This one is also on sale and a lot smaller for people who don’t like big watches. Citizen Men's Eco-Drive Stainless Steel Watch with Day/Date display, BM8180-03E https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000EQS1JW/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_zsulDb8Q8CMWK

Sorry for the throwaway. Felt a little weird posting this on my normal account, which has personal info on it. Here's what's in the pic:

Handguns

EDIT: No, I don't carry these at the same time.
M&P Shield 9mm w/ Old Faithful holster (warm weather carry)
M&P9c w/Crimson Trace Grips and Shibumi hybrid holster (for jacket weather)

Carried inside the waistband at the 1:00 position. I sometimes use a Smartcarry holster if I need to be extra discreet, or want extra comfort. When I go running, I carry a Ruger LCR in the Smartcarry.

knife
Gerber AR 3.00

I do terrible, awful things to knives, so I just buy cheap ones I can afford to replace. I have several knives I carry but the Gerber has been around the longest and has survived the most abuse.

flashlight
Sunwayman M10R

I just started to EDC a pocket flashlight. It’s incredible how useful it is, especially around the house. I like the Sunwayman because the brightness setting is easy to change quickly. Also, unlike many similar lights, the outside is not knurled so it doesn’t scratch up my phone.

keychain
Nothing special about the keychain itself, but I have on it a FourSevens Quark Preon AAA light and a tiny capsule that holds a single bill for emergency cash.

wallet
All-Ett Sport Wallet

Stupid name, great wallet. Super-thin and durable. I sometimes forget it’s in my pocket. Anyone carrying around cow hide should seriously check this out. No more back pain!

belt
Ares Tactical Ranger Belt

Yeah, it’s uber-tactical and a little mall-ninja-ish, but it’s the only nylon belt I’ve been able to find that doesn’t use velcro and can also comfortably support a firearm.

sunglasses
Revision Vipertail

I’m at the shooting range about twice a week for work, so I like sunglasses that are suitable for everyday use and are also rated for high impact

watches
Casio AW80V-3BV
Citizen Eco-Drive

I just recently started wearing a wristwatch again after 10 years without one. I tried pocket watches, but none seemed rugged enough. Then I went to a belt clip watch, but that selection was even smaller. So now I’m back at wristwatches and I’m trying out these two.

phone
Motorola Droid Bionic with Otterbox Defender

The phone is already pretty big, and enormous with the Otterbox on it. I love that it seems nigh-indestructible, but the rubber surface makes it hard to get out of my pocket.

Is your friend a watch enthusiast? If not, he might be better off with a quartz watch. They are more accurate, less delicate and less overall hassle compared to an auto.

Citizen BM8180-03E Solar powered, so it doesn't require battery changes, and 100m water resistance, so it's safe for pool, beach or shower. If you don't like that particular model, Citizen and Seiko both make various solar powered models.

u/CarpeDiempreecha · 11 pointsr/malefashionadvice

I think my Citizen Eco-Drive is pretty clean. I really like it!

And according to the PriceZombie below it's at a pretty good price right now.

u/dasdarun · 11 pointsr/Watches

Citizen BM 8180

Price: 85$

Water Resistance: 100m

Movement: solar-powered quartz

Size: 37mm, 18mm lug width

Link: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000EQS1JW/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_awdb_bBeiAb9WW7AF6

Description: The numbers and the hands have very good lume and last throughout the night. The strap that comes with the watch is a green canvas and has metallic strap holes( sorry! I don't know what they are called). Usually people are not fond of the strap, but it is definitely tougher and more durable.

u/SirRipo · 8 pointsr/Watches

Citizen Eco-Drive BM8180-03E

Price: $75-$100

Movement: Eco-Drive E100/quartz

Style: Military/Field

Size: 37mm (without crown)

Link: Amazon page

Description:
A great choice for someone looking for a durable, military-style watch without having to worry about batteries. The stock band it comes with leaves something to be desired, but it looks great and is very comfortable on a NATO/Zulu strap (18mm). The lume is nice and bright, even with other lights around it, and without a strong charge source (I work in a bar and even with the dim lights I notice it glowing hours later).

If I had to change anything about it I would change out the mineral face for sapphire, as mine has managed to collect a small scratch in the year I've owned it, but it's not a deal-breaker for me.

u/tappman321 · 8 pointsr/Watches

If you want a chrono, a Seiko SSB031, mecha-quartz is a good value for $125. You get a smooth sweeping chrono hand, which is nice to have on a quartz watch. If that doesn't fit your style, you can look up different SSB models to find one you like.

If you want a field watch, Citizen Men's BM8180-03E is a nice quartz watch for $90. You can get a Timex Expedition for cheaper, but I think the Citizen is a better value for the price point. The Timex Waterbury is a nice watch for $100-$150, and I really like the look of the watch (might be overpriced for what you get but I just really like the look).

And also check out some G-Shocks. They don't get much love here, but I honestly think if you just care for a watch you can use, and don't care about looks, a DW-5600E is the best watch you can get in your price range.

