I would recommend going for the A158 model. Same watch, but with a metal face and band, and only a few dollars more. This thing is dirt cheap, damn durable, comfortable as fuck and the retro look is very versatile, stylistically. Definitely worth considering.

Most watches are only offered in one size, but some are smaller than others. I have 5.75" wrists and my current cheap/casual watches are the Timex Weekender (on me | at Amazon), Casio A158W-1 (on me | at Amazon), and RAM Rugged Field Watch (on me | at Amazon). Also good is this Seiko 5, but I don't own one right now. Anyway, I have no idea what your desired style or budget is, but hopefully those suggestions and photos are of some use.

EDIT: Also, if you're looking for NATO straps, check out Crown and Buckle. Their new strap design has holes cut for people with really small wrists. Even with my tiny wrists, I've still got two holes left.

It says the case is stainless steel as well, in multiple places, but I guess you'll want to make sure it's not resin painted a silver color.

Okay I'll do my best to help you even though I don't know as much about digital watches as I do mechanicals. My first suggestion would be the Casio F-91W because who cares what others think; if you like the watch keep wearing it! All jokes aside here's another Casio A-158WA-1. I think the A158 ticks all the same boxes as the F-91W except it looks a little more classy than the black plastic resin. Another alternative to that one would be the Casio F-91WM-7ACF this obviously is another F-91W just in a different color scheme. If you'd like a little calculator action how about a fancy Casio EAW-DBC-611-1DF Data Bank.

All suggestions I've given have all been less than 10 mm's in thickness. From all the looking I've done it really doesn't seem that you can get a digital watch that's less than 10 mm's thick that's not a Casio F-91W clone of some kind haha. Hope some of these suggestions could help.

Got this on eBay recently for about US$40 shipped. Unlike modern day digitals designed to have the same "retro" look/feel (e.g. this Casio), this thing has a case made completely from stainless steel instead of silver-painted plastic, so it's far less likely to just fall apart after a few years. Also unlike modern Casios (including the G-shocks, which are the only ones I would trust to last a long time), the harder to use recessed pusher at the top left is only used to adjust the time, not to do every day things like reset the stopwatch, which should be quick and easy. 70s/80s digital watches really are better built and better thought out than most of today's.

The crystal is in pretty good condition for a 30+ year old watch (older than me!). Unfortunately the bracelet it came with is a horrible painted plastic thing that doesn't fit properly and rattles around a lot, so it's going to have to be replaced. Tracking down the original bracelet for this would probably be more effort than the watch itself was worth, so I'll probably just try to find a generic bracelet that has the correct taper to match the casing, or maybe even a black NATO or similar?

It's not as pretty as all the lovely divers that get posted here, but it's a lot more practical for me as a daily wear-to-work watch, since I never have to worry about forgetting to adjust the calendar for new months, and it comes with a chronograph and countdown timer, both of which I'll use often. I also really like that it shows the month and the date on the front screen, in that order - as an Australian living in the US who is trying to avoid rewiring his brain too much, I like that when I'm filling out forms I can just read the date off of my watch in the American order without having to think about it.

I intended to back the kickstarter, forgot about it, and hadn't set a reminder, then after the kickstarter ended, I saw it again, shit myself thinking I'd missed out, so when I saw they were available for pre-order on the website, I pulled the trigger immediately on the brass bezel version with regular lume. I even lucked out because right before they started shipping, the guy who makes them emailed me to ask if I wanted the vintage lume version instead, because they had some of those left, and I said yes after spending a long time looking at the photos. I'm glad I switched because the vintage lume looks really awesome, and goes really well with the warm brass tone of the watch case.

Don't have any pics of my own to share because it's actually a birthday gift, and it's not actually my birthday yet, but I had a good look at it when it arrived and I love it.

Worst: Casio A158WA-1

Not a costly mistake, but despite looking really cool, this thing is unwearable because of how the bracelet constantly catches on my arm hair. My wife wears it and seems to be getting on with it, my arms aren't even that hairy but it just wasn't happening.

Casio took one of the world's cheapest watches, and blinged it out. It's hilarious, really. Like people wear cheap digital watches, and all-gold watches, but all-gold cheap digital watches?

It's like a mashup between HBO's Silicon Valley and a low budget Rap video.

