Do you use HDMI or display port or something else?

If HDMI, then this cable from Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Cable-Matters-USB-C-Supporting-Black/dp/B073H9RG9T ($16.99)
This external graphics card enclosure: https://www.amazon.com/Sonnet-Breakaway-Thunderbolt-Expansion-GPU-350W-TB3Z/dp/B072L9QTZT/ref=sr_1_4?keywords=External+Graphics+card+enclosure&qid=1557706012&s=electronics&sr=1-4 ($199.00)
This graphics card (csgo doesn't need good graphics just that you don't use intel hd graphics): https://www.amazon.com/ZOTAC-GeForce-DisplayPort-128-bit-ZT-P10510A-10L/dp/B01M4MIU94/ref=sr_1_21?keywords=External%2Bgraphics%2Bcard&qid=1557705855&s=gateway&sr=8-21&th=1 ($139.99)

Total cost: $355.98 + shipping

Since you own a Mac you are rich and therefore this isn't a problem.

I use this for 4K at 60 Hz, it should work for your situation too.

I had some issues with my 4k XPS 15 9550 on Win10 x64 doing USB-C/Thunderbolt 3 to Displayport that ultimately I was able to resolve. Hopefully my struggles help you too!

When looking for cables you do NOT need a thunderbolt 3 cable as the other end terminates in HDMI, so something labeled either USB-C or Thunderbolt 3 would be fine. Using a direct cable (like you're doing) was important as the USB-C to displayport adapter I had purchased initially which was then connected to a displayport cable resulted in the screen not being detected. Your cable got good reviews on amazon, but Fakespot contends that there are a LOT of those amazon reviews are sketchy, so that high rating is suspect. I've had good luck with Cable Matters cables, this one only has 3 good reviews on amazon.ca, but the same cable on the US site has a bunch of good Amazon reviews and a much more positive rating on Fakespot. So, it could be the cable.

Also, I did my display configuration through the Intel HD Graphics Control Panel (make sure your drivers are up to date as earlier driver revisions didn't detect my display). I also reduced the resolution on my laptop's display. Upon dropping the local screen's resolution, I did the detect displays within the Intel panel and it found the connected screen. Once it had been setup the first time with a profile I didn't have trouble again (including being able to run both the local and connected displays at max resolution).

What you're describing with the connecting sound makes it seem like the laptop IS detecting the cable and the display, but is struggling to output to it. The fact that you lose audio suggests that its trying to do audio out to the display (as audio can be transmitted over HDMI), but is unable to provide the video. Keep in mind that HDMI is a digital signal which means the picture either comes in, or it doesn't, which is unlike the staticky picture that a weak VGA connection can provide.

I have a Cable Matters USB C to DisplayPort, and they also make an HDMI version: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B073H9RG9T/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_Clu.Bb2G655N3

But really any cable should be fine.

I'd not chain adapter cables, I think you're asking for compatibility headaches that way.

Something like this:

https://www.amazon.com/Cable-Matters-USB-C-Supporting-Black/dp/B073H9RG9T?ref_=bl_dp_s_web_13705622011

There seem to be a lot of variants of these, and I don't use one myself, so I'd research in that direction.

I bought this to hook up to my 4k TV and it is working great:

Pretty much turned my SB2 into a portable steambox :)

> Lenovo Yoga 720 15'

Your laptop has the same hardware as mine. I have the Dell XPS 9560 which has the same CPU and GPU that the Yoga 720 does.

Here is a reddit thread comparing the 2 laptops, including people discussing thunderbolt dock being terrible.

It's crazy the Yoga doesn't have an HDMI. (or at least a mini displayport or mini hdmi) It's thicker than the XPS which has both HDMI and a USB-c/Thunderbolt port.

Either way.... just grab one of these. It's going to be your best option. https://www.amazon.com/Cable-Matters-USB-C-Supporting-Black/dp/B073H9RG9T

Late reply but I just went through this (with a non touchbar model, so I was even more limited).

You have 4 ports on your computer, so get two of these:

Cable Matters USB C to HDMI Cable (USB-C to HDMI Cable) Supporting 4K 60Hz in Black 6 Feet - Thunderbolt 3 Port Compatible for Macbook Pro, Dell XPS 13/15 and More https://www.amazon.com/dp/B073H9RG9T/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_6824AbZ8VV161

If you would still like a dock, get the HyperDrive 7 port dock with the dual plug:

HyperDrive USB C Hub, Best Type-C DUO Adapter 50Gbps for MacBook Pro 2017/2016 13" 15", 7in2: USB-C 100W Power Delivery, USBC 5Gbps Data, 4K HDMI, microSD/SD Card Reader, 2xUSB 3.1 Ports by SANHO https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01MUAEI7J/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_w524AbVRYRNC6

If you get the dock, you can still get two of the above cables or alternatively just get one and the use a regular HDMI for the other. I would recommend this because it’s cheaper and it frees up one more USB C port for whatever you need it for. You’re only going to be using HDMI out for a display.

Basically, each port on the machine only supports one separate display out unless you get an actual TB3 dock (expensive).

Are you looking for a USB C to HDMI cable? If so, Cable Matters is an excellent brand. I highly recommend their cables.