Hello! Not a question but just saw these incredible deals on Amazon and wanted to share. Beige Seiko 5 SNK803 is going for $34.03 and the Citizen Eco-Drive counterpart, the BM8180-03E is going for $54.05 ATM!

u/Herrfurher12 · 7 pointsr/Watches

You've heard wrong. MVMT is the absolute worst company for the price. It is just a chinese watch with chinese movement, nothing new. avoid brands like these, for ex: Daniel Wellington. I suggest you start by looking at Timex, my favorite brand. After that, Seiko, Orient, Citizen etc. I'm giving you amazon links to my favorite ones.

u/SarcasticOptimist · 6 pointsr/Watches

This Citizen seems to be perfect. Solar powered, quartz, cheap, and a nylon strap, which shouldn't be terrible if you sweat (you can replace it with a bracelet, which I find better for handling stink).

u/Number_06 · 5 pointsr/BuyItForLife

I've had this model Citizen Eco-Drive analogue watch for about four years now. It's solar-powered so there's no battery to change. It keeps fantastic time. I set it according to time.gov at every time change and so far it has never been off by more than four seconds. I didn't care for the original watch band and replaced it with a nylon military-style one. It has stood up just fine to daily wear.

u/Kelwynn · 5 pointsr/malefashionadvice

You can try the Citizen BM8180-03E or the Parnis big pilot if you're looking for a similar one under $100

u/i_speak_the_truf · 5 pointsr/Watches

I'd probably go with the Seiko SNZG series. They are larger and built better than the SNK series.

For a true "pay as little as possible" watch, the Timex Weekender and Expedition meet all your requirements aside from being quartz.

From a practical standpoint, this Citizen is probably as good as it gets:

This is a great start for your BoB but it seems like it's really a get somewhere bag (or should be). Here's a few comments.

  • Get rid of the candles - unneeded
  • Remove the passport (you won't be escaping to another country!) In its place, put a photocopy of your license.
  • Put your meds in a sealed, vacuum packed bag - if you don't own a vacuum sealer, get one, you'll soon be vacuum packing everything!
  • For the gloves, get a pair of Mechanix
  • Change the credit card to the cash - when the power is out, cash is king - keep many small bills
  • Watch the prepaid phone plans, the sim cards may expire - remember - any charged old phone can still call 911 without a plan!
  • a small solar charger for your phones and adapters for multiple phone types would be a good addition
  • Learn how to clean a fish
  • Replace the digital watch with a automatic or solar one, something inexpensive
  • Add something to carry water

    Good luck!

The Hamilton Khaki Field Quartz might be what you're looking for. Apparently 38mm, and there's one on the subreddit's front page too.

I've got an automatic Khaki King, and am quite pleased with it. In terms of value for money it's not quite at Seiko levels but probably as close as you'll get in the Swatch family.

One of Citizen's Eco-Drive watches would also be a good candidate. The strap it comes with is not so great, but the technology in the case is excellent. You'd be surprised how much a watch's look changes when you put a nice strap on it.

Edit: Added imgur mirror for last link.

/r/Watches has a buying guide for watches from $0-$250 here that you might find useful.

Some recommendations:

Seiko 5 Automatic SNK809 - $65

Seiko SKX009K1 Dive Watch - $180

Citizen Eco-Drive BM8180 - $124

Timex Expedition Field Chronograph - $48

Timex Weekender - $32

Casio G-Shock DW5600E - $41

Casio F91W - $11

Do you have any preference towards digital, quartz (battery powered), or automatic (mechanical)?

u/SuitedPair · 4 pointsr/Watches

A Citizen Eco Drive. There are plenty of options.

u/Freeman720 · 4 pointsr/Gotham

If anyone(like me) was wondering what watch Bullock was wearing in the beginning, it was this one, but on a black leather strap.

u/megadookie · 3 pointsr/Watches

Not sure if it is /r/watches worthy, but I recently got the Citizen EcoDrive BM8180-03. Simple face, no complications, day of week. Solar cell. I replaced the canvas strap with a black leather strap. You can find them for $80-120.

u/LogicWavelength · 3 pointsr/Watches

This one is 38mm I think, and much thinner. Also cheaper. I have it's bigger brother, and the strap is HORRIFYING. Use the extra savings to buy a leather strap.

u/strolls · 3 pointsr/sailing

I had in mind something like this or this, but I think I was thinking of Timex, instead, I think /r/watches recommend them. 1, 2.

It's kinda late here now, so my mind is fuzzy.

Seiko: 1, 2

u/BananaOfDoom · 3 pointsr/malefashionadvice

I'll toss in my picks for watches under $100 as well. Seiko Series 5 Automatic and this Citizen Eco-drive. I really like the Seiko 5, and with a leather strap, it could be really sleek.

u/offby1 · 3 pointsr/Watches

I have had this Citizen for almost 15 years. Works great.

u/WatchandThings · 3 pointsr/Watches

BM8180-03E is a Citizen eco drive version of their field watch, and I hear is a great watch.

Then there is something like this from Seiko that is a good all-rounder that has the solar power source.

u/SWAGMASTER_FLEX · 3 pointsr/malefashionadvice

The Citizen Eco Drive is a fantastic watch, great for everyday use. I paired it with the NATO band and it looks very sharp!

u/tls445 · 3 pointsr/malefashionadvice

This watch has a similar style, but is much nicer imo.

u/SirVanderhoot · 3 pointsr/malefashionadvice

I have a Citizen Eco-Drive that I really like. Easy to read and not giant as to make your wrist look tiny. Extra-durable strap (easy enough to change if you don't like it), really a solid every-day watch.

u/mikeyc252 · 3 pointsr/malefashionadvice

I really like field watches. I would get this Citizen
or Bulova then pick 5 nylon straps from Central Watch.

If the straps get effed up, just use another one.

u/exparrot · 3 pointsr/Watches

BM8180-03E. I bought it at a local store but it's $87 on Amazon with free prime shipping. You might be able to find it for cheaper if you search online.

EDIT: not that you asked, but this strap from C&B

u/Majorminormajor · 3 pointsr/malefashionadvice

My personal opinion is no. The general advice is to buy a watch from a watch company, rather than a company that puts its brand on another company's watch.

