I reused my PSU and case and the Mobo and Processor were only slightly used (I swear when they came in they looked brand new).

RAM

Mobo

Graphics

Processor-for $90!!!

SSD-This thing was on sale for $70 when I got it

u/CW-Bulldog · 3 pointsr/buildapc

Sure, no problem.

16gb DDR3-1600 (standard stuff, practically guaranteed to be compatible with your mobo)

16gb DDR3-1866 (slightly faster and slightly cheaper!)

Edit: Replaced second link. Originally linked to incompatible memory, oops!

u/EyLuis · 3 pointsr/technology

Thanks for asking! I actually replaced my motherboard last friday with the exact motherboard listed above. It performs way better than my old pc mate, and has some options for fast booting too.

Here's an Amazon link for the MSI z97 gaming 5. (~$150)

For your ram I would double up and get 16GB of ram. 8GB is the standard at the moment, however with how cheap ram is getting it's no harm to start get your PC ready for the next couple of years.

Here's an Amazon link for 16GB of Corsair Vengeance DDR3 memory. (~$80)

And considering you have $500 left for the CPU, I would actually go with the Intel i7 4790k processor. You can't go wrong with it if you're looking for running games, plus it's good for multi-tasking, editing, rendering, etc.

Here's the Amazon link. (~$340)

I hope these suggestions help you! If you're looking for the same stuff, but centered around DDR4 ram, like that one guy suggested, just let me know!

Hi there! Newbie questions:

I have an ASUS P8Z77-V motherboard with an i7-3770K, 8gb of corsair ram and a Geforce GT 640. I'm looking to add more RAM and possibly a better graphics card. I was looking at this ram and was wondering if I could just stick this in along with the 8GB i already have? There are two spare slots for RAM so I'm guessing this is OK.

As for the graphics card, a lot of games run smoothly for me but more recent games just seem to have terrible FPS (namely The Evil Within; it is completely unplayable at max resolution with LOWEST graphics settings) - was wondering what graphics card people would recommend with a budget of £300 (~$470).

Thanks for any advice!

>Do you multitask while gaming (netflix, spotify, hulu)

If yes, keep the 16gb of ram, but i'd go with this. I've been using corsiar vengeance for almost 4 months now and it's kicking ass.

If no, then i'd downgrade to 8gb of ram, since most games only utilize 1-5gb and rarely take advantage of 8.

>Do you plan on steaming gameplay / editing video?

if yes, then powerraptor is right, the 4790k is faster for a tad bit more.

if no, then all you need is an i5. I've been using the i5-4690k overclocked at 4.0ghz and it blows through any task without stuttering.

IF you only get 8gb of ram, take that 70-100 dollars saved and put it into a gtx 770 or r9 290 instead of the 760.

u/durtydiq · 2 pointsr/hardwareswap

Memory might be a little high, can get a used set for 54 on amazon or 69 brand new.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B006EWUO22/ref=dp_olp_all_mbc?ie=UTF8&condition=all

u/llooggaann · 2 pointsr/pcmasterrace

If you're looking for new RAM, I'd just take the old stick out and replace it.

Well, 16GB isn't necessary, but it gives you a lot of headroom for the future. Also, you could make a large RAMDisk drive for faster loading times of some of your files.

If you only want 8GB, which is still more than enough even if you're a heavy gamer.

I'd recommend the Corsair Vengeance series either way, with a 2x4GB if you only want 8GB, or a 2x8GB if you're looking for more headroom.

Ignore where it mentions Intel, it works just fine with AMD too. As for the $50 difference, it may or may not be worth it to you.

There are also different colours to match your system design.

Granted, it is quite expensive RAM (but worth it), so if you're looking for something cheaper, just let me know.

I'm thinking if I go the 12GB route, to get this

Or just get 3 of these

u/nateious · 2 pointsr/MLPLounge

That's pretty distasteful (the death threats, not your question), hell I've been building PCs for 16 years and I'm not positive you can't build a laptop. Certainly not in the traditional sense of buying individual components, but I bet you could piece together some sort of frankenlaptop from existing parts. Or build a PC into a briefcase emulate a laptops portability. Which I know works cause I know someone who did it back in the 90s.

I get that you don't want to go back to /r/buildapc but you really don't need to spend $2400.

16GB of RAM isn't strictly needed for games, very few will take advantage of that much. I can think of 1, Planetary Annihilation.

Anyway this is off the top of my head w/ out any research into cutting costs whatsoever. Spending some time on google you could prob shave off a few hundred.

4690K - $233

16GB RAM - $147

GTX 970 - $350

SSD - $127

PSU - $60

Motherboard - $140

HDD - $78

KB+M - $15

Windows - $92

Unless you are buying a $1200 dollar computer case, there's your good PC at half your expected cost.

