Not running specific but you may want to check out Brave Not Perfect. I think the author may also have a TED Talk. I’m not a fan of self help books like this but the women I know who’ve read it felt it really resonated.
It basically talks about how boys are raised and socialized to try their best and not really worry about failure (be “Brave” - go for it, give it your best shot, etc.) where girls are raised to “be perfect” - don’t get your dress dirty, be careful, etc. and how this results in very different relationships to risk and fear of failure as they grow up. What you described anecdotally is exactly in line with what she discusses.
