So you're looking for a 5.1 home theater to replace/upgrade your current setup. Since you like the Pioneers of your current setup here is what I came up with.

AVR - Denon X1200w refurb $400

Speakers

  • Mains: Elac B6 $280

  • Rears: Elac B5$230

  • Center: Elac C5$180

    Sub - SVS PB1000 $500

Yes I know it's over budget but you could scale back to the B5 for the front to get it even closer but since you like stereo music I figured the larger B6 would be appreciated. You could if you wanted also also scale back the rears to something different I just went the matching tone throughout the setup.

I chose the ELAC's because you liked the Pioneers sound. The ELAC's are supposed to be close to the Pioneers but more refined in just about every way.

This is basically as good as it gets for compact speakers. I guess these are also pretty compact.

If you're into DIY, the Overnight Sensations are pretty small.

If you have $500 to throw around, I'd suggest getting rid of the "compact" requirement, buy some $50 speaker stands to put on the floor next to your desk, and get good, meaty bookshelfs e.g. KEF Q100, Vanatoo Transparent One, ELAC B6.

u/DZCreeper · 5 pointsr/BudgetAudiophile

I will assume stereo, because surround in that budget is a compromise.

TV Samsung UN55KS8000 - $1,799.99 Reason why I am going w/ the 55 is most manufcaturers don;t really make 60's anymore. if they do they aren't the best of their models.

As for the sound system

Hello Reddit,

I am looking to get started collecting vinyl and am saving up for a new turntable, amp & speakers. My total budget is $1,000. Below is currently what I have in mind, but I am open to suggestions:

Turntable:

Pro-Ject Debut Carbon

Open to vintage alternatives, but am still looking for quality

Receiver/Amplifier:

Yamaha A-S301

Onkyo A-9050

What I am looking for in a receiver is also the flexibility to hook up my TV to the speakers I'm buying. Let me know if you have any better recommendations.

Speakers

ELAC B6

Audioengine P4

I am really new to this stuff, but based on the research I have done I believe the choices listed above would be solid. I am leaning towards the ELAC Speakers, but the other parts of my system are very much undecided. Also, would I need a preamp for this set-up?

Here is a link to my local craigslist

Thanks for the help.

L/R: ELAC B6

Center: ELAC C5

Sub: BIC F12

Receiver: Denon S510BT

Speaker placement can be hard to figure out, but that all depends on the space. 3.1 is fairly easy even in small areas. I had a small living room and this worked out great for me.

When a better idea of the space you have, I could give you a build on what I'd do based on your budget.

these are supposed to be the best speakers in the budget category (hifi world is raving about them). can't wait to get a pair myself!

u/niuguy · 3 pointsr/malelivingspace

haha wow. Well, it would depend on a lot. But lets say you have a few bucks but not a lot to spend. I imagine you're interesting in keeping a clean look so definitely 2.0 for now (no sub). If you don't mind having a receiver I'd suggest the Elac B6 or B5 speakers. Amazing value. Pair that with a modest hdmi receiver by yamaha or denon....

Alternatively if you have headphone out you could get powered monitors. I'm a big fan of Emotiva's line. The Emotiva Airmotv 4s would be a great start....I really enjoy them for my desktop speakers. Could I always go bigger for better low end. With something like the 4s you may not get huge bass but you'll get solid lows but everything will be insanely clear and accurate. You'll never go back.

You'll want stands. I suggest Sanus...make sure whatever you get the tweeter is about head level while sitting.

Enjoy!

u/adayinalife · 3 pointsr/vinyl

You're definitely going down the powered speaker route?

Something like the Yamaha R-S201BL + ELAC B6 might be a better option if you dont mind having a receiver.

I would do this:

u/ggfools · 3 pointsr/audiophile

as for the sound card I would only get the soundblaster if you need a soundcard (something with mic input/etc) otherwise you will get better results out of a USB DAC like the Schiit Modi

for speakers, there's lots of options in the $300-$500 range, the JBL LSR305's in the OP are surely worth looking at, the ELAC B6 are another good choice, amps are included in the JBL's so you won't need one with those, but with the ELAC's an SMSL SA-60 should provide plenty of clean power.

u/rylanb · 3 pointsr/BudgetAudiophile

I'm a big fan of the KRKs. I have the 5s and the 8s and the sound is great! At $300 that is a bit over your range / budget, though. Unless you meant $150 each.

