I'll second the support for Fundamentals of Catholic Dogma by Ott. It's a decently comprehensive overview of Catholic theology, why the Church has the positions it does and why it rejects other alternative positions. If you're looking for an understanding of what Catholics believe and why, you can't get much better. I dunno if I'd call it dry, it's definitely to the point and reads like it was written for an academic understanding.
If you want an alternative that was written more recently Catholic Theology: An Introduction is less "dry" and presents the doctrines of the Church in a manner that is more for interested laypeople than the approach Ott took aiming it at the academic audience.
