It is German civil law in text form and IMO every German should own a current one. Reading through it will be a challenge to your knowledge and understanding of German as well as teach you a few things about your rights when living in Germany.

Most books that do that are school textbooks for "Sozialkunde". Those tend to be expensive and specialised for the Bundesland and year they are meant for.

Your best bet are books that are meant to repeat all this stuff before an exam or textbooks that cover more than one year.

Regarding German history, search for "Hundert Deutsche Jahre" on youtube.

It is a series of documentaries covering the last 100 years of German history, every year gets its own episode that lasts about 9 min.

I don't have any recommendations for books, but my strategy was always to buy some small narrow and cheap introductions and then look at the index in the back for further reading.
