There is a discussion of this trend in a great book called "[Cheap] (http://www.amazon.com/Cheap-High-Cost-Discount-Culture-ebook/dp/B002KS3AJS/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1408661928&sr=1-1&keywords=cheap)"
The way the book author frames it, this is a total flip of the product/brand relationship. In a discussion of a Coach bag, she points out that, at one point (and in the main Coach shop), you see the Coach brand (literally--the label) and you can be confident that it is of high quality, good materials, well put together and so on.
At the outlet, this is the reverse. You are paying for a label. That bag is not worth the price charged, without the label. But the label/brand no longer means high quality, good materials, etc.
