Look for a Blackmagic mini recorder. It will convert HDMI to Thunderbolt.

https://www.amazon.com/Blackmagic-Design-UltraStudio-Mini-Recorder/dp/B009D91314

You will need thunderbolt and not mini display port.

You’ll also need to purchase a thunderbolt cable.

I went down a deep Nikon rabbit hole asking this same question and here's where I landed:

First: the camera will shut off every 30 minutes like /u/bgpawesome said. This is sort of a sensor issue but it's equally (if not more) a tax issue. I found one workaround for using your Nikon longer than 30 minutes and it comes down to recording. I have a D5600 so I'm not sure if all of this will transfer to the D5300 but if you start recording on your Nikon then stop it it resets the shut off timer. I bought a cheap remote shutter release cord and in the settings changed the remote settings from "release shutter" to "record video". It works but sometimes it tries to focus so you might want to set it to manual focus.

Second: The Elgtao is incredibly limiting on Mac. You have to use Elgato's software and I found it lacking so I went with the Black Magic Ultra Studio Mini Recorder. In fact, I bought two (one for my DSLR/GoPro and one for my Xbox One or a second camera). Now I can use OBS which I found way more customizable than Elgato.

Third: To be perfectly honest, after a month of research and trial and error, I use a Logictech c920 for my "main" camera. If I'm doing a music performance or something that I want to look nicer I use the Nikon but for every day streaming the c920 has been more than adequate.

Hope this helps. Happy to answer anymore questions if you have them.

  • You should try to locate a Sennheiser receiver that works with your transmitter. The transmitter operates in a certain frequency range (A Band, G Band, etc) and you'll need a cooresponding receiver (like this).
  • You need is a USB audio interface to get audio from your microphone into the laptop (like this)
  • Connect the receiver to the USB interface with an XLR or TRS cable (mic or line level) (like this or this)
  • Set the gain appropriately on the input of the USB interface so that it doesn't indicate overload when speaking loudly into the microphone
  • Add the USB audio device to OBS in this menu
  • Make sure the OBS meter shows a good level when speaking into the mic

    [Edit]

    As far as video:

You mention using your Nikon camera. Have you tested this setup? The reason I ask is that in order to get HD video from an external camera, you'll need a thunderbolt or usb3.0 video capture device (like this). You may be able to get a low-framerate SD preview image from the camera via USB, but that's not going to look great...

No problem! I think you'll be happy with it. After a lot of reserach I decided that's the most economical solution if you have a Windows machine with USB.

If you have Mac/thunderbolt, it would still work great, but I'd also consider The Blackmagic capture card. Not very useful if you don't have Thunderbolt, though, which is why I went with the other one.

This product will let you input your hdmi camera to thunderbolt 2.

It’s not a extreme performance product (it’s like the into level) so having 3 of these run at the same time will probably slow the computer down a bit unless you’ve got a higher end processor.

u/firefly416 · 2 pointsr/mac

Target Display Mode was only available with the iMac.

> To my understanding the HDMI port on the computer is output only but that with the proper adapter it is possible.

This is correct.

> Is there a program that I could run on the computer to have it accept a video input through thunderbolt using a cable like this

No, that will not work. Thunderbolt working for displays only works as output. The only way to input HDMI into a Mac (or any computer) it needs an HDMI input device. Simply connecting a cable will not work. That cable you linked to is only to connect a Thunderbolt/MiniDisplayPort in a computer to a HDMI TV/monitor.

EDIT: This is the device I own and is cheaper than the device you linked to. https://www.amazon.com/Blackmagic-Design-UltraStudio-Mini-Recorder/dp/B009D91314/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1482343617&sr=8-1&keywords=blackmagic+mini+recorder

You need a capture card. If you have a Mac, then you probably have Thunderbolt ports, so I recommend the $137.75 Blackmagic Ultra Studio Mini Recorder. With the drivers installed, OBS (and any other software that can see video devices) will recognize an SDI or HDMI source plugged into it, although not both at the same time.

Beware though, not all DSLRs have what's called "clean" HDMI output. Clean HDMI output will be a full-sized image with no on-screen displays. DSLRs were never meant to be used as video cameras, so some of them have things like battery, shutter and iris values on the HDMI output.

>After doing some reading, it looks like I'm losing a lot of quality by doing it this way (is that correct?)

Yup, you're going two generations of lossy processing, and will incur generation loss as a consequence.

>My new idea is to use the HDMI out from my VHS/DVD combo unit into a BlackMagic UltraStudio Mini, and plug that into my computer. As I understand it, that will give me a high-quality digital copy of my home movies.

It all depends on how you capture the footage. If you capture it to a video format that is too highly compressed it'll still look like garbage. And you're going to have to look out at capture resolution (a low-quality upscaler in the DVD/VHS combo may not make video look as good at 720p or beyond compared to other upscaling solutinos) and interlacing (VHS is interlaced, computer video is progressive). So you need to be careful about how you handle that.

>I believe that using the combo unit's HDMI out will solve any issues I may have with time correcting; does that sound right?

You should be fine, assuming you handle everything else right.

I am in a similar boat. Have been tinkering with Gameshow as the software but trying to figure out a capture solution for my console. Found this as a as a potential external capture device but haven't plunked down the money yet.

You will need two things: A Blackmagic Studio Mini and an HDMI splitter that drops the stupid HDCP crap. Links:

You will also need the cabling (obviously) but the Blackmagic software is free and pretty decent. Once you have the thing connected to your computer, you should be seeing everything from the DVR, so just play the file. You can only record in realtime AND you will likely have to re-sync the audio to the video b/c at least in my case there is about a 1/2 to 3/4 second delay on the video stream but recording everything into one huge file allows you to resync just once and then you can edit everything to what you want.

AFAIK, this card from Magewell is the only option available for dual hdmi.

Osprey makes more affordable cards, but they only offer SDI instead of HDMI.

If you have access to Thunderbolt ports, than it might be possible to run two Blackmagic Minirecorders, or possibly any usb capture cards? I've been curious as to how multiple cards on one PC works.

u/greenysmac · 1 pointr/VideoEditing

I don't think so. That will upscale video. The T-Bolt adapters don't take HMDI (or anything) as an input.

You'd get that and a mini-recorder from BMD

Black magic Design UltraStudio Mini Recorder - $137.75

Plus an HDMI to mini-HDMI cable

You can pretty much get any camera with clean HDMI out and use that. If you find something with HDMI to HDMI you can bypass the UltraStudio

The setup I'm building for a client of ours will be using two GoPro Hero 5's plus a Panasonic LUMIX GH4 and feeding it into Wirecast. They're not streaming gaming though...I'll be sure to share it once we get their show up and running :)

u/DrewChrist87 · 1 pointr/mac

I thought about that, but I don't think it works with my workflow.

I'm looking to use two of these HDMI/SDI to Thunderbolt interfaces with my Mac Mini. But I also have to use the HDMI on the Mac to use for my display. The issue is I think I also need an additional port to output the Program output of this video live switching software.

Is is a Mac Pro new kind or older model?

I use Scopebox by Divergent Media(http://www.divergentmedia.com/scopebox) with BMD Mini Recorder(https://www.amazon.com/Blackmagic-Design-UltraStudio-Mini-Recorder/dp/B009D91314). Love the fact that i can customize & adjust scope size as well as record the feed to my laptop/computer.

I forgot to mention you'll also need this: http://www.amazon.com/Blackmagic-Design-UltraStudio-Mini-Recorder/dp/B009D91314

To convert to a more proper rec709 in the monitor.
