Citizen Men's BM8240-03E Eco-Drive

Description: A classy looking Eco-Drive for a great price. Citizen has a great reputation for quality watches. This particular one is my 3rd, and they are all fantastic. They're comfortable, keep great time, and use no battery. What more could you want?

u/Ubel · 10 pointsr/malefashionadvice

I absolutely love the style of that watch but as someone else with thin wrists, I could never wear it.

I wear a 36mm Citizen Eco-Drive and that's pretty damn close to my limit..

Also I must say I really recommend that watch for under $100 as being a well made stylish watch.

And it's SOLAR POWERED and even after 20 years the specially designed lithium battery inside with still retain 80% of it's original capacity. It will work in complete darkness for 180 days before dying.
Also 12 hours of sunlight is enough to power it for something like an entire week in complete darkness. It's insanely efficient.

I don't even go outside often and it charges so well from ambient light that I've never had the battery go low. Eco Drives are amazing watches and I highly recommend them for anyone that wants something that pretty much never needs maintenance.

(I've heard having seals changed every few years is good for ensuring water resistance though)

I know I sound like a Citizen salesmen or something, but I'm just an honestly impressed 22 year old who loves the hell out of the first good watch he bought.

u/JoCoLaRedux · 8 pointsr/Watches

Someone already mentioned Seiko 5, and the Seiko 5 finder will give you a lot of options.

Aside from that, I'd check out Citizen. They make good watches, many with 5 year warranties:

BF0580-06E

BI1030-53E

BM8240-03E

BM8475-26E

They might cost you a little more depending on the model, they're well worth it. The Eco drives are an excellent value, powered by light and expected to run at 80% capacity after 20 years, and when fully charged, can keep on ticking after being left in a dark drawer for up to six months.

u/SPAS115 · 6 pointsr/Watches

I found this Citizen, but it is unfortunately out of your budget, although it has been had at $205.

Another option: Timex $66

Another: Seiko $119

Dressier options: Citizen $147

Another Citizen (This one can be had at $80, but is currently $130)

Orient $158

If your willing to go with a cleaner dial with no chronograph you can look at the Rodina lineup for $120. If you are willing to ditch the black dial you can look at Tisell, with the options of a polished stainless steel or PVD coated case and a higher quality movement over the Rodina at $170 or $180, respectively. Currently sold out, though.

Hope this helps!

(Edited in dressier options and forgot to mention that my suggested watches that come with a leather strap will probably need a better strap because the stock ones are of poor quality. You will need a tool to remove the stock straps. Tutorial)

You can absolutely get a decent watch for $100. At that budget I would concentrate on the brands; Casio, Timex, Citizen, Orient and Seiko. Between them, these brands make a huge variety of styles and you should be able to find something that you like. Mechanical watches have some advantages, but you are probably better off with a quartz watch. Quartz watches are cheaper, more rugged, significantly more accurate and generally less hassle overall.

Some recommendations...

Timex Fairfield

Orient Bambino

Citizen Eco Drive

u/silasmoon · 5 pointsr/malefashionadvice

I have a rule, which is, if I am going to spend over $150 on a watch it better well damn have a sapphire face. There are some shit brands out there (Sturhling, Skagen, Invicta) that make watches with sapphire faces for like $200, but usually you are going to have to spend more.

I feel like watches between $150 - $300 are usually not worth it. It's sort of go big or go home. I say this as someone who has tossed a lot of banged up mineral face watches from, Sturhling, Invicta, Citizen, Skagen, etc. (before I knew better). I've also paid a lot of money to have mechanical watches repaired.

I just bought this Citizen. And absolutely love it so far.

Ninja Edit: It is a very nice looking watch though!

Double Secret Ninja Edit: Here is a comparable Citizen in terms of looks

u/infinite_ideation · 4 pointsr/malefashionadvice

It's probably the most overstated watch on this forum, not that it's a bad thing.

I'd prefer

Bulova

or

Citizen

watches over Timex. These aren't time pieces, but they certainly represent the style very well.

u/BigMoufPosy · 3 pointsr/Watches

Maybe this?