Just as an option on something that sounds pretty good, in my barely informed opinion.

If you don't need powered versions:

with a small amp would be a small stretch and seem fairly highly recommended online (and the price has come down quite recently on those)

50w x 2 channel with Bluetooth: https://www.parts-express.com/dayton-audio-dta-21bt-100w-class-d-21-amplifier-with-bluetooth-and-power-supply--300-3830

I'm getting that Dayton amp with two Dali Zensor 3s in the next month, as an aside. Sorry for the ramble, may or may not help.

u/ShinyTile · 3 pointsr/hometheater

This and these would be a start to a great system, or you could do the same receiver + these fronts and this center and these surrounds. The second set is my setup, actually. That's napkin math to $1k, and it's freaking solid. slightly not as good as the UB5s, but for home theater usage, that's less of a deal. If you want top end music performance too, I'd vote get the UB5s. I'm extremely happy with my B6s/matching center / surrounds.

u/HaNs_SuPeR · 3 pointsr/BudgetAudiophile

I recommend considering the Elac B6 Debut Bookshelf speakers.
6.5 inch mid/bass drivers, so a decent amount of bass. They are BIG for being called bookshelf speakers. Sound best on speaker stands.
Great reviews,

u/applevinegar · 3 pointsr/audiophile

Don't buy those speakers. They're absolutely terrible for the price.

If you'd like active monitors (which is a perfectly good alternative) I suggest getting a pair of Emotiva Airmotiv 6s if you're in the US.

Otherwise you'll need a receiver. In that case, if you're positive you'll be adding a subwoofer, you have two alternatives: either a multichannel amp (even if you're going to use it in stereo) that has bass management such as this or a stereo receiver like this to which you'll add an active crossover (or possibly a miniDSP) when you do get the sub.
In the first case scenario you'll have enough to for a pair of Emotiva B1s, Elac B6 or Wharfedale Diamond 220s. If you go for the Onkyo for now, you'll have a higher budget for the speakers allowing you to reach for a pair of KEF Q100s or DALI Zensor 3.

And don't buy a turntable if you don't already have a collection. Forcibly "getting LP records" is a silly hipster thing. It's an outdated medium with a multitude of inherent flaws.

u/BudgetAudiophile · 3 pointsr/hometheater

I haven't really heard much about Sony receivers so I can't really comment on that aspect of it but generally Denon or other manufactures are recommended around here. Might be worth looking into something like the Denon x1300 on acessories4less. It's a little more expensive but you get audyssey room correction which can be really helpful.

I'd skip the center channel for now and maybe even the subwoofer and go with some higher end speakers. Something in the $300 range would probably do you much better than skimping on the speakers and getting the center channel right now. The Elac Debut B6's are highly recommended (haven't heard them myself but have heard a lot of praise):

https://www.amazon.com/Debut-Bookshelf-Speakers-Andrew-Jones/dp/B014GSEQ06/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1519671824&sr=8-3&keywords=elac+debut+b6&dpID=41zNEwhnFGL&preST=_SY300_QL70_&dpSrc=srch

They're also about to announce the 2018 model lineup and they are front ported which is cool. Maybe some others can chime in on some good speakers in the $300 price range as well.

So the Denon receiver plus a pair of the Elac's would run you about $600, you could save the $100 and put it towards a nicer subwoofer. Something like an HSU, Rythmik, or SVS. I think you'd be MUCH happier going this route than skimping on the components now just to get started and then having to spend more money later on when you realize how much of a difference a quality setup will sound. I skimped out when starting my setup and I definitely have regretted it and spent more money than I otherwise would have had I just spent the money upfront.

u/mattSER · 3 pointsr/audiophile

https://www.amazon.com/Denon-AVR-S510BT-Channel-Receiver-Bluetooth/dp/B00YAO43YG

Hard to find better floorstanding speakers for $300, but since you're going to be adding a subwoofer later anyway, maybe start with some nicer $300 bookshelf speakers?

