First welcome, I am aslo new to sailing. You have probably noticed there are a lot of people who even though you admit "I know nothing about sailing" are going to instead of giving you constructive advice say "you don't know nothing about sailing". So just build thick skin if you want to go sailing.

The Pardey's! are kinda like required reading I guess. I head a couple of there books and I think it is pretty good stuff. The are more on the side of get out and do it vs the "you don't know what you are doing" crowd. On the flip side of budget cruisers bumfuzzle!. I found both of them motivated me and gave me confidence.

A forum that I have found helpful is http://www.cruisersforum.com/ which seem to have some decent conversations but you will have look around for them. Generally supportive group but there naysayers! everywhere.

Everyone has different levels of confort with risk. My process was taking a weeklong bareboat ASA course to expedite the learning processes so I can get out and do some coastal cruising. We did some practice and a lot of reading. We will hopefully close on our Bayfield 29 in a couple weeks. I believe risk is a required part of any adventure and cruising is worth a lot of risk compared to driving on the highway (I consider way more risky than cruising) so I can punch the clock 5 days a week.
Good luck please share any other resources you find!

> They don't have to be dumb for you to be smart.

Yes, I regret writing it that way now, was mostly just joking yet that's a great point :)

>Learning along with people.

Do you believe that folk get to a point where folk just hit the trail and perform, ie they are not really learning much anymore? It's tough to say without appearing arrogant, but I think I had the fundamentals of the mountains/rivers/oceans/trails rock-solid 20 years ago, and everything just goes well! (thus I got paid to do it)

Sure, sub-ideal stuff happens, but you just react via your experience and training, not learn...?

And if you look at all the 1-star reviews of This Book they specifically dislike them because they were learning!! So confusing!

(I feel I'm missing something, because it feels like I should be saying "we all learn forever!" But for outdoors stuff specifically, do we?!)
