Can't fix the wear, but you can replace them. A frequently recommended pair of pads is the Brainwavz Angled memory foam earpads which are $35-40 CAD. They attach the same way stock pads do, via a flap on the back side. These are significantly more comfortable, as I use them on my m40x, which have a similar build.

Yeah I was a kid in a candy store.

I'd recommend the M40x + These Pads any day of the week.

I also owned Porta Pro's for awhile, they are the king of budget cans in my opinion if you're fine with semi open. The warranty is fantastic, you mail them in along with $9 and they mail back a new pair usually. I didn't for mine because I was in the middle of a cross country move when they broke, but I'm on the verge of buying a new pair!

I did a bunch of research after my old HA-RX700's finally broke and I wanted to get a pair of decent headphones, so hopefully I can save somebody a little time. (I couldn't wait anymore so I bought these from Audio-Technica's website for ~$85 ~a week ago. Promo code: gg2015 for 15% off). I narrowed it down to these and the Beyerdynamic dt770 pro 80 ohm, but chose the M40x's due to the lower price and portability.

These are on the list of preferred headphones <$100 over at r/headphones.
Sound quality is very good (no amp yet, just plugged into MB).
Build quality feels solid (hooray detachable cable, 2 included!). Screws rather than molding on metal, so replaceable parts.
The frequency response is relatively flat and pretty comparable to the M50X (for a bit lower price).
Comfort with original pads leaves something to be desired, but the ZMF cowhide pads are highly recommended on multiple forums. From what I've read, the angled Brainwavz HM5 are also a solid choice. (if you can wait a little while, camel tells me the price goes down to $22.50 somewhat regularly). There are also memory foam pads but apparently these alter the sound a bit and seem to be less popular.
Personally, I took the pads off and removed the foam insert, then put the pads back on. This made a little more room for my ears and improved comfort 10x. It probably changes the frequency response a little but for me, it's worth it until I can get some more comfortable pads. Before doing that, I could only wear them for 2-3 hours. Now I can leave them on for 4+ without issue.
Let me know if you have any questions about the headphones, haven't had them long but definitely enjoying them :)

These have turned my 681 EVO's into the most comfortable headphones I've ever put on my head. Sure they're as expensive as the headphones themselves, but if you plan on using these for hours at a time as your main headphones the upgrade is well worth it. If you think they're already pretty comfy, wait till you try them with these pads. It's the "no ear contact" of HD800's combined with the "ultra-soft cushioning" strategy of higher-end Sony cans.

The only issue is they're a real bitch to put on. It took me literally 3 hours of trial and error first time I did it. The trick is to get one edge into the groove and then stretch it over little by little using both hands on either side of the cup. Just make sure you put them on with the thick part at the back, so you don't have to go through the process again to correct it.

Oh yeah, also remember to remove the thicker foam that's inside the cups. Makes the sound less muffled.

buy m40x , recommend you get them refurbished for 75$ and buy these ear pads so they are comfortable