36mm is a good size if you have skinny wrists, and it looks fairly dressy but the day/date complication might be a bit in the way. Also solar powered FWIW.

u/abronia · 3 pointsr/Watches

There's nothing wrong with a quartz watch. If you want something as low-maintenance as possible, I would suggest looking at a Citizen Eco-Drive or one of the Seiko Solar models. Though it may be a bit above your budget, perhaps something like this Citizen would work well.

u/vocabularylessons · 3 pointsr/malefashionadvice

To echo the other comment: with regard to watches, you get what you pay for.

I'm not sure what sort of watch you're interested in, but the Seiko 5 automatics are pretty much the best bang for your buck. As far as entry-level watches go, I personally like this Citizen eco-drive the best.

u/[deleted] · 3 pointsr/Watches

maybe this? or even this one here...

u/Schoffleine · 3 pointsr/AskMen

I got this watch for myself a few years ago. It may be too...sleek(?) for an older man, but I absolutely love it. It's simple in design and looks great IMO. I got a different band for it which cost me an additional $30.

Plus, you don't have to worry about batteries with it. The dial is a solar cell.

u/timmythetoole · 2 pointsr/Watches

The problem is that every other Seiko 5 in your price range had a metal strap - https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B0058VJWTQ this would be ideal otherwise i think

I'm taking your requirement for it to last at hand so if I can't find an automatic, what about solar powered like https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B000EQS1D8 or https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B0043ZXIY8

u/faulks · 2 pointsr/femalefashionadvice

[Edit] Looking back at this, the model on that page is totally a female and is owning that watch. Maybe you should just get the one you really like and rock it!

I strayed a bit in terms of style but I didn't know what exactly you liked about the original. All are <=40mm. The ones with prices are <$200 but a couple didn't have a price listed, so you'd probably have to check those out.

K thanks, had fun, hope I helped lol.

u/ted_d · 2 pointsr/Watches

Well if you like the timex this is not a bad choice and about half the price. This solar watch is another option.

u/skipsmagee · 2 pointsr/Watches

From what I've seen, Stuhrling has a reputation of being sub-par, hyped, and inflated. For a quality yet budget-friendly dress watch, might I recommend the

  • Citizen Eco-Drive BM8240-03E, $100, with a black face and black leather band. Eco-Drives are solar-charged quartz and can run for months even in a sock drawer. They are reasonably durable, and I own several models. Or if you're set on a metal bracelet, you could try the

  • Seiko Solar SNE039, $90, also a solar-charged quartz;
  • Seiko 5 SNK793, $60, an automatic that charges by the movement on your wrist, but only stores enough power for 40 hours; or the
  • Seiko Kinetic SMY111, $120, which uses a swinging rotor like an automatic to charge a battery that runs a quartz movement. It has a longer power reserve than an automatic, and is probably worth the extra money than that Seiko 5 SNK793.
u/Toasterferret · 2 pointsr/malefashionadvice

I too have small wrists, so I look for watches with a case size around 38mm, 40mm maximum. Something like this works great: http://www.amazon.com/Citizen-BM8240-03E-Eco-Drive-Black-Leather/dp/B000EQS1D8/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_nS?ie=UTF8&coliid=I2NVK9G5JWP4W6&colid=1110Q0G7APGL7

u/S2S2S2S2S2 · 2 pointsr/Watches

To build on what Coffeeshopman said, if you're going to invest a hundred dollars, it may as well be a hundred well spent. The brands they listed are all Japanese and offer a good value of reasonably well made watches at lower price points. Citizen may interest you in particular as their Eco-Drive watches run off of batteries which are recharged from sunlight and artificial light, requiring very little maintenance.

Furthermore, you may need to investigate what kind of watch you want ( e.g., quartz vs. automatic, which is to say, battery-operated vs. self-winding mechanical gear operated) and what features you would like (some watches you linked have a chronograph / stopwatch for measuring elapsed time). There are pros and cons to these things, but most people on this subreddit heavily favor automatic watches.

Based on these ideas and your aesthetic guidelines, I've pasted a number of links below. I hope they are of some use to you. You will note that Casio is absent. This is merely because they are better known for watches that are more sporty in design and which are typically digital.

