Take a look at the Dell Inspiron 17-3721 selling for about $500 USD with a Core i3 processor. I've purchased and set up several of these for clients and they've been well satisfied with its features and performance. With proper modifications, this notebook can be "cleansed" of its Windows 8 habits and "rehabilitated" in Windows 8.1.1. A good headset or earbuds will cure the audio deficiencies. It ships with minimal bloatware unlike many others, but it does feature some useful additional software.
Don't expect stellar support from Dell or ANY of today's notebook OEM's - ditto for M$FT. This notebook is available online from Dell or numerous vendors including Amazon.com.

I just bought one. This iteration of the Inspiron 17" with similar specs is quickly disappearing and there are few 17" notebooks to be found anywhere. I'm not much a fan of Dell, but you can get a current-gen Dell Inspiron within your budget which does have a 17.3" display, and doesn't have a crappy Celeron or Pentium processor.
It's a good option if you must have a 17.3" display at under $500.
We were able to find a Dell Inspiron 17 for $490, but it only has an i3 4010U processor, which is a good deal weaker than the G510's i5 4200M. Performance wise, nothing is going to beat the overall package that the G510 has to offer, and 15.6" is fairly large as it is.
