While not anywhere close the comprehensiveness of Russell, this book was a great introduction to Eastern philosophy.
I got a lot out of how Kupperman sets the chapter progression out so as to show how the ideas developed and migrated. There is a clear migration of ideas outwards from India and Tibet through China and on to Japan. One can see how the Vedas influenced Buddhism, which left its mark on Daoism, Chan, and finally Zen Buddhism. There is even a chapter on the Bezels of Wisdom, which bridges the gap to the triumvirate of Judeo-Christian-Islamic basis for Western ideals.
Besides the chronology and web of ideas outlined within, Kupperman also relates Eastern philosophical notions to their Western counterparts. In some ways this dumbs down the non-dual nature of many eastern epiphanies, yet in other ways it allows the Western reader to find some common ground.
All in all, it was a good starting point, and led me to grab up a few of the texts, such as the Dhammapada, the Daodejing, the writings of Zhuangzi, among others.