It's a lot of money for a quartz watch. You're paying a lot of money to have Armani written on your watch. The Orient bambino in black is around the same price, but is mechanical (40mm):

http://wornandwound.com/2012/08/29/review-orient-bambino-er24004b/

http://www.amazon.com/Orient-ER24004B-Bambino-Automatic-Mechanical/dp/B008VBUZDW

This Citizen is roughly the same look, but is solar, so you won't have to worry about battery changes for a while (37mm):

www.amazon.com/Citizen-BM8240-03E-Eco-Drive-Stainless-Leather/dp/B000EQS1D8/

Seiko has a similar solar (37mm): www.amazon.com/Seiko-SNE049-Stainless-Steel-Solar/dp/B004400ZCK/

42mm can be big, depending on your build/wrist, though big is 'in' right now.

You say you like technology, I have a Citizen Nighthawk which I like. It's big, and the dial can be a bit busy: http://www.jomashop.com/citizen-bj7000-52e.html

What about chronographs? (Stopwatches)

u/oxg · 2 pointsr/Watches

It really depends on what you're looking for in a watch. If you're looking for a nice dress watch around that price point, I would recommend looking in to this Citizen.

I personally don't really like the second watch as much but you should go for it if you like it. The Seiko 5 and this Citizen are some of my recommendations for entry level watches.

It's flashy and I'd avoid buying it. Here are some similar options.

u/Kong288 · 2 pointsr/Watches

I have a question about the place where it tells the day. Does the letters slowly disappear though the day? Or after 12am it moves real quick for the new day? In other words, if it was like 8 pm, would the "MON" be half way off the display, and "TUES" would be halfway on the screen?

Also, is this a good watch from Citizen? http://www.amazon.com/Citizen-BM8240-03E-Eco-Drive-Stainless-Leather/dp/B000EQS1D8/ref=pd_sbs_a_2?ie=UTF8&refRID=14JKZP2SZS04EGGS5S3R

It may help if you more specifically define your budget. However, here are a couple shots in the dark for you -

Citizen BM8180-03E Eco-Drive

Citizen BM8240-03E Eco-Drive

That second one comes with a reptile pattern leather strap, but would look great on a nato strap (and may even take the same strap from your Weekender).

u/descafeinado · 2 pointsr/Watches

I'd go with the Mako to wear on a day-by-day basis. It's a surprisingly good beater. It's durable, keeps excellent time, -- mine has settled down at about +4 a day -- and it looks fantastic with anything less formal than a suit. (As I recall, you can get a Mako off Amazon for about $125 or so.)

I'd use the balance to get a solar-powered quartz dress watch. Something like this is good, because you're not going to be wearing it on a daily basis anyway, and it's a huge hassle to keep resetting a mechanical.

u/Whalesnshit · 2 pointsr/EDC

Bought it on Amazon here.

u/STP_EMT · 2 pointsr/malefashionadvice

This Bulova would fit what you're looking at pretty well. It is a quartz, but the only reason to get a mechanical watch is if you truly have an interest for one as in actuality, a quartz watch is generally, but not always, more accurate.

Also this Citizen watch might work, however, it has a black face.

Both brands are of good quality and are recommended on /r/watches frequently.

u/jasonpatrick · 2 pointsr/malefashionadvice

I would try something more durable and lasting like this Citizen Eco drive

u/Devataa · 2 pointsr/Watches

Sorry in advance, the images are out of order and repeat.

Was in India when I bought the Titan. Had instant Buyer's remorse because my heart was actually dedicated to the other Titan of the same edge series found here. Only the one shown here is rose gold but the one I wanted in the show room was all black (shiny black instead of rose gold so watch was thin as a razor's edge blacked out. Never could find an image of that exact watch anywhere on the internet nor have I come across it since.) Anyways, Since it was a gift (bought) by my grandmother, I wasn't going to complain. This titan watch is the nicest watch I own and thus have only worn it 7 times... :-s The strap on this watch is such nice quality. I'm half considering to sell this watch off because I just don't wear it enough!

