found out about the potential damage they can cause and decided to never use it again.

I ended up buying a second official dock and installing it in this shell and it works perfectly. Plus it fits in my travel case so I can play easily in my hotel rooms.

u/seanmacproductions · 6 pointsr/NintendoSwitch

Your safest bet is getting this off amazon. Basically that's just a plastic shell, you take an official dock apart and place the board inside that. It's the most expensive way to do it (official docks are still like $90), but definitely the safest, since you're basically just using an official dock inside of a different plastic housing.

u/ily88242 · 6 pointsr/Switch

My spouse and I bought this dock shell that is designed for the motherboard from the OG switch dock to fit perfectly inside of it. So it would still use the OG Nintendo dock but is a MUCH more portable, and in our opinion, more convenient docking mechanism. And no risk of bricking. Win-win

u/fenrirofdarkness · 5 pointsr/NintendoSwitch

I actually got something like this instead.

Because it's all using the original dock, there shouldn't be any problem.

u/MDG5AL · 5 pointsr/NintendoSwitch

Check this guy out: https://www.amazon.com/BASSTOP-Portable-Replacement-Nintendo-Original/dp/B071YVC3NJ?th=1&psc=1

Edit - This is only a shell and you'll be switching the internals of your stock-dock, but it does minimize the size dramatically.

u/llibertybell965 · 4 pointsr/Switch

Generally anything third party that handles charging with the Switch is risky. Safest option is that there are kits to open the official dock and reshell it with a smaller form factor. Like this, https://www.amazon.com/dp/B071YVC3NJ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_04BcBb3VCFJT7

u/ApostleO · 4 pointsr/Switch

Exactly this, except it's by BASSTOP, not Hori.

u/UCLAKoolman · 3 pointsr/NintendoSwitch

$12.99 with prime shipping. It comes with all the tools you need to make the swap and there are YouTube tutorials online. Took less than thirty minutes to move everything over.

Haven't had any issues. I've used it on three two-week business trips now. When I'm home I use an official dock.

u/Akmantainman · 3 pointsr/NintendoSwitch

Consider purchasing this dock shell if you travel alot it's 100% worth it.

I travel 1-3 times a month for work here's my notes for Taking the switch...

Carry On

  1. Switch in Satisfye Grip Case (Highly reccomened if playing in portable mode alot) make sure you get the smaller case, the other one is huge.
  2. Metal Switch Stand, I like bring this because sometime I just down want to hold the thing during the flight or at the hotel
  3. Anker Power Bank and Cable
  4. Game Case. Alternatively, you can pack just a few in your case.

    Checked Bag
  5. Travel Dock
  6. HDMI Cabke
  7. Pro Controller
  8. Official Power Brick (maybe in carry in depending how long the flight is)

I also do alot of traveling to rural areas of Alaska so limited internet and very little to do most of the year. If I'm going anywhere for more than a 3 days I'll usually buy a new game or start over a game.
u/motorboat_mcgee · 3 pointsr/NintendoSwitch

I just went with this: BASSTOP Portable Nintendo Switch Dock Replacement Case ( Only the case, you have to DIY with the circuit board chip from the original dock ) (Black) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B071YVC3NJ?ref=yo_pop_ma_swf

u/augowl_ · 3 pointsr/NintendoSwitchDeals

There is a conversion (link) that you can take the innards from a Nintendo first party dock and fill in the shell. It's more expensive, but the only 100% safe route to a portable dock.

I still haven't seen any brick reports from the Insignia dock either, but I can't recommend any third party dock anymore since it could potentially be brickable by a future update.

u/wouldnotjointhedance · 3 pointsr/NintendoSwitch

I highly recommend the Basstop Replacement

I've been using it for a couple years. You do have to dismantle an actual first party dock but I never had any regrets. I did need to look up a video on taking the dock apart (their video linked in their instructions sucks) but it only took about 10 minutes and they shipped it with the needed tools.

u/SleepyTexan · 3 pointsr/NintendoSwitch

General consensus is don't bother, if you're willing to risk it the only thing I've seen on here and /r/NintendoSwitchDeals is gutting your current dock and adding it to here.

