If you're going for a 3.0 you'll need an AVR. That will eat half of the budget straight away and will narrow down the speaker choices. Lets take a look at an setup for you.

AVR - You need this to power the speakers.

  • Sony STRDH590 $180 - Entry level AVR that is very budget friendly. For a simple 3.0 this guy should do fine.

Speakers - Since you're going for a 3.0 (no sub) you'll want some speakers that go pretty low especially if you're using this in an HT roll.

  • BIC DV62 $120 + DV62CLRS $100 - These are pretty big so make sure you have space for them. However, you will get a decent low end.
  • Pioneer BS-22 $120 + Center $100 - These are a favorite entry level speaker. They are smaller than the BIC's but are still a decent sized speaker.
  • Micca OoO $100 + Center $60 - These are new and I haven't heard them. However, they seem small but are said to deliver decent bass. I happen to like the CLR setup with the d'appololito design.
  • Micca RB42 $150 + Center $100 - These are small but give great low end. However, they are hard to drive so these are not for a large room or high volumes if you like to crank it up. However, if you're not wanting a sub and you have to get small speakers these are an option. Yes this will push the budget a bit too.

You will also need some speaker wire and should consider some stands for the mains to sit on. However, you can get those at a later date.

I'm a huge fan of the BICs, and especially love their matching center channel. You could get the speakers and center with your budget.

If you're set on the receiver, a pair of Bic DV84 for $140 each or a pair of Polk Monitor 60s for $160 each. Bic DV62CLRS center for $100 and DV62si for the rear at $110 for the pair. Bic F12 sub for $185. Maybe a pair of Fluance bookshelves for $180 a pair, and Bipolar for the for $200 for the rear, then find a center, hard to beat the bic for the price as far as a sub though. The Bic 84s, and Monitor 60s stand up pretty well to heavy bass, the F12 will add the necessary kick in the balls.

Not sure why you x-posted this to audiophile, with that budget the only way will get audiophile grade is if you can find the score of the century on craigslist.

Thanks again for the advice. What do you think of this setup? It's only about $50 more but it seems like a lot of people are recommending BIC in this sub.

If you plan on ordering from amazon and don't need your setup right away, check out the price history on the speakers at camelcamelcamel.com. a few time per year they sell at about $70 per pair rather than ~125. Also, my local best buy has those speakers on display, so you might be able to check them out there.

Also check out this center speaker (http://www.amazon.com/BIC-America-DV-62CLRS-Channel-Speaker/dp/B00009WBYL/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1419740965&sr=8-1&keywords=BIC+america+center). I saw good reviews for it.
