Are you sold on the netgear stuff? If not, try a Cisco SG300-52. Link them together with fiber. For the Firewall/router I'd go with a Cisco RV320/RV325.

Switch (qty 2): SG300-52

SFP Module (qty 2): MGBSX1

Router/Firewall: RV325

I've been living in this environment for many years and still do to this day. Do not think like this. Please. It will only make things worse.

You have to figure out what is needed and you have to figure out what it's going to cost. Yes, you do need to make your best effort to make it as cheap as possible but if that process requires you to buy equipment that actually can't do what you need, or if it's something that's going to be obsolete in 6 months when another need comes up, then you are only hurting the business.

Once you've done the work to find the best cost give them the price. If they say it's too expensive then tell them they can't have what they want.

So now that all that has been said, after all the research I did looking for the best value on a switch, this is what we got just a few months ago. We needed a core switch and introduced vlans to go with our new VMware environment and it's working great.

I got 3 and a half hours of sleep, and was woken out of a lucid dream this morning by (internal to the dream) a malevolent spirit appearing as a guy in a cow suit flanked by two women in cow-spotted bikinis in the window of the house dream-me was staying in.

It makes about as much sense in content.

In more relevant Sysadmin news, I'm still torn between a Cisco SG-300, an Ubiquiti EdgeSwitch Lite, or an HP 1920.

I was talking about this cutting board actually:

Make sure it supports enough for your needs:

I think its 8 groups or something like that. It also has CLI and L3 features. Its not the best switch on the market but for 700$ it gives a bunch a run for their money.

Ninja Edit:Deli meat slicer is always relevant.