Again though, it's not recommended.

u/jrbless · 3 pointsr/Switch

If vertical clearance is your problem, I have a suggestion. Get a BASSTOP Portable Dock Shell and transplant the "guts" of the normal dock into this shell. Much easier to get the Switch in and out this way when you have space considerations.

Since this approach uses the normal hardware of an official dock, you don't need to worry about it being 3rd party for bricking-type issues.

u/Nayrm79 · 3 pointsr/NintendoSwitchDeals

Do not under any circumstances buy 3rd party Switch docks. Buy one of these if you want a travel dock.

BASSTOP Portable Dock Replacement Case for Nintendo Switch (Only The case, You Have to DIY with The Circuit Board chip from The Original Dock) (Black) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B071YVC3NJ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_ihc5CbWGMJX51

You have to transfer internals from your Nintendo dock to the basstop. But you'll save yourself a bricked Switch.

u/avilash · 3 pointsr/NintendoSwitch

Good luck. The currently state of things is that most people avoid any 3rd party docks like the plague since Nintendo didn't follow the USB 3.1 standard exactly, and because of this it was not an uncommon occurrence for a 3rd party dock to end up frying the Nintendo Switch.

Your best bet would be to get an official Nintendo Switch dock, disassemble to remove all plastic so that you have just the circuit board, and put that board into a more portable form factor. Something like: https://www.amazon.com/BASSTOP-Portable-Replacement-Nintendo-Original/dp/B071YVC3NJ/ref=asc_df_B071YVC3NJ

EDIT:I did purchase Best Buy's Isginia third party dock and use it regularly. It does the job. I've used it for about 5 months now and my Switch is still working. You do occasionally have to completely unplug the thing to reset it, as it will occasionally not recognize the Switch is being docked. But since it is primarily for portability, it likely will be unplugged often anyway.

u/longviewite · 3 pointsr/Switch

Stick with the dock and power cord that came with your switch. If you are at all handy, you can get a replacement shell that you can carefully remove the guts of the original and replace.

u/Lorben · 3 pointsr/NintendoSwitch

You can make your original dock into a travel dock.

There's kits on Amazon for that.

There's surprisingly little in an official dock so the parts easily fit in a smaller case.

u/Doedel51 · 3 pointsr/NintendoSwitch

If you want something more compact, there is this solution:

https://www.amazon.com/BASSTOP-Portable-Nintendo-Replacement-original/dp/B071YVC3NJ

You would have to buy this + an official Nintendo dock and then sort of build it yourself.

u/fictitiousacct · 3 pointsr/NintendoSwitch

Outside of having a dedicated switch bag, there's also the option of replacing the dock case. It uses the exact Nintendo components and just repackages it to something smaller. Of course, you'd need to be okay with opening your dock and removing the parts to do so.

u/Thanatos- · 3 pointsr/nintendo

I wanted an extra official Power cable anyways (~$25) so i got this and intend to convert it to a Portable Dock with one of these

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0759CH5Q3/

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B071YVC3NJ/

Feel much better gutting a dock if i have a backup already. Would hate to have to drop $70-90 just to get another dock if i screwed something up.

u/on8wingedangel · 2 pointsr/NintendoSwitchDeals

DON'T USE THIS, strong likelihood of bricking your Switch. Buy this instead and a spare first-party dock to transplant into it. I did it myself, it was pretty easy.

u/GaveUpMyGold · 2 pointsr/NintendoSwitch

This is the one I used. It's just a smaller housing for the circuit board in the Switch dock, about the size of a deck of cards.

https://www.amazon.com/d/B071YVC3NJ

u/MooKids · 2 pointsr/NintendoSwitch

If the dock still works, you could just buy a new aftermarket enclosure.

I just ordered this portable replacement case.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B071YVC3NJ/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

It is just a plastic shell, and it uses the Switch dock internals to function, so it really isn't a third party dock.

u/DapperDano · 2 pointsr/NintendoSwitch

What's the best portable dock shell? After hearing all the horror stories of 3rd party docks I'm just going to put the official one in a new shell. The main one I can find is this: https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B071YVC3NJ/ref=ask_ql_qh_dp_hza

u/SexlessNights · 2 pointsr/funny

Buy a smaller dock enclosure

u/Emuchu · 2 pointsr/NintendoSwitch

The official dock is "portable" in the sense that it's light and easy to move around, but it's also much larger than it needs to be and wouldn't fit into most Switch carry cases. The electronics component of the dock consists of a single board that's only about 2" x 2", so you can actually disassemble the official dock and stick all the guts into a smaller case such as this BASSTOP one on Amazon. This makes the dock small enough to stick into your pocket... or inside your switch case.

