Sometimes, the performance makes a big difference with Beethoven's music. These are some exceptionally good performances from my collection:
Beethoven: Symphonies 4 & 5 by Christopher Hogwood and the Academy of Ancient Music.
Beethoven: Piano Sonatas No. 8, Pathétique/ No. 14, Moonlight/ No. 21, Waldstein/ No. 23, Appassionata by Wilhelm Kempff. The real standout here is the Moonlight Sonata. Kempff gets this one right. I have the full set of Sonatas by Jeno Jando, but I prefer Kempff for this one.
Beethoven: Symphony No 9 arranged for piano by Wagner by Noriko Ogawa. This is Richard Wagner's transcription of Beethoven's 9th symphony for piano, soloists and choir.
In choosing which performers to get for a complete set of the string quartets, I chose the Lindsays, and for a complete set of the symphonies, I chose the Hanover Band. There may be other good choices. I got these through emusic, which had a limited selection of artists back when they were selling MP3s for much lower prices than the competition.
