The author Mercedes Lackey is pretty famed for her Valdemar series, which IS fantastic, but not quite the genre you describe. However, one of my other favorite series of hers is the Elemental Masters series. It's got magic and ghosts and the supernatural, and there's always strong women in the stories. You'll especially enjoy the more recent ones which have more ghosts and things along that line. Even more so I recommend her Diana Tregarde series which so far is a trilogy about a lot of those supernatural themes that you mentioned. It came out a few years ago but I only recently discovered it... it's a fantastic series and I think you will really enjoy it.
