Ellen Wood - I happened to buy one of her books, East Lynne, by chance this past year and I was hooked! I didn't sleep all night until I finished it, and then I was too haunted by the story to go to bed.
Choghig Kazandjian who's written a story set in Lebanon during the civil war - I found it different than most books out there nowadays, and a very interesting read.
Helene Hanff with her You've Got Mail type of story all about books! I've read that one so many times.