What draws you to this watch? It kind of looks like you like simple black watches. Do you like large watches? Do you like field watches? Do you care about quartz (battery powered) vs. automatic (a weight swings around in the back and winds the spring; less accurate, kind of cooler, more expensive to service in five years). Like pencilcup said, field watches are a very casual style.

Seiko 5 automatic field watch, 37mm: http://www.amazon.com/Seiko-SNK809-Automatic-Watch-Canvas/dp/B002SSUQFG/

Seiko 5 automatic field watch, 42mm: www.amazon.com/Seiko-SNZG15-Automatic-Black-Nylon/dp/B006I22GT2/

Citizen field watch 37mm (Eco-Drive, solar powered): http://www.amazon.com/Citizen-BM8180-03E-Eco-Drive-Canvas-Strap/dp/B000EQS1JW/

Or maybe you'd like something more like a flieger watch?

http://www.countycomm.com/maratacpilotlarge.html

Or a black Orient bambino?

u/Weenie · 3 pointsr/Watches

Seek out more of the Seiko 5 models. Everyone around here refers to the SNK809 as "The Seiko 5", but there are many more. Check out seiko5finder.com and narrow your search by case width. Playing with different straps will also give you more variety.

My SNX809 has quickly become one of my favorite pieces. The case is 36mm and has a very vintage style to it. http://i.imgur.com/kx7pNFu.jpg http://i.imgur.com/VDPybfX.jpg

Also, this Citizen has always looked great to me. It's 37mm.

u/kurazaybo · 3 pointsr/Watches

My first option would be this g shock, It is quite big and almost impossible to destroy and it features a chrono, backlight and solar power. I have one.

My second choice is the Casio AQS810. It is almost a G shock, without the thoughness. In my opinion the green and navy have the most eye catching colors, but you can also get them in white, red or my favorite, turquoise. There is also a version with a metal bracelet (the case is painted plastic) for almost the same price.

For something more traditional, check the Orient Tri Star. Compared to Seikos of similar price you get a solid steel caseback and metal bracelet, and the movement is more simple and can be repaired almost endlessly (I've had a couple repaired like three times because I dropped them from time to time, they still keep good time). This was my first real watch, my father gave it to me when I was 11-12. I still have it and it works, but is unsightly.

You can get a plastic Swatch chrono. The same movement is used in much more expensive watches.

For a busy dial with a lot going on, this Casio is interesting. It features an anual calendar. It is definitely bulky and durable.

You can get a more traditional eco drive too.

Any of my suggestions can be worn by an adult, I think, in case he does not like it.

If he likes watches, in a few years he might upgrade to the Seiko Adventure or the Swatch Skybond.

Let me know if you like any of these, I've seen lots and lots of sub $100 watches and may be able to help you. Btw you mentioned you don't like the metal case, what do you mean?

u/Weeman2412 · 3 pointsr/Watches

https://www.amazon.com/Citizen-Eco-Drive-Stainless-display-BM8180-03E/dp/B000EQS1JW Shame it's missing a screw down crown, but 100m water resist isn't bad.

u/Karamazov · 3 pointsr/malefashionadvice

I always thought that Citizen had really good watches. I have this one and a couple different straps to use on it. I know it is a bit plain, but it is durable as hell. Also, it is good thickness and size and is comfortable to wear.

I prefer the leather and cloth strap varieties because then the strap is usually interchangeable. Because the face of my watch is so basic looking, it can be matched with virtually any sort of strap. Currently, my favorite is [this one from Crown and Buckle.] (http://www.crownandbuckle.com/straps-by-size/18mm-straps/marina-18mm-brown-vintage.html)

Hey all,

Any advice about best time/place to buy the following:

  1. High quality Orvis/Barbour/Filson field jacket. I really like the Orvis Heritage Field Coat or a Barbour Ashby Midas. (XL/XXL/LT). Open to other options. Just like the classing field jacket/barn/chore coat type look. Ideally will be water proof as I plan to wear it for 3 seasons with layering.
  2. $70- $100 Field watch with nylon band. Probably a Seiko or Citizen. I like this watch for reference and am wondering if it will ever get cheaper: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000EQS1JW/ref=sspa_dk_detail_2?psc=1&pd_rd_i=B000EQS1JW&pd_rd_w=2mRd9&pf_rd_p=8a8f3917-7900-4ce8-ad90-adf0d53c0985&pd_rd_wg=mCk7r&pf_rd_r=7RXGMZ428Q7MKKKRBARH&pd_rd_r=0b84c13d-732e-11e9-b82d-3b1b552168eb

Some recommendations by Seiko, who I always recommend for a good cheap watch, and as for the strap, easy to replace with a nice leather band, metal isn't as heavy as you think it is either.

Lmk what you end up with.

u/gennui · 3 pointsr/Watches

If your budget is less than 100, I'd recommend looking at quartz watches. My dad isn't as into watches, for him it's just a tool. So I wouldn't want him to deal with the downsides of a mechanical watch (i.e. inaccuracies over time, stops if not worn).

Maybe look at some timex weekender styles, they have a lot of interesting designs:

Here's an example

Another timex weekender (I have this one and it ticks really loudly)

Here's a watch I've been a little interested in lately (Citizen BM8180)

u/qsucvatz · 3 pointsr/AskReddit

Good crystal face will resist scratches better.

