It's not overkill, no. It is, however, a ULV processor, hence the U at the end of the processor model.
If you wanted to go for a 14" T series ThinkPad you would need to go for the Lenovo ThinkPad T440p and configure it with the processor you wanted and ideally dedicated graphics. Just don't upgrade RAM or HDD on Lenovo's site. Get RAM Here. They charge way too much.

I've had a couple of people say that it would work and I've read in a couple of articles that you would be fine installing extra RAM. They never warned against it explicitly. Man. I'm scared now