But even without the Japanese/hipster irony factor, it's a well-designed, highly-functional watch, in a bigger slightly more masculine form than their standard A158WA-1.

There's the Casio A158W-1. It's on the thinner side and shouldn't cause any issues with your shirt sleeves.

i have some watches that are "nicer" then the casio a158wa but i reach for the casio 70% of the time. it's small, thin, comfortable, easy to adjust the band (no removing links) and it gets a surprising amount of compliments because of it's 1980s appearance. and it's <$20.

Yeah it's debatable. I love some heft on my watches and the other two watches have just that as they're entirely metal. It's extremely light and I guess I'm just equating that with "cheap". Of course, there's a positive to that since you can hardly feel it on your wrist so it's easier to forget that its even on you.

I noticed that you have some high quality watches that probably have some level of heft to them so you'll notice the difference immediately with the Casio.

Even the product description on Amazon says "Stainless steel watch" when only the caseback and band are stainless steel. It's deceptive and I'm not sure why they have it like that.

As for vintage Casio's, I believe they did. Most modern Casio digital watches no longer have steel casings with the exception of a few g-shocks.

Hello everyone, I'm selling a ~10 months old in my hands but literally a brand new G-Shock in Pink and Gray dial. I was out diving this weekend too! I got a couple of rockfish, while my friends got some calicos and kelp fish. Vis in santa barbara this weekend was ~25-40ft. I dived with my trusty casio. I used to scuba with my Orient Mako till I flooded it last year.

I tried to look up what resins are used to make the Casio watches, but to no avail (could be PU, MMA, anything really). I don't think folks know just how caustic organic solvents are in certain concentrations. You've probably anticipated that benzene will likely permanently discolour light plastics. If it were me, and I had benzene and DCM sloshing around, I would only trust rubber or steel, and I'd wear it over top my lab coat. And I wouldn't want to have to touch the watch AT ALL with my gloves on, so I would opt for a digital watch with seconds displayed at all times. Be mindful that the screen cover is plastic, and even acetone might do it in. I love it because the button on the right switches between 12hr and 24hr time. Perfect for report and note writing. And it's cheap enough to be semi-disposable. Only complaint is the metal clasp comes undone at times. You might want to look into the black with a rubber strap that won't come undone.

Especially as there are fully steel (classic) watches, such as from Casio, that cost less than 50 euros for steel watch AND steel band together. :P And as we all know, Casio has awesome build quality, their watches are basically tanks in terms of sturdiness.

I would say G shock if you wear more streetwear, Skagen for something kinda dressy, or a Casio like this if you're more hipster. All pretty decent and cheap.

I wear the slightly larger A168W model. This watch is fashionable atm but the style has been around since the 80s and is pretty proven to look good with most anything. It even looks great with a suit.

I'm a little late. Do you have a recommendation on style if you were going to add to my collection? I currently have the Timex Weekender, old school casio, and the Huawei Watch.

They're cheap af (metal version is 12 bucks, resin is 10), meaning you don't need to worry about them.

They run a quartz movement that rarely drops more than a second a month, most times much less.

Their battery lasts up to 10 years depending on backlight usage.

They're surprisingly durable with a strong water resistance and a tightly packed case.

I could sing their praises for a while. Just ask /r/watches, they're killer timepieces.

I've worn this daily for over 2 years and it's great.

The way I see it you can either get this and pick up a new one for the price of some beer, or go with something like a Breitling B1 or one of their ana-digi pilot's watches. Or go whole hog and get an Omega X-33.

I agree with LawsListens on this, and we have very similar opinions. I think this is a case where you need to determine what makes it seem cheap to you. For some it is the seemingly random colors on many of the plastic models.

My favorite cheap black model is the Casio F105, but they got it down to blue and grey on black. I think putting these on a nato strap makes them look really sharp, and much less cheap. If you want a silver case look at the Casio A158, or the Royale ( AE1200 ). I have the F105 ( and a couple G-Shocks, but these are way too thick based on what you said ).

There are some nice "Ana-Digi" models that have a small LCD display on an analog watch, and might give you some of what you want, like this AW49, or this AW80. I have never bought any of this, but they seem like a good middle ground.