It all depends on your purpose - my favorite watch is http://www.amazon.com/Citizen-Eco-Drive-Canvas-Strap-BM8180-03E/dp/B000EQS1JW/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=watches&qid=1265680592&sr=1-2

Solar powered because replacing batteries sucks. Has the date and day, because I don't bother remember the day number. Classy look and easy to read, plus a hardy band for all the hiking and running I do with it.

u/Gullex · 3 pointsr/gadgets

I'm a pretty outdoorsy sort and currently I love the shit out of this watch. It's plenty accurate enough for me, solar powered, waterproof to 100 meters, and glows all night. Way less than $1,000.

u/DapperDanTheMan · 3 pointsr/Watches

That is a beautiful watch for the price. It is similar to another Citizen Eco-Drive I was looking at for him, but at a much lower price.

The only thing I am worried about is it being an automatic. He's 7, so he isn't going to be very gentle with it. What do you think? Could he damage it fairly easily?

I guess if he did it'd be no big deal since it can be fixed, and it doesn't cost too much.

u/Magichamsterorgy · 3 pointsr/malefashionadvice

Citizen Eco Drives go on sale for <$100 pretty often, just check /r/frugalmalefashion regularly. That's the best casual watch in your price range, imo. If you want a different band just check out cheapestnatostraps.com or NATO Strap Co.

If you don't mind a slightly heavier/thicker case then check out the Seiko 5 line. They're $50 and mechanical (self-powered, no batteries), and extremely well-made for the price.

u/Alakazam · 3 pointsr/Watches

The Bambino is actually pretty unique in that regard. There's a reason it comes so highly recommended.

What's your budget for a field watch? There's plenty available at a variety of different price points. For an entry level field watch, the two I'd recommend are this citizen and This bertucci, although the latter doesn't have a day complication. This Victorinox is slightly larger, but has a sapphire crystal

For a more complicated design (with a compass complication!), check out the Seiko Prospex.

All are water resistant to 100m, so good for everything except actually diving with them. But even then, it'll probably still be fine.

u/banilmd · 3 pointsr/frugalmalefashion

Just wanted to add this really good deal on a citizen eco drive that i found. Hopefully it’ll help some of you guys out! Link

u/Greyzer · 2 pointsr/Watches

This Citizen has a military look and is a solid choice.

Vostok has quite a few military styled watches...

u/skipsmagee · 2 pointsr/Watches

If you like that style, what about the $87 Citizen BM8180? Eco-drives are solar-powered quartz.

u/tehcondor42 · 2 pointsr/malefashionadvice

Popular choice for a canvas strap is the Timex Weekender. But some might say it looks a little cheap, and you might feel it looks a little cluttered.

Another popular choice is the Seiko 5. Good quality, low price, simple design.

I also like this Bulova, but you might think the face is a little flashy. And Citizen always makes a good product, although I haven't had any experience with this model.

Hopefully this helps!

u/BourbonJungle · 2 pointsr/malefashionadvice

Perhaps a Mondaine? I've got pretty thin wrists as well, and I've had my eyes on Citizen bm8180 and Seiko 5. They're on the small side, 36-37 mm, but they're still a bit thick. Note that changing the strap isn't too hard. I also remember Stuhrling being recommended as cheap and slim.

I need of a recommendation for a Christmas present for my dad. He wants a "rugged" watch, meaning a watch that he can wear daily, but still use when out in town etc. I was thinking something like this , however that watch can't be shipped to Denmark, so I need something in the same style and price-range. Any recommendations?

To build on what Coffeeshopman said, if you're going to invest a hundred dollars, it may as well be a hundred well spent. The brands they listed are all Japanese and offer a good value of reasonably well made watches at lower price points. Citizen may interest you in particular as their Eco-Drive watches run off of batteries which are recharged from sunlight and artificial light, requiring very little maintenance.

Furthermore, you may need to investigate what kind of watch you want ( e.g., quartz vs. automatic, which is to say, battery-operated vs. self-winding mechanical gear operated) and what features you would like (some watches you linked have a chronograph / stopwatch for measuring elapsed time). There are pros and cons to these things, but most people on this subreddit heavily favor automatic watches.

Based on these ideas and your aesthetic guidelines, I've pasted a number of links below. I hope they are of some use to you. You will note that Casio is absent. This is merely because they are better known for watches that are more sporty in design and which are typically digital.

Citizen BM8180. Under $100 field watch (similar vibe to the Hamilton field already posted). I would highly recommend picking up a pack of NATO straps to go along with it or any field watch. NATO straps take about 1 minute to switch once you get used to doing it, and it makes you feel like you're wearing a new watch! This watch also has the Eco Drive movement, so it's charge lasts up to six months.

Tldr; whatever you get, get NATO straps too.

It really depends on what you're looking for in a watch. If you're looking for a nice dress watch around that price point, I would recommend looking in to this Citizen.

I personally don't really like the second watch as much but you should go for it if you like it. The Seiko 5 and this Citizen are some of my recommendations for entry level watches.

There are three directions you can go with this.

  1. Keep it cheap, and bank on the reality that you're probably going to break it.
  • Timex IronMan, low-end G-Shock, anything rugged in the $50 & under range.
  1. Go all in with a digital wrist-computer.
  • No, not a real smart watch. Those are too high maintenance.
  • Maybe a Casio Pathfinder or something.
  • Something in the $200 range.
  • These do offer a whole array of functionality that can be useful in the field.
  • But these tend to be huge on the wrist and can snag on all kinds of shit.
  1. Go classy, non-digital.

RE: Citizen BM8180-03E 37mm. This is a solar powered quartz that does not need battery changes. It is 100m water resistant, so it's safe for pool or shower.