A dongle is another possible solution--and in fact they exist already, albeit in an unlicensed and may-brick-your-console kind of way, but the issue with both of these things is that Nintendo wants to cover the screen up while it's in docked mode. Personally, I went with the transplanted smaller dock, so that I could fit the Switch, dock, power adapter, and two extra Joycon into the same zippered Switch carry case.

u/superwiifan · 2 pointsr/NintendoSwitch

First off, if you plug your switch into a dock, the screen on the Switch itself will go black. What you would want to do to charge a switch in tabletop is to get a good stand that has a space for the charger to fit in, something like this: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01N9RTMWS/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_KBJSCb4AE5SKY

Second, if you DO want a portable dock, I’d recommend taking an official dock and putting it into a smaller shell, something like this: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B071YVC3NJ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_6CJSCbJRHEK9W
It’s a fairly straightforward and easy process - I don’t have much engineering know-how and it took me a half-hour max.

u/MattCz9 · 2 pointsr/NintendoSwitch

You can get a shell of sorts where you can take the internals of an official Switch and put them into this smaller dock. Likely going to have to buy a second dock if you don't want to take apart your original one so it might not be that cheap, but I personally think it's a better option than buying a cheap third party dock only to have it brick your Switch.

u/banjoman05 · 2 pointsr/NintendoSwitch

I bought a new dock shell kit from Amazon and swapped the original dock guts to it. All the benefits of a smaller third party dock with no chance of bricking because the dock hardware is original. The new dock is about the size of a pack of cards itself.

u/djfakey · 2 pointsr/NintendoSwitch

Sure. There are two where you transfer to get the tv output.

I received the TomToc Storage Case today and it’s great. I’m able to store my Switch, Joycon Grip, Power cable as well as the Nintendo Switch dock with it in the
Basstop Portable Dock Shell

You won’t be able to store an HDMI cable but that shouldn’t be an issue considering most people have a spare HDMI cable or a device that is already using one.

If you want to store a Switch Pro Controller the Butterfox Extra Large Case might be a better option however it won’t work as a stand.

u/RavioliSpills · 2 pointsr/Switch

Dang that sucks man :/ maybe you could get a different type of dock?

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B071YVC3NJ

This thing seems pretty rad, you do have to do a bit of fiddling with the old dock to get it to work.

This video explains it: https://youtu.be/UL7zXpJGl1s

u/erwan · 2 pointsr/nintendo

The only surefire solution for now is to buy an official dock, and put its guts in a small case like this one:

It's pricey, but the only way to get a travel dock without risking a brick.

I'm hoping it will work, and they didn't specifically disable docking functionality

u/P0rtableAnswers · 2 pointsr/NintendoSwitch

You may want to be careful and do some research first. Rumors exist that the official Nintendo Dock is currently the only safe dock. Other alternatives are apparently bricking people's Switch consoles, even the Nyko one. I understand cost is always a factor but perhaps consider buying an official Nintendo Dock and swapping the guts into one of these. All together it's about $100 but there could also be upcoming deals for Black Friday and Cyber Monday. Also remember, the Switch can be replaced but, as of right now.

u/MoogleMan3 · 2 pointsr/NintendoSwitch

Basstop dock shell

You use the pcb from the oem dock and install it in the basstop shell and you have a portable dock that's as good as oem.

u/Bambambm · 1 pointr/NintendoSwitch

I'm in a similar situation as you. Using the normal dock, I don't have enough room on the shelf below my tv to put in and take out my switch. I ended up keeping it on the floor until I got a 3rd party dock shell. You have to take the chip out of the normal one and screw into the hollow shell. It makes it very easy to take in and out. And doesn't cause some of the bricking of the system like other 3rd party docks do.

u/Dissidence802 · 1 pointr/NintendoSwitch

I have the Basstop replacement dock and it's perfect. You do have to transplant the guts from the official dock, but it's a super simple process.