If you want something a bit more "office acceptable", you probably need to go pure analog, but you are going to give up a number of cool functions that you may use from your digital. If you want something that is inexpensive and tough Casio Duro MDV106, it is a 200m diver, with a stainless steel case, and a screw down crown. These can usually be found for $45-60, but it has some size to it at 44mm. Probably my favorite, under the radar pick is the SNK80x, personally I like the SNK807 ( navy blue ) or the 803 ( beige ), but they are all the same great watch, and usually under $70. I own both of these.

They are the model number of the computer inside a certain watch model. It determines all the functions and screen layout. In a way it is equivalent to the movement: vastly different watches can use the same movement, so they have the same performance and functionality even if they are not that similar on the outside.

I love these too. The Casio F-91W is the classic (and has some interesting history. From what I've seen, though, you should absolutely not buy it at an Urban Outfitters or American Apparel. They will charge you well over twice what it costs on Amazon. (It should be <$10.)

Perhaps more in line with OP's style, though, might be a A158W-1 or a A168W-1 (or one of the 'related items'). Those bracelets class it up a bit.

What I wear most of all though is a Seiko a bit like this, which was a gift from my Grandfather. So 'vintage' digitals like that might be something to look at, although they will be a little more expensive.

I really like the look of this Timex classic (Amazon India lists it as model no. TW2P484006S), as well as this similar Casio.

However, they're both rather small at 34mm and 32mm respectively, and I prefer a larger size (about 40mm and above). Do you know of a similar but larger minimalist digital watch by any brand that I could check out?

I'm not particular about its features, though things like a backlight, multiple time zones and 50/100m water resistance for swimming would be nice.

Most "minimal" quartz watches have <10 USD movements in them so what you are paying for is fashion. These are the MVMT, Daniel Wellington, Nixon, Fossil, ect. You can buy them if you like the way they look, there is nothing wrong with that, but know they are built fairly cheaply and marked up to +$100 for no reason other than fashion. You can checkout DHGate and buy a fake DW watch for $7-12 from China that will be identical in quality to the actual DW watch, and could potentially even come from the same supplier! (not recommending, just commenting)

It really depends on what styles you like and how much you want to spend.

Watches I would recommend that are in my opinion minimal:

Casio Men's A158WA-1DF.
Its not super aesthetically minimal, but its ultra cheap, I think it is relatively stylish, impeccably reliable, easy to read, good features (light, alarm, stopwatch, long battery life). This watch got me through a year aboard a Nuclear Submarine and served me well as an alarm clock, stop watch, and time keeper. It dresses up and down very easily, and I wore it to dinner in foreign ports as well as in the engine room taking logs on equipment. I still have it in my rotation. At 33mm thick, with an 18mm band that tapers, this watch has a very low profile, minimal wrist presence. For 12 bucks you cant not want one.


Junkers Bauhaus
Much more expensive, especially for an entry level piece, but very well made. Mechanical, Japanese movement, built in Germany, certain to impress watch enthusiasts and normies alike. Its automatic, meaning it does not have a battery, and a mechanism winds the watch up due to the movement of your wrist throughout the day. This also means that if you dont wear it for a few days it can stop running, but all you need to do is give it a shake and set it again to get it going. There are some quarts models by Junkers that are cheaper, also even some models with Automatic Swiss movements, worth taking a look. Some cool features this watch has are the power meter, so know by how much the movement is wound as well as ability to perform as a 24hr watch for military time. Easily made a dress watch but good as an everyday casual watch as well. 41mm case, so it will wear very modern (ie large).

Sieko 5
This watch is not as minimal in the aesthetic sense, ie the face has more than just tick marks at each hour, and it has both day and date functions. It is another automatic, and I will argue that it is still pretty minimal. At ~50-60USD is is a perfect entry level choice for a first automatic/mechanical watch, and comes in several colors. Well made for the price. At 37mm it wears much smaller than most popular fashion watches (one of the reasons I recommend it as a minimal watch). It will suit you in both casual and fomal settings, and will appeal to both watch nerds and every day people. Not gaudy or pretentious like a Swiss made, gold piece, but it has some character and soul. I would recommend if you buy this watch to also pick up a band, as the one supplied from Sieko is uncomfortable and unattractive in my opinion. The watch will do well on a Nato band, or a light tan leather band (check out the amazon reviews user photos)


Casio Men's MQ24-7E
Another Casio, not as versatile since it is very casual, but undeniably minimal. Very similar to the watch worn by the Pope. If you want ultra cheap, reliable, and analog this is a good choice.