I didn't include a monitor cause I'm going to assume that since your presently gaming on your 360 you have a TV and you can just plug your PC into that w/ a HDMI cable. Hell you can use same one you were using on your xbox after you throw it out since this PC will crush it. :-P

> This whole multi-process thing started as a nice idea on paper and ended up as an awful implementation for the end-user.

In terms of creating a more stable browser as a whole, I think of it as a huge success. At least if 1 tab (or group of tabs under the same renderer) crash, you don't lose the entire browser.

Memory is pretty cheap, especially considering the performance gains. If you're having memory issues, upgrade... Aim for 16 GB and you'll never need to think of memory usage again (unless you're doing video rendering, etc.); you shouldn't have to think about this stuff.

DDR4 isn't as bad as it used to be. It's far better now. When I got my 32GB kit it was nearly $500, now the same kit can be found for $150 or less

This 16gb DDR4 kit costs less than a similar 16gb DDR3 kit:

u/Pavlovs_Hot_Dogs · 1 pointr/buildapc

It's kind of dated (built it 3 years ago) but:

Rosewill 650W

Radeon 7870 GHz Edition

MSI P67A-GD55 (B3) LGA 1155

i5-2500k (just got an aftermarket cooler and will be overclocking for the first time today. I plan to get it ~4GHz)

2x8GB DDR3 1600 MHz

u/madhi19 · 1 pointr/buildapc

For starter unless you want to do some serious overclocking go with the cpu cooler coming with your CPU and you be fine. If you do plan on overclocking water cooling is a must anyway. Drop the case Amazon has the Haf 912 for 59 bucks that 45$ less I love mine. Change the memory to 2 x 8GB of Corsair Vengeance 2$ more but you have two free Ram slot to bump it up to 32 later on instead of buying another full set of 4. Keep the rest and maybe drop the SSD for now.

u/GreenDino123 · 1 pointr/buildapc

Hey thanks for the quick reply! I mostly use my PC for gaming, and my current GPU is a NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 6GB. And my current ram is 2 sticks of 8GB of ram (16GB total) from Corsair.

In terms of budget i'm rather flexible with how much I need to spend. I feel like my comfortable limit is around $200-$400 for a CPU, that being said if there is an option that is really good that is even cheaper than that, I would be willing to get that instead. If upgrading my motherboard and Ram is something that I need to do as well because of my outdated parts, then obviously i'm willing to spend more than my CPU budget.

I'm not very tech savvy when it comes to CPU's so i'm not sure what is good or not, however i'm getting better at knowing other parts such as GPU's and ram.

I don't think I need the CPU upgrade immediately, however some of the issues with my games are getting rather obnoxious when they occur (games becoming unresponsive for a half second or so when things get hectic). Most games work fine on my PC but I have noticed some of the newer games are beginning to have issues, even to the point of crashing to desktop in the middle of a game. Not going to go too much further with my tech issues as that's for a different subreddit.

Thanks again for the quick reply!

u/jesusismygardener · 1 pointr/buildapc

Thanks for the reply! Video card is a GTX 680 that I just got 3 weeks ago from RMAing old one that I thought was the problem. Ram is this

u/ReidTheWalrus · 1 pointr/hardwareswap

Here's 16gb for $128, so used for $100 shouldn't be an issue

I did up what I'd like to spend on a PSU though. Considering a fairly good power supply such as the corsair HX650 is ~$100, $80 seems pretty reasonable to me for a used product.

u/Zerim · 1 pointr/Bravenewbies

I've been helping people pick computer parts a lot lately, and here's my go-to current build (as in, where I feel price/performance is optimized)--it's usually around $1000, NOT including monitors. I built two for my company (minus the video card), and they are wonderful. If you want to compare: CPUs, GPUs.

Source: I've done IT for the past few years, and done dozens of computer purchases/builds.

Notes: I don't buy AMD or ATI unless it's an extreme budget build. I don't buy off-brand because I've had parts break and then not have an RMA available; I've had good experience and RMA support with Corsair and EVGA. You don't really need a CD/DVD drive; you can install Windows from a USB key, but if you're unsure, CD/DVD drives are like $15. If you go with Intel/nVidia Maxwell, you won't really need a >500W PSU.

I don't like to skimp on computers much because, economically, if you're spending even 5-10% of your time waiting for your computer and you earn $10-25/hr, $1000 is paid for in somewhere between 2000-250 hours of use, yet the computer will last at least 3-5 years.

Does anyone know if this cooler will work if I have two sticks of Corsair Vengeance? I couldn't find the clearance...Everyone seems to be unison that this cooler will produce better or equally the same temps as an AIO but you would have to spend a nice chunk of change for a custom loops to make better temps!

Basically, yeah. Although there's some stuff like [Corsair Value RAM] that's so cheap it just doesn't have any heat-spreaders or anything.

Something like [this] is tolerable. Something like [this] is not. I've never seen any proof that standard RAM that hasn't been overclocked, in a well-ventilated case, needs heat dissipation like that.