The citizen Ecodrive I bought at duty free when I was on an Alaska cruise. This was/is my daily watch until I got the Luch just a month ago. Durable, extremly light, simple design and has date and day which I find to be extremely useful. Never have to worry about winding/charge/ battery because the whole face is a solarpanal. for $100 2 years ago, I thought it was a bargain. Wore it every single day, absolutely love it. The strap is getting well worn down, any suggestions would be appreciated. Was thinking about going for a dark/deep brown leather strap of sort.

Lastly, my Luch russian watch, mechanical hand wound from the 70's I got recently from my girlfriend as a late valentine's gift. Was stalking a simple design JUST like this on e-bay forever and I wanted to buy a mechanical watch to add to my collection. Saw this on the listing and absolutely fell in love. With a price $60 shipping from Ukrain, I thought it very reasonable. Never did see the exact same watch listed again (especially not in this quality). I don't even know the precise model of this watch. I expected to get ripped off and get a non functional partially broken mechanical watch but it works like a charm and keeps time well (as far as I can tell). Though I'm not sure how many turns I'm supposed to wind it so I know I under-wind the watch thus have to keep up with it more frequently. Still new to mechanical watch care/ maintenance. However, this is my daily watch now, unless I'm getting dirty or wet, I use my Citizen.

That's all I got, these 3 watches. Hopefully my collection will grow over time. Cheers.

u/Devvils · 2 pointsr/Watches

I dress watch has a plain face, no complications, often no date, leather band, often under 38mm.

Hello!

I just recently bought a watch after researching for a couple of week, so I can share my "research" with you. Some things to note, my budget was about half of yours, and my taste tends to lean towards more minimal watches. anyway:

There are several Citizen watches that are wonderful. However, they are slightly out of your range.

here's one similar to one I own

heres a dressier watch more like what you posted

But may I suggest a Timex Weekender in your favorite color strap. Being in high school, this is much more budget friendly - aka cheaper than dirt.

Thank you for the detailed post on buying guide , $0 to $250. I have hardly used any watches before. Based on the guide I have decided to buy a Quartz watch. My budget is $100. Help me decide a watch from the list below. Thanks.

I'm looking to buy a watch that I can use everyday -formal,casual setting with minimal maintenance. I haven't used a watch in years so there may be times when I won't use a watch. Based on the buying guide, I feel a Quartz watch may be better suited for me than an Automatic. I can't really finalize a watch from the list. Your advice/recommendations will help!

u/GhostOfSargasso · 1 pointr/Watches

I'll let others answer about the Omega.

From where I'm sitting, though, if he doesn't really care about watches that much, then keeping the right time will likely be more important than having an Omega on his wrist. To that end, I'd get something like a Citizen Eco-drive -- it's solar-powered quartz, so you'll never need to replace the battery (since there is no battery). They come in a few classy styles (here and here for example).

u/kingviper · 1 pointr/malefashionadvice

I also have small wrists and avoided watches. GF's parent's got me this watch for xmas and I really like it. I have to tighten it down to the last notch but it fits great. Doesn't need batteries either!

u/moises_ph · 1 pointr/Watches

I love my Eco-drive. If you don't have a preference as to the movement, the Eco-drive is pretty great and low maintenance: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Citizen-Eco-Drive-Black-Leather-BM8240-03E/dp/B000EQS1D8/ref=sr_1_7?ie=UTF8&qid=1369674026&sr=8-7&keywords=citizen+eco+drive+mens+watches

if you prefer a bracelet over leather straps, seiko always delivers. http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=sr_nr_p_36_1?rh=n%3A377110011%2Ck%3Aseiko%2Cp_36%3A386701011&bbn=377110011&keywords=seiko&ie=UTF8&qid=1369674617&rnid=386698011

Personally i'd pick the eco-drive, because if you are going to go quartz, might as well have one where you will never need to replace the battery.

If you're going for a 1940s look, I'd recommend a leather or canvas band, which are harder to find in Wal-Mart, Target, etc. If you go to a jewelry store, you'll pay ridiculous prices. If you're open to buying online, here are a few quick recommendations from Amazon:

Orient Bambino

Bulova 96A102

Citizen Men's BM8180-03E

u/AurorionWing · 1 pointr/Watches

I'll do my best to describe my tastes, but please do tell me if my choices in watches are bad (I may have poor taste):

I like simple, easy-to-read watches (not too many complications) with clean designs.
Not a fan of nylon or straps, with slight preference of leather over metal straps.