u/fahsky · 1 pointr/NintendoSwitchDeals

I reshelled my dock into the BASSTOP Shell for $13, & it takes up half the space under the Switch in the Skull&Co case. I can fit a set of Joy Cons or my skinny Hori game case next to it. However, I can't get my Switch to dock in it with the Skull&Co case on it, only 'naked', although the TV detects it as an input, it just shows a black screen. I never tried docking it in the original dock with the case on it. Also, it doesn't include a spot for the green LED, but I just stuck it in the back air vent. Overall, a very solid travel dock!

u/rhythmrice · 1 pointr/NintendoSwitch

When you open the flap on the back of your dock to plug the hdmi cord in, you can tell the circuit board in the switch dock is tinyy, like half the size of your phone and probably about 2 phones thick. You can open your dock and take that board out and put it in a tiny case you can buy online that makes it so you have a mini dock you can fit in you ln bag easily. I 3d printed my own case with my name on it

Heres a tutorial

https://youtu.be/DNQmafYYCqg

u/-BreakingPoint0 · 1 pointr/NintendoSwitch

The only recommended dock is the official one. All others have shown to brick Switch's, so why take the risk?

That being said, there is a replacement dock casing that might work:

https://www.amazon.com/BASSTOP-Portable-Nintendo-Replacement-original/dp/B071YVC3NJ/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1521086805&sr=8-3

These are safe because they use the innards of the official dock. One caveat is that this is just a case, it requires the innards of the official dock and does not come with the innards. It's apparently very easy to switch them out, but it does require some manual work.

u/TheRealKuni · 1 pointr/NintendoSwitch

Consider something like this. You have to take the circuit board and ports out of the official dock and put them in there, but it's pretty easy to do and won't brick your system. Much easier to carry around.

u/coreykill99 · 1 pointr/NintendoSwitch

I picked this one up. As for how easy, I didn't find it complex just finnicky. And my wanting the green power led to have a home in the shell when there isn't a space for it lead it to take a while longer than it should have I'm sure. But if you are technically minded at all and competent to be patient and watch a tutorial on YouTube it's not bad.

https://www.amazon.com/BASSTOP-Portable-Replacement-Nintendo-Original/dp/B071YVC3NJ/ref=sr_1_3?keywords=switch+dock+shell&qid=1571068292&sr=8-3

u/Gawlf85 · 1 pointr/NintendoSwitch

Unfortunately there's no cheap solution, other than just moving your dock around.

Third party docks exist, but they're known to damage the console sometimes, so I wouldn't recommend them.

There are also replacement cases for the Dock. These are just plastic encasings and you need to disassemble the original Dock and move the electronics to the new case, and the result is a smaller, more portable version of the official Dock. Which might be preferable if you're gonna move your Dock often from one room to another, but I guess you could end up breaking something and end up with no Dock at all :P

u/bulbousnub · 1 pointr/NintendoSwitch

About half and half. I removed the electronics from an official Nintendo dock and put them into a 3rd party shell.

u/GuerrillaApe · 1 pointr/NintendoSwitch

Any recommendations for the portable dock cases that I can transfer the OG dock components into? I'm thinking of getting the one made by BASSTOP simply because it was the first result on Amazon.

u/22sNchcarg · 1 pointr/minimalism

Sorry for the late reply, but I don't recommend getting a third-party Switch dock as they could break your system. If you really need a small dock for traveling, I recommend getting some replacement dock shells like these. They take some work to put together but it's a way safer option.

For the case, if you want to store the charger then you might want to find a thicker one because the charger is really thick and you risk breaking your screen or joycon because of pressure.

and for organizational purposes I recommende these or similar. Each bag contains:

  1. Toiletries (toothbrush, paste, floss, nail clipper, tweezers, etc)
  2. Trimmer and accesories
  3. Chromecast and macbook charger extension cable
  4. Powerbank and all type of usb cables (I use this in my daycarry as well)

Nope, the Switch doesn’t use a standard USB-C compliant connection and needs specially made docks.

The consensus is that you shouldn’t use 3rd party docks because they can brick your Switch.