Hello all, first time posting here, but this looked like the right place.

Context:

I bought a Dell XPS 8500 6 years ago, and the graphics card/HDD failed simultaneously.I took it to the local shop, got some new parts, and have a better system now. It isn't top tier, but it is good enough for what I want.

I have an:Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-3770 CPU @ 3.40GHz, 4 Core(s) processor.EVGA GEFORCE GTX 1070.And I have my XPS 8500 motherboard.I want to put some more RAM into it, I currently have four: 4gb cards. (It says my avalable physical memory is only 12 though. I attached pics of the RAM, and my specs: https://imgur.com/a/4bvLt9A )

I was intending to buy two: 8gb cads, and I was gonna replace two of the 4gb cards with the 8gb's.

So my question is: How should I go about picking RAM?I do not need the best of the best RAM. I was thinking something like this:https://www.amazon.com/Corsair-CMZ16GX3M2A1600C10-Vengeance-Desktop-Memory/dp/B006EWUO22/ref=sr_1_4?s=pc&rps=1&ie=UTF8&qid=1536680347&sr=1-4&refinements=p_n_feature_five_browse-bin%3A677429011%2Cp_85%3A2470955011%2Cp_72%3A1248879011%2Cp_36%3A1253506011&th=1

I figured I should get some second opinions, before I buy it.

Ok so rather then getting another 8gb of 1066mhz for $40, should I just grab this set of 16gb 1600mhz for $80?

Hey thank you for all your help! It actually looks like I'm going to go with this! However I did swap out the RAM for 16 GB as shown here:
http://www.amazon.com/dp/B006EWUO22/?tag=pcpapi-20

But I do have a question! I noticed the graphics card is close to 11" and for the case you chose it says that it wouldn't fit if the drive cages are in. Is that a big deal or should I just go for a bigger case then? Also, will I need thermal paste for when I install the processor? This is my first time building a computer so I'm nervous and don't want to mess anything up haha

EDIT: Added another question.

u/TophShy · 1 pointr/buildapc

Sorry for the late reply! So my motherboard is a Gigabyte GA-Z77-D3H

Now tell me if I'm on the right track here:

Looking it up, it shows that the motherboard can support: DDR3 2800(OC)/1600/1333/1066 MHz RAM sticks up to 32 gigs.

The RAM from Amazon that I linked is DDR4. So that means that my current motherboard will not support this new RAM. Is that correct?

So I found 3 more on Amazon that look to be compatible. Can you let me know your thoughts on these?

RAM 1

RAM 2

RAM 3

Obviously by looking at my motherboard, I built this comp about
6-7 years ago. So I'm guessing upgrading my motherboard and then buying some DDR4 RAM would be best, but upgrading a motherboard sounds very complicated. Thoughts - and would I see a big difference?

Thanks!

EDIT: Also, another quick question: apparently I have 4 RAM slots. If I buy this new 16 gigs in the form of 2, 8 gigs sticks, can I fill all slots for a total of 24 gigs of RAM? So the slots would be 4-4-8-8. Or do all sticks have to be the same make/model/size? And if I am able to use all at once, should they be in any specific order?

I would look for a 16GB DDR3-1600 kit like this. What tasks does he want to perform on the computer?

u/Krysys · 1 pointr/buildapc

Well, I think I just want a fresh upgrade, it's time to do it anyway. I searched Amazon for "8th generation" parts, and found these (which are in my price point)

  1. Motherboard
  2. CPU
  3. RAM

    Would these be okay?

How good is this RAM for an Asus Z87 Pro?

I am currently running G.Skill RIPJAWS 4x4gb kit (only 2 work on my MOBO) but the reviews on this seem superb.

I dont know if this applies to amazon.com (I use .co.uk) but the Corsair Vengeance RAM is usually heavily discounted at christmas. I got 16gig ram for like £32 (it's listed for £77.99 currently). Now this isn't to say that it WILL be discounted at christmas btw.

oh sorry i should have mentioned: i have a 1TB already from an existing setup. I wasn't sure but it seemed like i needed my memory in pairs?

Having a really hard time telling why some RAM costs more than others:

vs.

I figured I could just get 2x of the Kingston and it would be cheaper than Corsair. I understand brands will price differently, but is there any other difference between these two?

Thank you.
The ram is PC3 - 12800U. What does the U represent?
Also, this ram should theoretically work correct? https://www.amazon.com/Corsair-Vengeance-1600MHz-Desktop-Memory/dp/B006EWUO22?th=1 I wonder if the board can handle 32 gigs of ram as well.

And my SSD that I have DayZ installed on.

Note that both my Graphics card and my Processor are overclocked, but they never reach temperatures past 60 deg C while gaming.

I managed to snag 4x 8GB DIMMs for £169.94 on Amazon last month. That was to go in my T20. Best deal I can find is this on Amazon is this.
