Hey /r/watches person here. Can I recommend you not choose that watch? It's a Chinese POS, you can do better. I'm going to assume you want to go quartz, which is fine if you aren't a watch fanatic. Here are some similar and more respectable choices I quickly found:
http://www.amazon.com/Bulova-98H51-Strap-Calendar-Watch/dp/B000WUKJ0O/ref=sr_1_5?s=watches&ie=UTF8&qid=1335572717&sr=1-5

http://www.amazon.com/Seiko-Mens-SGEE97-Strap-Watch/dp/B003YCT750/ref=sr_1_5?s=watches&ie=UTF8&qid=1335572858&sr=1-5
http://www.amazon.com/Timex-Mens-Reader-Watch-T2N088/dp/B004X3ZDWU/ref=sr_1_9?s=watches&ie=UTF8&qid=1335572893&sr=1-9
Slim, classy, love this one
edit: damn it you got me sucked back into looking at watches, so then there is this, this but switch the band to something nicer, and this if you are willing to hold back your bar tab for another week
But that's exactly why people will try to talk you out of it. There are similarly designed watches for about half the price, with better build and pedigree.
One example is this Bulova
This is a pretty solid watch and has gotten me a lot of compliments. Just a tad over your max, but I highly recommend it.
Nice! Funny how everything can change on a Tuesday. Feels good to shop for something knowing what's good and what's not. Sounds like you already know the default minimalist suggestions, so I'll add some of my own:
-Any of the Citizen AU1080's - 38mm, scratch-resistant sapphire crystal, solar powered Eco-Drive. I like these better than the Tissot Everytime IMO.
-The Bulova 96B104 which also comes in gold - 37mm quartz, mineral crystal.
-Seiko SUP873 - 38mm, hardlex crystal (Seiko's version of a sort of hardened mineral, somewhere between mineral and sapphire), thin solar powered quartz from Seiko. More polished than what the Amazon picture shows.
-You said you were interested in the Stowa Antea (a gorgeous piece) which is a classic example of the Bauhaus design. For something very similar, the Tisell Bauhaus. It also comes in a nifty black version. Tisell is a South Korean seller which is run by one watchmaker as far as I know known as Mr. Oh. I've heard nothing but good things about him. These are Miyota automatics with sapphire crystals and are 38mm. Something to look into If you're feeling the need for something to tide you over until you can get your hands on a sweet, sweet Stowa.
The Bauhaus style watches appear to wear very big even if their measurements aren't physically big. Take the Braithwait for example - they are 40mm but check out the dial, it stretches across almost the entire 40mm width, with hardly any bezel, and minimal detail on an otherwise spartan dial. That is going to appear very big on the wrist.
My tip is, when looking at these styles, try to keep it back closer towards the 37mm mark if that is what he is used to wearing.
Check out this one as an example. I have recommended it elsewhere as a good budget minimalist watch but by a happy coincidence it works out to be that perfect size. 98H51 is similar version with a two-tone case and a bit of detail on the dial.
I just bought this Bulova watch the other day. Hopefully it's the look you're going for and at $85 its within your price range.
Here is a nice looking Orient that is pretty close to your range. If not you don't mind buying a quartz this Bulova is also a nice dressy watch.

You're basically looking for a dress watch from the looks of it. I set some filters and tried to find you a watch under $150. Also threw some expedition watches into the mix. I hope you don't mind that most of them are from Bulova. Their dress watches look pretty great.
I really really like my Bulova. It was 95$ on amazon and it was totally worth it!

Check out Orient Bambino, Bulova, Brathwait, or Skagen
At $200 you are probably better off focusing on the Seiko, Orient, Bulova, Citizen or the Sea Gull / Rodina's.
Rodina
Sea Gull
Bulova Dress
If you want a more contemporary one look at the Swatch Sistem51.
It's definitely not a Skagen. On the cheaper end of watches, it resembles a Daniel Wellington or a Bulova quartz a bit more.
I don't think it's either of those brands either, but they offer a case and spring bar setup more similar to the video watch than the Skagen does.
Fairly Cheap - day to day wear
new Orient Bambino
old Orient Bambino with black face
Bulova quartz
2in diameter is about 50mm so anything smaller than 40mm should be ok on you.

http://www.amazon.com/Bulova-97B100-Strap-White-Watch/dp/B002LUEI9Q/ref=pd_sbs_watch_1
there are tons of watches on amazon that matches that. you just got to spend some effort to look for it.
i also have this http://www.amazon.com/Seiko-SNK807K2-Automatic-Cloth-Weave/dp/B000HGDWXE/ref=sr_1_3?s=watches&ie=UTF8&qid=1320790131&sr=1-3 but it's more casual and i dont think it would look good in brown
I think the Orient Bambino would be a good pick (it's also available in a silver finish but black band so you'd have to change that yourself), more interesting than a sea of similar Bulova, Citizen, and Seiko quartz dress watches.
This Seiko Chronograph might be nice also but busier. And coming in well below budget is the Timex Forty Weekender.
Check out Bulova
Rose gold w/ textured dial
At 37mm it's actually smaller than the Meller one.
Timex Fairfield 37mm
This is the best watch under $100 if you hate divers as much as me.
Try these Bulovas.
Those are real cheap for watches... I don't see a lot of cheap gold dress watches around, especially with NATO straps (since dress watches with a NATO strap make no sense whatsoever). You might find a silver or steel Skagen for cheaper and can replace the strap with a NATO, but you shouldn't. I say if you really want that look, buy this watch. But if you insist on cheap...