I have one, and love it! My wrist is 7" even.

u/hottubrash · 2 pointsr/malefashionadvice

If anyone is looking for a nice military watch for well under 100, I only have praise for the build quality and durability of Citizen's entry eco-drive military style watch. I swapped the included band for a NATO style band as well, and it just looks amazing. Biggest plus is it's solar powered, so no need to ever change batteries.

u/WillNotStop · 2 pointsr/malefashionadvice

I see that you wrote that everyone here seems to like the weekender. It's one of the better budget watches sub $50. It looks like you're open to suggestions, but seeing as how you're looking for affordable watches, I'll keep my suggestions under $100.

Might I suggest getting an automatic watch instead. Seiko 5's are incredibly popular as a first "real" watch, the most popular I've seen is probably the SNK809.

There's also the Citizen Eco-Drives with a lot of popular models such as this one, but keep in mind it's still a quartz (it's a quartz watch that automatically powers itself using a built in solar panel).

There are other watch makers (or even vintage like the affordable Vostok Amphibias) I suggest these two lines of watches because they are automatic watches from reliable watchmakers that make your watch more than just something to keep track of time, we have cellphones and other devices for that. You can find the suggested watches cheaper elsewhere than Amazon usually.

u/Amesb34r · 2 pointsr/Watches

I love my Eco-Drive! My wife gave it to me as a birthday gift a few years ago and I've worn it almost every day since. I've had to replace the band but the watch is bulletproof. Keeps time perfectly. I set it to my cell phone clock a long time ago and it's dead on whenever I check it. THIS is the model that I have.

I'm looking to buy a watch that I can use everyday -formal,casual setting with minimal maintenance. I haven't used a watch in years so there may be times when I won't use a watch. If I might make a recommendation, check out the Citizen Eco Drive - either this model or this slightly larger model with more dials.

Pair it up with a nice NATO strap (buy several different colors, still under $200) and swap them out based on how you're feeling.

u/J_F_Sebastian · 1 pointr/Watches

Thanks. I think I have pretty much given up on automatics for now, at least for a daily wear watch. I did some maths: based on my age, life expectancy statistics published by my government, the fact that I seem to get maybe 2.5 years out of a cheap $15 Casio digital before the plastic lugs break, and allowing for 2 unexpected re-purchases due to loss, theft, house fire, whatever, if I just keep buying Casios for the rest of my life I'm looking at $320. If I get an automatic and service it only every 10 years (which I understand is less often than ideal), and the services only ever cost $100 (which I understand is on the cheaper side), then an automatic is going to cost me a lot more than $320 over my life (unless I die 20 years early than expected, which I hopefully won't!). Even the services alone would cost more than the Casios, and that's ignoring the cost of the watch in the first place!

So if I'm going to switch from cheap Casios, it'll be for something quartz. To make a fair comparison I need to expect to buy 3 nicer watches (the first one, plus the two contingencies for loss/theft/fire). My budget is then $107 per watch and each watch needs to be able to last on average 17 years. That $107 needs to cover the watch and things like battery replacement, it's total cost of ownership. This is difficult, but not impossible: this Eco-drive I would trust to do it, if I treated it carefully, and it is a nice looking watch. I also admire the technology in it: I love that if it doesn't get light for a long time, it shuts down the mechanical part that drives the hands and date to save power, but keeps the quartz oscillator running in a lower power mode. Once it comes out of storage, it wakes the mechanics up and runs them fast/slow for a while until it drifts back into sync with the quartz. That's really sexy (for me).

However, I use my Casio's stopwatch very regularly, to keep track of e.g. how long the French press coffee I make at work every day has been brewing, or how long it's been since I started a drier running at the laundromat. Being able to just start a stopwatch going is much more convenient than remembering the time I started it and doing arithmetic every time I look at my watch. That Citizen, lovely as it is, would force me to use my memory and do arithmetic. It's not like I'm lazy or stupid, but the reason I wear a watch at all in this day and age is for convenience, and the Citizen would simply be less convenient than my Casios.

Now, if I could find a $107 watch that I could trust to last 17 years which has either a chronograph or a rotating diver's bezel, I think the switch would not cause me to lose too much convenience. Well, I'd lose the perpetual calendar that all digis come with, but that would annoy me 7 times a year, instead of many times per week, so I could live with it. But that is a real challenge, getting that much watch for that price. I'm also worried that analogue chronographs are just inherently impractical: there will be times of day where the hour/minute hand obscure my view of the chronograph hands and I won't be able to read it, which is the kind of thing that would really bug me (obvious placement of form over functionality in a utilitarian device drives me crazy).

It's insane how hard it is to beat a dirt cheap digital watch in terms of time-keeping bang per buck. The only upgrade that seems to make sense for me is to get a G-shock, which I can imagine lasting 17 years and can definitely come under my budget, even with battery changes. However, again, I use my stopwatch all the time, and the stopwatch reset button on G-shocks is almost always deeply recessed to lie flush with the case, making it very hard to operate. If I have to struggle with the edge of my fingernail or a pen to use my stopwatch, I may as well just use my damn cell phone.

Yes, I'm probably drastically over-thinking things, but I kind of enjoy taking a hyper-rational approach to little things like this (yeah, yeah, I'd be a lot of fun at parties. If I went to them). It means that if/when I actually buy a nice watch, I can be totally secure that I made the right choice for my situation, so I can't really regret my decision if I see a different really sexy watch later down the line.

Sorry for the gigantic reply. I've been thinking about this a lot lately.