Besides The Citizen and Skagen, other watches I think are pretty neat are:

u/ZestySushi · 1 pointr/Watches

I'm guessing you don't mind nor necessarily know whether or not he would prefer a quartz or mechanical?

In any case, Citizen and Seiko are always a good bet for quality. I know most of the Citizen watches can look sportier but there are some quartz that are still classy looking such as this eco drive (meaning he doesn't have to get the battery changed).

If you are willing to go a little bit above 200$, here's a quartz Tissot white dial with a gold bezel and brown leather you asked for in the other comment. It's over your budget but Tissot is a good brand and is definitely going to be better built and have a better movement than a Daniel Wellington.

I'm deciding between 2 Citizen Eco-Drive watches. This stainless steel one with a black leather strap and this gold one with a brown leather strap.

I'm looking for a watch that I can wear both to work and for casual outings. I really like the color of the gold one but I think it may be too flashy for me. What do guys think?

u/Arcs_Of_A_Jar · 1 pointr/malefashionadvice

Some basic characteristics of the most everyday watch you can get: no flashiness, silver-colored metal only if there's any metal, simplicity in design, lightweight, and any kind of band except black leather.

Some of MFA's most often mentioned basics: The Timex Weekender, the Timex Easy Reader, and Citizen Eco Drive(you would probably want to replace the black watch band with a brown leather one).

You're not limited to these, however. Some personal favorites are the Orient Sky, the Orient Union, Skagen, and Seiko.

Don't take my examples as a firm limitation, however, there's literally hundreds of good watches out there.

I expanded my list a little

Definitely looking at the Invicta 8932OB Pro Diver quartz, Seiko Men's SNE049, Seiko Men's SNE045 Solar, and Citizen Men's BM8240-03E Eco-Drive.

More interested in the quartz watches since they're generally thinner and cheaper. I'll buy a nice automatic down the road but for now this is supposed to be a cheaper watch to wear while working.

On the high side of your budget, and rubber strap, I really like the look of this Citizen Eco Drive.

Here is a lower priced Citizen but it has a leather band.

I know they're not exactly like the Skagen but maybe similar enough.

It's a Citizen Eco-Drive BM8240-03E that was originally my dad's but he doesn't wear it anymore. Affordable but I really like the look for a minimalist dress watch. It's now sitting on an aftermarket black leather deployant clasp (as the original leather band had broken down after years of use by my dad).

If it's within your price range, I'd recommend a Citizen Eco-Drive, such as this one (I know it's a bit small, but I'm using it as an example): https://www.amazon.co.uk/Citizen-Eco-Drive-Black-Leather-BM8240-03E/dp/B000EQS1D8/ref=pd_sbs_241_3?ie=UTF8&dpID=41AVSJXFY4L&dpSrc=sims&preST=_AC_UL160_SR84%2C160_&refRID=YP6NYRZQ38WKB6N4TWFG

The reason I suggest this is that it will allow you to avoid having to worry about changing batteries every couple of years, which will save you some headaches.

EDIT: Been informed that it actually is an Eco-drive...sorry, missed that in the listing. Please disregard.

Not too long ago I was in a similar predicament. It came down to the Seiko 5, this Citizen Eco-Drive, and some Timex watch. I eventually went with the Citizen, because I love simple faces, and am quite glad I did. Not sure if that's the style you're looking for, but it's very slick looking in person. I'm not a big fan of the strap, but I'll replace it eventually.

I have this black Citizen Eco-Drive watch.
Now that summer is coming I am thinking of changing the black leather strap to something more casual. Can a black faced watch work with nato straps? which color goes best with it? The black face is making it difficult.

Some additional watches in your price range that were not mentioned that have a timeless look:

Stuhrling White Dial/Black Strap

Skagen Black on Black

Citizen's Black on Black

Check Boccia, they make thin watches with tasteful design.

Citizen and Bulova quality thin watches at reasonable prices.