These is the style you want (just uglier and with numerals) and you can change the strap. Search gold watch leather strap on amazon for more.

This is probably what you want, to be honest. Unfortunately it has that silver along the sides but it'll probably do.
This Tissot. $237
This Bulova. $100
This Orient. $140
This Tisell. $145
This Tisell. $155
Hope this helps!
Classic design.
As a couple of others have mentioned, you should be fine with something around 38mm. And since it seems you're just learning about the differences between automatic and manual, I would suggest reading a bit about them in the FAQ. The main pro of an automatic/mechanical watch is that it's WAY more interesting than a quartz. An automatic watch is a small combination of art and engineering that you wear on your wrist. A quartz, on the other hand, has the advantage of being substantially more accurate and typically coming at a much lower cost. Think about what makes more sense to you.
Based on the watches you've linked, some popular options to consider within your price rage are a Rodina (automatic) or a Bulova (quartz).
Generally when you've got something that tickles your fancy, getting an imitation is a bad idea-- you'll just be reminded of what you REALLY want every time you look at it... and then likely buy it down the line, increasing the money spent on watches + making the old one redundant.
But that said, I can understand not wanting to apply financial pressure to your lady. This, with its present discount, is probably your best bet. Other color/strap combinations can be found too
I have a similar model:
http://www.amazon.com/Bulova-98H51-Strap-Calendar-Watch/dp/B000WUKJ0O/ref=pd_sbs_watch_1
And it's extremely versatile, and I put a new plain brown leather strap on it and have gotten a lot of compliments on it. Also, the brown + gold lends itself well to a dressed up outfit or jeans and a button up.
The black + silver is also a good colour combo and I think the best feature of this watch is the size of it's face and its simplicity. Also, it's a good watch if you have thin wrists, like I do.
Bulova seems to have some watches that might fit the bill
Citizen Stiletto?
It has a sort of classic look, is very thin, and minimalist.
Perhaps something in a Seiko?
I should mention that of those choices, the Seiko is probably the best bang for the buck. It has a sapphire crystal, and the Kinetic movement. That being said, it is the thickest of those three.
This is what I recommended to a buddy in a similar situation:
http://www.amazon.com/Bulova-98H51-Leather-Dress-Watch/dp/B000WUKJ0O/ref=sr_1_4?s=apparel&ie=UTF8&qid=1407271926&sr=1-4&keywords=bulova
or

DW is a very "cheap" brand. It markets more than it prioritizes its quality. Simple quartz watch that boomed off of instagram and youtube promotions. Now, if you go through my posts about 3 months back. I asked the same thing, i ended up buying one, i ended up returning it. I picked up this Bulova http://www.amazon.com/Bulova-98H51-Stainless-Steel-Leather/dp/B000WUKJ0O
Bulova is a part of Citizen which is a very very reputable everyday watch brand. My first ever watch was a citizen eco drive that was all black leather straps and i loved it very very much. I would say look for brands that are very reputable and stay off marketing too much. Best everyday bang for your bucks - TIMEX (!) ( super casual not too businessy, and im a business person. i still have a weekender regardless, its awesome.) Bulova/Citizen (perfer citizen but bulova makes great dress watches for cheap and have good quality. Im SUPER pleased with mine and my two favorite watches are both my everyday citizen and dressy bulova).
Other recommended watches from me to you
EDIT: how could i forget Seiko as another recommendation. Great bang for the buck metal linked dress watch if youre in a everyday business setting. switch from metal link watches to leather bands and bam. eyes on wrist everyday as you walk in the office!
Ok, this is so eerily similar to my own situation that I felt I had to comment. I haven't lost my Easy Reader (yet), but I've been looking around a bit and I've liked both the Bulova watch mentioned by DanOlympia (it comes with a brown strap as well) as well as this Citizen eco-drive. I saw the Citizen on someone the other day, it looks really good, it's not too expensive on Amazon, and I think it's pretty good quality.
Have a look at:

Was thinking about this one.. http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B000WUKJ0O/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?qid=1458336650&sr=8-1&pi=SY200_QL40&keywords=bulova+mens+98h51&dpPl=1&dpID=41Hpq7l6TxL&ref=plSrch
Try this Bulova. $95 from Amazon, similar aesthetic.
This one looks pretty nice for a business watch. But I have no idea your age, where you intend to wear the watch, etc. If you're on a budget and want something easy, good looking, versatile, etc then get a timex weekender and add a leather strap.
Normally I agree. http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000WUKJ0O/?tag=hyprod-20&hvadid=15466381059&hvpos=1o1&hvexid=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=988609545413277249&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&ref=asc_df_B000WUKJ0O thats my current watch. So I was thinking this might be a good one when I feel like going with something more interesting.
Akribos XXIV Saturnos
Bulova 98H51
I personally would go for the Bulova because skeleton watches can be very difficult to read. Although the Akribos is an automatic, I have no experience with the quality(although the Amazon reviews don't look promising).
Is there an occasion in mind?
http://www.amazon.ca/Bulova-98H51-Calendar-Strap-Watch/dp/B000WUKJ0O/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1427124503&sr=8-3&keywords=Bulova
I've had my eye on this Bulova for a while
For those wondering what the deleted comment was referring to, it pointed to a nice looking Bulova watch here: http://www.amazon.com/Bulova-98H51-Calendar-Strap-Watch/dp/B000WUKJ0O/
If what your going for is a nice Brown watch. Id recommend a "cheap" quality watch maker. Here i think mfa would agree with a choice like this. http://www.amazon.com/Bulova-98H51-Strap-Calendar-Watch/dp/B000WUKJ0O/ref=sr_1_3?s=watches&ie=UTF8&qid=1348028564&sr=1-3
that first stuhrling hurts my eyes.
This Bulova is 7mm and this citizen is a tad bigger at 8mm but still thin and good quality.
I have this Bulova and ordered a 2-piece tan since the leather has a red hue that should pair well with the rose gold.
http://www.amazon.com/Bulova-98H51-Strap-Calendar-Watch/dp/B000WUKJ0O
I see alot of people mentioning Skagens, so I figured I would post some Bulovas!
Here
and
Here depending on what you're looking for.
They're the nicest ones I have found for the price, but I'd recommend checking out the other models listed on Amazon.
Good luck!
If you like it, that's really all that counts. They look fine and there isn't really anything wrong with them. However their watches use a simple japanese quartz movement and you are basically paying an extra 100 some dollars for a fashion brand.
Some cheaper alternatives that might be higher in quality.
Bulova,
Seiko,
Sthurling,
Also if you buy the G-10 straps elsewhere.. it will be a lot cheaper!
Good Luck
Edit Here's another Bulova that's closer to those DW watches.
I think it's this one on amazon actually. The logo is under the 12 line rather than in place of it.
The new Tissot Heritage series Visodates would fit the bill nicely. Bulova makes a similar, simple design.
http://www.amazon.com/Bulova-98H51-Leather-Dress-Watch/dp/B000WUKJ0O
Citizen has some Eco-Drives that are nice and simple.
Hamilton Jazzmaster is a very popular and highly regarded watch around these parts. That would be an excellent choice, although most are a bit larger than you're looking for.
I sell a lot of vintage pieces and have plenty that would fit the bill well within your price range if you're into vintage watches. Great option for a smaller wrist as vintage pieces tend to be much smaller than today's huge watches.
If you're interested in seeing what I have, feel free to PM me.
This is also an alternative.
Bulova also has a watch in similar style. I personally love this one, though I don't really know how much cheaper it is compared to the DW one.
I got this nice Bulova as a gift when I graduated high school three years ago. It's reasonably priced around $175 new, and it's a comfortable watch to wear everyday. I get lots of compliments about it and I even saw it featured in the recent edition of GQ magazine.
Typically, chronographs fall outside the realm of dress watches. [This] (http://www.amazon.com/Bulova-98H51-Leather-Dress-Watch/dp/B000WUKJ0O/ref=sr_1_43?s=watches&ie=UTF8&qid=1396055933&sr=1-43) might interest you.
Hi guys, I'm currently interested in purchasing a leather watch for casual wear and I'm stuck between these two:
First choice
Second choice
My budget is preferably below $100, and I just want this type of style. As a college student, I plan to wear this almost daily/casually with most of my outfits (hipster/streetwear-ish(?), I don't know how to define it properly). I don't have any preferences in brands or needs besides this type of simple style on the watch face.
This is my first time on the sub and posting, so if anything is wrong or more information is needed please feel free to ask/criticize. Thank you!

I have the one with the bronze sheen and I love it. The strap is a little ehh, but that can swapped out if desired.
Bulova is a similar style I think

I start working at the hospital in a few months and was just looking for a simple presentable watch like this!
I was thinking about getting the bulova 98h51 which has a similar look.
Would gladly provide feedback if you're willing to ship one to Hong Kong.