However, if you do want a cheaper and more portable alternative and don’t care for the risk, the Insignia and Jumpgate docks have been safe so far. Your safest method is taking apart the official dock and transferring the internal to a shell

u/kainoah · 1 pointr/NintendoSwitch

No soldering just screws. I believe this is what they were referring to. It's better than a 3rd party dock with their own chip in it cause those have been known to brick your switch.

u/Elroxil · 1 pointr/smashbros

Dont use 3rd party docks. It will possibly brick your system

If you want to do something else you can always put the dock internals into something like this

BASSTOP Portable Dock Replacement Case for Nintendo Switch (Only The case, You Have to DIY with The Circuit Board chip from The Original Dock) (Black) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B071YVC3NJ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_9YV.Bb49B1JVX

(you gut out a dock and place the board in here)

I would use that and a USB hub if u REALLY want to avoid having a dock.

What about this? BASSTOP Portable Nintendo Switch Dock Replacement Case, Black ( Only the case, you have to DIY with the circuit board chip from the original dock ) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B071YVC3NJ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_lU4ozbNPH34YX

I just expect better design from a company as big as Nintendo. Especially when I see 3rd party DIY docks that look like This. Now that imo has a much more practical design that won't scratch the switch and honestly just looks prettier and more professional than the shit they gave us. I would gladly pay the 60 if the original looked anything like that.

u/CripplerJones · 1 pointr/NintendoSwitch

If you're talking about one of those DIY replacement shells -- assuming you don't break something -- it should work just as it did with the OEM shell. All you're doing is moving the circuitboard from the OEM dock to a new chassis, so that won't affect functionality.

u/OckhamsFolly · 1 pointr/NintendoSwitch

Those are the dimensions from a popular dock replacement shell, one from Basstop (checking with the link I'm about to post, it's actually 4x2.8x1.3). They design it with the USB-C port recessed in front and then it angles back slightly so the Switch's weight is balanced.

I bought something similar to this a while back. You transfer the guts from your factory dock (not that hard) so there is no risk of shitty third party electronics frying your USB port or anything like that.

u/Teajaytea7 · 1 pointr/NintendoSwitch

In regards to this Nyko dock case thing, how easy is it to DIY? Where do I get the electronics for it? It's something I'd love to do but have literally zero idea how to do it.

Is there a guide or something I can check out?

u/TheDarkHorse · 1 pointr/Switch

I was still hesitant about 3rd party docks or dongles, so i went with this instead: https://www.amazon.com/BASSTOP-Portable-Replacement-Nintendo-Original/dp/B071YVC3NJ/ref=lp_15069350011_1_5?srs=15069350011&ie=UTF8&qid=1536257047&sr=8-5

It's just a plastic shell though, you need to take out the components of original dock and set them in it. That said, it's a 10-15 min project at most and I've had zero problems with it.

u/cultsuperstar · 1 pointr/gaming

Here you go. You gotta transfer the dock board over though.

Just to clarify you have these products?

https://www.amazon.com/BASSTOP-Portable-Nintendo-Replacement-original/dp/B071YVC3NJ/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1522916940&sr=8-3&keywords=basstop+nintendo+switch

If these are correct, you're saying that with the Skull and Co. Gripcase you can not dock on the Basstop Dock so you bought the FYOUNG extension? Is that what you're saying or am I off?

Also, if that is what you were implying, does the Basstop dock and the FYOUNG extension fit in the carrying case from Skull and Co. along with everything else?

Anyone know where to buy the mini dock shell?

Edit: Found it on Amazon. Think it's this one?

u/_softlite · 1 pointr/NintendoSwitch

I use my laptop as a mobile display via an el gato hd60s. Much cheaper than a portable display, and not much smaller (my laptop is 15"). As long as you can plug the dock into a power outlet on the plane, and assuming you have a laptop, perhaps this would be the best option. Obviously packing a dock is a hassle, but there are portable docks (though some, if not all, have a chance of bricking your device). I would recommend modding your dock to the portable housing I've linked below, as it will not harm your device. It's a fairly easy procedure, as you can see in the video on the Amazon page.

I just traveled from the US to Japan and this was my intended setup. Unfortunately, my 12 hour trans-Pacific flight didn't have power this time, although I have had previous flights with AC outlets on that route.

