Dr Mutter's Marvels by Cristin O'Keefe Aptowicz, read by Erik Singer.

Dr Mutter led a short but interesting life that intersected with several important developments in the birth of modern medicine in pre-Civil War Philadelphia. These included the invention of plastic surgery, using ether in surgery, and the role of germs in infectious disease. Particularly fascinating to me was the brutal descriptions of pre-ether surgery and the sad state of women's health (one story of a woman who tried to get an abortion is especially tragic).

It was a good book with a good narrator - the only downsides were I never really felt like I got to know much about the real Dr Mutter, and the idea of his museum of medical oddities (the 'Marvels' in the title) didn't seem as integral to the story.