If you're going for a 1940s look, I'd recommend a leather or canvas band, which are harder to find in Wal-Mart, Target, etc. If you go to a jewelry store, you'll pay ridiculous prices. If you're open to buying online, here are a few quick recommendations from Amazon:

u/Kylo-renaldi · 1 pointr/Watches

You could get the citizen BM8 180-03E which is solar powered, with a date and day compilation. It usually sells for ~100 bucks but there's pretty good deals on amazon.
There's also a variant that comes with a chronograph.

Alternatively if you want to go with a classier looking watch you should check out the hamilton khaki field, but it's mechanical. They usually sell for ~350 on jomashop with a manual version available for ~260 but that movement isn't as reliable as the automatic one.

I have to agree with u/dat0dat regarding the Citizen BM8180-03E. It's under $100, Eco-Drive, and a very solid offering.

Without looking well above your budget into Hamilton's various field watches, I can only think of the Orient flight. Obviously, it's not a field watch, but at this point field, pilot, and military style watches overlap quite a bit. I'd take a look at it for sure. Just under budget with an automatic movement.

Good luck on the search.

u/shinbr · 1 pointr/Watches

That may be pushing it a bit... 38 is probably around the best size for you. I recommend going to the store and trying on a 42 mm watch to get a feel for the scale of the watch. It could be perfectly fine. Citizen also has smaller watches in the same style and Seiko has an automatic field watch for just around $50.

Recommend me a watch as a new pilot in the airline industry:

Most pilots have some kind of watch on, I'm trying to graduate from wrist bracelets go a grown up watch. I used to rock the Citizen Eco 37mm that I really liked, the size was just right and the style was simple and classic. Never worn a steel clasp wrist but would consider it if I could find the right one.

I'm flying with captains that are older than me so it could be a nice ice breaker when they see me reach for controls etc. My wrist is small however so I don't know what would be a good fit. Budget is around $300 I'd like it to show at least the date, stopwatch function would be cool too but not important.

2 Timex Weekenders or 1 Seiko 5 OR Citizen Eco-Drive Canvas Strap OR something else entirely? My only watch is a G-Shock.

u/greatkio · 1 pointr/Watches

This is similar enough that it might scratch your itch for cheap.

u/xxsarahxx · 1 pointr/Watches

Hello! My boyfriend is moving away, and I'm trying to get him a parting/birthday gift. I really love the look of a blue face + brown leather band, but the Citizen face that I wanted isn't available anywhere. My question is, can I buy this watch and replace the silver with a leather band? Or should I play it safe and just buy one without modifying- I was thinking this. Thanks!!!

u/Ace2021 · 1 pointr/Watches

My vote goes to the Citizen BM8180.

Amazon Link here.

Pros:

  • 37mm case
  • Eco-drive quartz (solar charging, don’t have to worry about battery)
  • 100m Water Resistant so you don’t have to be scared of submersion
  • Can be dressed up or down with different straps due to polished case and timeless design
  • Low cost (relatively)
  • Good lume at price point

    Cons:
  • mineral crystal (scratches can be buffed out though)
  • stock strap isn’t that good in my opinion

This watch gets almost as much wrist time as my other more expensive pieces, and maintains great accuracy. It does everything well, but nothing spectacular I would say. Here is a video review as well.
u/jollygaggin · 1 pointr/Watches

First time watch buyer here. I'm stuck between the Seiko 5 SNKE03 and the Citizen BM8180. Can anyone give me reviews or opinions for either of these? If it makes any difference, I'm planning on replacing the band with a black NATO strap.

Thanks in advance, sorry if this isn't the right place to ask this.

u/LeviathanDivine · 1 pointr/Watches

I have this one. But I also didn't like the strap that much so I got this.
But any 18mm band will work for it so you have many options.

u/speekeazy · 1 pointr/Watches

So I grabbed this weekender years ago as a whatever happens happens watch https://smile.amazon.com/Timex-Unisex-T2N651-Weekender-Slip-Thru/dp/B004VR9HP2/ref=sr_1_1?s=apparel&ie=UTF8&qid=1491660639&sr=1-1&nodeID=7141123011&psd=1&keywords=timex+weekender
and its been GREAT but I think now its time to upgrade. Id like to spend less than $400 and i'm staying away from movement charged automatics. I had a seiko 5 and was setting it all the time. Im leaning towards https://smile.amazon.com/Citizen-BM8180-03E-Eco-Drive-Analog-Japanese/dp/B000EQS1JW/ref=sr_1_1?s=apparel&ie=UTF8&qid=1491660895&sr=1-1&nodeID=7141123011&psd=1&keywords=citizen+eco+drive but seeing as how this will be my new daily driver Im open to spending more for a much better watch (within reason). Thank you guys a million fold for any suggestions and for this sub in general. Its awesome

u/Just__The__Tip · 1 pointr/Watches

Also, some kind of respectable water resistance, which is the sole reason why I'm starting to lean away from the Seiko 5 and towards this citizen

u/Bells_DX · 1 pointr/Watches

So I'm a bit of a newbie to watches and I figure a good way to start my collection is with a Citizen Eco-Drive, however, I'm really not liking the strap in terms of aesthetics or in terms of functionality. With the leathery underside, I'm concerned that it'll get sticky when wet like my current no name Walmart watch with a faux leather strap.

With this in mind, I've decided to look into getting an aftermarket metal bracelet for it, but my question is: how do I know what's decent and where should I buy it from?