There is a Switch Dock Shell that you can buy at Amazon.

https://www.amazon.com/BASSTOP-Portable-Replacement-Nintendo-Original/dp/B071YVC3NJ

You have to tear down (or break apart) a regular dock and get the chip in it. Then you place it inside the Shell. After doing so, you have yourself a safe and portable dock. :)

u/BrokenBehindBluEyez · 1 pointr/NintendoSwitch

I've done several for myself and friends, but I highly recommend the shells that hold the official guts.

I've done these mostly:

https://www.amazon.com/BASSTOP-Portable-Replacement-Nintendo-Original/dp/B071YVC3NJ

You take an official dock, and take it apart and put it inside this new, smaller, shell.

I know it's not a "cheap" option, but if you catch it right, official docks were on sale/clearance at Gamestop a while back and you can probably find some deals on some used ones as well.

u/Tenograd · 1 pointr/NintendoSwitch

I can't help you with the power supply question. But for your dock: if money isn't an issue the best option is to buy another nintendo official dock and to built it into a portable case yourself.

https://www.amazon.com/BASSTOP-Portable-Nintendo-Replacement-original/dp/B071YVC3NJ/

The most expensive but still securest portable dock option.

u/MetaByte7 · 1 pointr/NintendoSwitch

I really don't think it'll work. I looked up the comment you were referring to, then I looked at his profile and he just has a bunch of 5 star reviews for the most random shit, all done very recently.

I remember reading about some empty dock you could buy, but it didnt have any actual components in it. You'd have to dissect your actual nintendo dock (should be very easy to do) and then put it into the empty dock, which was more portable, kind of like this

https://www.amazon.com/BASSTOP-Portable-Nintendo-Replacement-original/dp/B071YVC3NJ/ref=pd_sbs_63_1?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=46ME6ENCAMBTY179PCHE

And since its the official nintendo hardware you're using, you shouldn't have any chances of bricking your switch like with the Nyko one.

u/Climax0 · 1 pointr/NintendoSwitch

1 - Eh just get a screen protector anyway. There's no reason to leave your screen vulnerable in the first place. If you do want absolutely zero risk whenever docking your Switch you could always buy something like this replacement shell and put your dock inside of that.

2 - This is a weird one. My Switch is perfectly fine when it comes to my internet connection, I can roam around my house and still find myself with 3-2 bars (This was the case for both 2.4 & 5GHz for me). However I've heard about some still not getting a clear connection even when in the same room/next to their router. It is an actual issue no doubt, but I don't believe its a problem with *every* Switch hence why its sorta weird.

3 - As far as I know there's no actual proof/evidence that the heat from the Switch is deforming the shell. The Switch doesn't even get hot enough when docked to do that to plastic.

4 - Only was an actual issue at launch, which was then quickly fixed.

5 - The straps come off easily no matter how you put them in. I'm pretty the only reason people "couldn't get them off" is because they accidentally push the white lock switch in while trying to put them on/take them off. Never even an issue in the first place honestly.

6 - Actual issue. It's due to the designs of the Joy-con sticks and as far as I'm aware is essentially inevitable depending on how much use your Joy-cons get. The internals of the newer Joy-cons don't suggest that's physically revamped anything against this problem, it's also too early to tell if they've been fixed despite that.

I would say the only big issue is 6 along with possibly 2 and maybe 1/3 (but don't put too much thought about them). 4 is irrelevant and 5 was more of a misconception than an actual design problem.

u/kkundlas786 · 1 pointr/NintendoSwitch

The best option is generally agreed to be to just gut your original Dock and put its components into a shell. About as small as a pair of Joy Cons side by side, still gives you access to all the ports, surprisingly easy to get done with the right instructions, and removes the risk and annoyance of scratching and overheating with the original dock. Also, and this is just a personal thing, I like the far better customization options with it and the fact it displays my Switch a lot more prominently. Sure you lose the signature look, but I think it better represents just what the Switch really is and the power of the tablet itself. Bottom link is the one I used since July and I haven't regretted it since. Top one offers more air flow and probably is worth the extra 2 bucks.

While I don't own any of these personally, one big con is that some third party docks may kill your Switch over the USB-C port. Choose wisely when buying one, buy an official dock, or buy an official one and take the circuit board to put into a dock shell like this one.

I replaced my dock with this because the stock dock sucks.
