I know this may not be feasible for you at all, but about a year ago I invested in this, which is the one they used at the salon. I also got some better stuff for wax strips (like this). Those were both way, way easier to use than the kind of microwavable wax I've tried in the past, and the cloth strips made a big difference compared with the papery ones.

Technique gets better with time, but I've found if I take a couple acetaminophen first everything goes a lot smoother - you're less afraid of hurting yourself and so are able to take off the strips more effectively.

Also, clean the area first and then put baby powder on it. It keeps the wax from sticking to your skin too much and instead the wax will grab the hairs. Always push the strip down in the direction the hair is going and pull it off the opposite way. Focusing on smaller areas at once is usually more manageable.

And I just pluck my own eyebrows - above or below is fine. I don't like the idea of messing with wax on your eyebrows yourself; you're too likely to burn yourself or botch it up and then it's on your face for everyone to see.