I've heard that solid links are better than folded links, so I'd like to find a solid one, but what else is there aside from making sure it fits my watch? I see a couple "solid link" bracelets on Amazon for $20, but can I trust those to be any good? I'd prefer to spend around $100 or less, but is that a reasonable price for a quality bracelet?

u/DaBlueCaboose · 1 pointr/Watches

As far as solar watches, I've had this Citizen watch for a few years, and it's decently rugged, pretty simple, and good looking. Would recommend.

u/HD_piss_jugs · 1 pointr/Watches

Context, budget, and desired features
I am a mid thirties dad, with a desk job in the maintenance field. I work with my hands very frequently, am outdoors a lot and I normally dress casually. I will wear colored shirts once in a while, and often wear jeans or khaki shorts. I have a fossil watch with a bracelet that I got as a gift about 10 years ogo and quickly stopped wearing it after I got a cell phone. I'm sick and tired of pulling my phone out and being chained to it. I tried a smart watch, but I'd much rather live a simpler life with my EDC. I would like a watch for every single day, in the future, I could see getting a piece with more bling for dressier occasions. My budget is up to $300, but I'd rather be around $200, so that I'm not too hurt if it gets broken or lost.

Movements
As of now I am gravitating to non battery operated due to the cost of battery replacement with a water resistant model costing $70 to keep the guarantee. I realize that I can do it myself most likely, but I want a quality piece, and don't want to mess it up.
I don't mind solar.
Romantically I want a auto, but would prefer one with a winder also.
I'm worried that I would forget to wind a mechanical.

Size
My wrist is around 8 1/4 inch. I prefer a 38-42 mm.

Wanted features
Black dial
A simple face that is not busy
Replaceable strap
Date
Sapphire crystal
Brushed, not polished body
I'm not sure how bracelets work, I don't mind as long as it can be switched out to a nato.
*A black body would be nice, but I'm concerned about the looks of scratches showing though.

What I have looked at
Timex Men's T49961 "Expedition Scout"
I like the looks of this watch a lot, but the overall quality is lacking.

SEIKO 5 SNZG15J1
The only thing that I don't like about this piece is that the numbers are not placed at the outside edge near the bezel.

Citizen Eco-Drive BM8475-26E
I'm not a fan of the large numbers and the painted body will not likely hold up.

Citizen Men's BM8180-03E Eco-Drive
I really love this piece other than the polished body

Hamilton Khaki field HML-H69419363
This is a front runner other than being on the small side of my preference and me forgetting to wind it.

Hamilton Khaki Field Auto #H70555533
This I like, although I would need to buy used.

Are there any other that you can recommend? The only place that I've really looked is Amazon. I cant seem to find a better retailer.

u/skyleth · 1 pointr/Watches

all automatics will gain or lose some time, I have an SNK809 and it doesn't really gain/lose enough bother me, I check it and adjust it maybe once a month, if that? but if you're going to be banging it around, I'd say a quality quartz like the timex you mentioned would be the way to go.

I might also look into the solar powered Citizen BM8180-03E. Doesn't look like much from Casio or Seiko in the quartz department with arabic numerals all the way around.

u/dan_blather · 1 pointr/Watchexchange

As the thread title says, I'm selling a Citizen BM8180-03E Eco-Drive watch. Despite being about three years old, it's very lightly used; I'd say a 9+/10. The second hand strikes exactly on mark. I love the flieger-like face, but I very seldom wore it; with a diameter of 37mm, it looks quite small on my wrist. I'm also including the original box.

The BM8180-03E seems to have a small following on /r/watches, and it earned hundreds of excellent reviews on Amazon.

$75 (Paypal), with free shipping from 14850 (Upstate NY). Sorry, but US only; I really don't want to deal with customs declarations and the like.

EDIT: $65 firm.

u/luckynumberpi · 1 pointr/Watches

Repost from an old comment of mine, but still relevant.

I originally got started with a Citizen Eco-Drive chrono. Mine still runs after 10+ years, and looks great on a black leather strap with white stitching.

It's solar powered, and Citizen's solar tech is crazy good. After a year in a box it starts ticking the moment it comes out, and with regular exposure to light it'll just keep going. No battery changes needed, and it has quartz precision. Like I said, mine is over 10 years old.

That's where I recommend starting – simple, hands-off operation. Only once you've started to develop a budget and a more genuine appreciation should you venture into the land of automatics. Going to college you definitely want to be on time, and you don't want to have to care about setting the watch every time you don't wear it for a few days.

Though I don't own any myself, Timex is a reputable low-cost vendor to consider as well. Their Expedition series is nice, as well as the some what odd Flyback. If you happen to be into pure digitals, then Casio is the king.

u/InternationalAir3 · 1 pointr/Watches

Haha thanks I defintely know to stay away from the fashion watches. I cant really find any automatic watches with a simple face that is kinda lowkey so I can wear it with sweats if I have to. I am thinking of this with a different band:

u/ninjamike808 · 1 pointr/Watches

You'll probably love that watch, it's very lightweight, so after a short while, you'll forget it's on your arm.

I really like this style of watch. It's a manual wind, which is old school, but I like the skeleton/ open heart style.

This is a bit flashier, so you might not want to wear it to too formal of an event.

An everyday watch that is rather plain. There's also a chronograph version, too, if you feel like timing stuff.

Here' an eco-drive, titanium watch that barely meets your dress watch budget. Some people would wear something like this as a dress watch, but I'm not sure if you would...

I didn't even know Seiko Kinetics got that cheap, and I'm not sure if that's too big for you, but it looks good.

Personally, if it's quartz, I don't really care for it, but this Seiko is nice. The thing about quartz is that it just won't last, but at $60, you can replace it.

If you don't like any of these, I think they're a good start and could lead you to find something that you'll love. That's one thing about watches, you should make sure you love it, especially if it's an automatic. Some one put a lot of time into it. Now, these Seikos, Orients and Bulovas aren't hand made, and might not have original movements (well Orient does) but they're artwork. You don't just throw art on your wall, you pick something meaningful. The guy who throws art on his wall is the same guy who throws an ugly watch on his wrist, or an expensive watch that has no business being as expensive as it is.

u/arafella · 1 pointr/BuyItForLife

I'm a bit late, but if you prefer an analog watch I'd suggest this Citizen, it's solar powered so you'll never have to mess with batteries, water resistant to 100m (mine is actually WR to this depth), and there's no ticking noise. They frequently can be found on sale for ~$75 on amazon.

u/iPodAddict181 · 1 pointr/malefashionadvice

Why would you buy a Timex for $150? I'd probably go for a Citizen, a Bulova, or a Skagen (which are 1000x better watches at 1/2 the cost) and then spend the remaining on a cool little wallet or one of these badass key fobs.

u/Mahogany9 · 1 pointr/Watches

If it was a showdown between Seiko and Citizen, I'd say Citizen only because they've been doing it longer. I think? Either way. $101 EcoDrive with a WR100 rating. This could be your only watch.

http://www.amazon.com/Citizen-BM8180-03E-Eco-Drive-Canvas-Strap/dp/B000EQS1JW/ref=sr_1_39?s=watches&ie=UTF8&qid=1397077628&sr=1-39&keywords=eco+drive+titanium

Furthermore, the red second hand will help you with taking heart rates because it's really easy to see. Also had an arrow on its end. You could always get a rubber band elsewhere. I think you'd prefer rubber over steel because it won't slide on your wrist (you won't get distracted when you're using your hands to do important stuff" and you won't get fluids in between the links. With the watch I showed you and a rubber strap, you could wash the whole thing under a tap without worry .

u/AKADriver · 1 pointr/Skookum

I bought this guy about 4 years ago and have pretty much worn it every day since. A couple scratches on the crystal because I tend to be pretty clumsy with it, but the original nylon band is still completely intact.

That depends on how you're going to wear a watch. There are some casual ones with great aesthetics such as Citizen, Seiko, and the MFA famous Timex.

u/thisisnotaboutagirl · 1 pointr/Watches

I'm looking for a pilot style watch at at most $1,000 that looks like this Archimede Pilot 39 but with incremental 5 minute markings on the chapter ring (like this Citizen). I don't like type B Fliegers because they look too busy to me.

I'd also like it to be lumed, have a date, large crown (preferably onion or diamond), and have the large Flieger hands.

u/MinuteOfAngle · 1 pointr/Watches

I see you already settled on a choice, but this Citizen M8180-03E Eco-Drive is smaller than the other Citizen watch you posted and has smaller numbers. I have one as a camping beater sort of watch and it still looks nice enough to wear as a casual watch too if you put a different strap on it.

u/OneLegAtATime · 1 pointr/frugalmalefashion

"leather" and "shower"? huh…

The way I see it, the competition you face at this price point is the SNK809, along with many other Seiko watches in the <$70. What you seem to be going after is the Mondaine/Stowa bauhaus look, which doesn't quite exist at that price point.

The closest watch to that styling, at a value I would purchase, is most likely the Rodina. If you've done your research, I"m sure you've seen it. As a watch nerd, the automatic is a big plus for me… but otherwise, it stands out as being "unique at the price point" as well as subtle and slightly retro. Personally I find both of the watches you posted to be displeasing to the eye. The MVMT has a horribly gaudy branding, while the second watch takes minimalism a bit too far. You want something with a fit/finish that captures attention, while at the same time being uncluttered and basic. And you want to do all that without it looking like a Nomos.

Another thing to consider, when thinking about watch value, is the longevity of the product. Seiko 5's can easily last 5-10 years. My dad has been rocking the same seiko quartz $100 diver for the past 20. Can you manufacture that level of durability and value in your product? This may entail some features like a screw-down crown, for instance.

What makes the purchase of your watch better than getting a $100 watch that won't need a battery change in your lifetime? Frugality isn't always "buying cheaper", to some degree you DO pay for durability with your $100 watches that you don't get with your $50 fashion watches.

u/-CharlesHardinHolley · 1 pointr/frugalmalefashion

Part with an additional fiver and you can get this. CITIZEN's Eco-Drive movements are terrific and available in a dizzying array of styles/models.

I actually have the chronograph version of this watch, and I adore the thing.

CITIZEN estimates that after twenty years, the capacitor in their Eco-Drive movements will still hold an 80% charge. Impressive.

But, 91 bucks for a regular old quartz watch? No. There is certainly better value to be had.

Hell, in that price neighborhood, I'd recommend a VOSTOK Amfibia. They are inexpensive, accurate enough (mine gains about eight seconds a day), unusual (people ask me what the hell is that on my wrist regularly), and has genuine horological importance.

Just my two-cents.

I would think that you could wear a lot of watches with a leather or stainless steel bracelet with a suit. I tend to go conservative in my style in a suit, so I wouldn't watch that has a very busy dial.

Right now it's $101 on amazon (and routinely goes down to less than $90 according to camelcamelcamel) and would cost about $80 if you add in the 20% discount with the sign up thing, plus free shipping.

Even if you get it down to $72 on Massdrop, once you factor in another $6 for their shipping, and it's not much of a deal.

"High quality" and "$0 to $100 range" don't normally go together.

The Seiko 8180 will be your best bet.