The Emotivas would be the easiest and cheapest system to complete later.

The Klipsch would be easy to complete too, but more expensive.

u/ZeosPantera · 2 pointsr/Zeos

Honestly the Yamaha YHT-492OUBL probably isn't the WORST Htib but your Sony receiver is not very good so if you wanted to replace your setup you would have to replace that with it.

Assuming you have a budget roughly the same as the Yamaha setup you can get a very decent 2.0 going that will sound better than the Yamaha for sure. A Refurbished receiver and a set of the Elac B6's and you can add a center, rears and a sub in the future OR you can get a cheaper 5.0 right away with that receiver and two pair of Micca MB42x and the matching center. The Subwoofer is usually the big nut you have to leave out until you can afford to add one. Something just over $100 like the Dayton Sub1000 down the road.

u/etanfan · 2 pointsr/audiophile

I am looking for some bookshelf speakers under $200 to hook up to this Denon S530. The speakers will be used for music from my phone or turntable. I am thinking about getting the Elac B6. What other speakers do you guys recommend?

u/K1986 · 2 pointsr/BudgetAudiophile

I bought these speakers back in Jan 2017 for $300CAD (which is about 250USD).

The Q100s are an older model and KEF has the Q150s out now. However, if this seller's speakers are in good condition, I guess there's nothing wrong with getting them or look around for a KEF dealer who might still have the 100s in stock.

Another option would be the ELac B6 - something that performs well in your price range. There's lots of reviews about them.

u/mikeTRON250LM · 2 pointsr/hometheater

Ehh, I wouldnt want to buy new $400 speakers, but I tend to buy used quality gear with everything in life as its just such a better deal.

I started my home audio journey with Pioneer Andrew Jones Towers and bookshelves. they go on sale for about $70 a pair for the BS and 150 for the towers. I got a used 5.1 for about $300 (even though they were new in box) and I enjoyed those for about 2 years before my kids wrecked on of the towers. I would say they are a bit warm (lacking highs) but they had a solid bang for the buck if you aren't paying retail.

I guess if you insisted on buying used because you aren't comfortable with finding good deals, I would consider the following speakers.

  • Chane Acoustics - Buy LCR (two 1.4 and one 2.4) and save up for surrounds and sub
  • RBH Sound - buy three pair and use one as a center vertically
  • Q Acoustics - Buy two pair and save up more for a center and Sub
  • ELAC - Buy a pair of bookshelves and a center, save up for another pair of bookshelves for surrounds and a then a sub
u/dr_torque · 2 pointsr/audiophile

You could consider this amplifier with these speakers. (New) This combination commits the cardinal sin of the amplifier being more expensive than the speakers but will work well.

u/downhomegroove · 2 pointsr/BudgetAudiophile

I just recently got the following and I listen to Jazz/Blues/Bluegrass quite a bit. I also wanted a A/V Receiver that would allow for future 4K@60FPS when/if I go down that road. Granted this will put you at 500 bucks, but just thought I would share.

ELAC Debut B6 For the type of music you are listening to, these definitely have enough low end range, plus they just sound really, really good to me at least.

Denon AVR-S510BT This is the A/V Receiver I use and I"m happy with it. The only thing I don't like are the spring clips, but I couldn't find anything else at the price point that had that many HDMI 2 ports plus optical in for my Chromecast Audio, plus this is able to power the ELAC's just fine. I wouldn't go over 16 gauge speaker wire for the spring clips. 14 might be doable, but it would be a pain.

u/Artbrutist · 2 pointsr/audiophile

Well, that's the least you could spend. Honestly, you'll be much happier if you take the money you have now, add to it for 6 months or so, and by yourself something like this and these.

u/PGleo86 · 2 pointsr/vinyl

As for turntables, keeping it around $100 for that or so, these all look promising:

https://kansascity.craigslist.org/ele/5326115698.html

https://kansascity.craigslist.org/eld/5367183235.html

You'd also need a receiver and speakers.

As far as receivers go, there isn't much that I'm seeing on your CL that's affordable, but:

https://kansascity.craigslist.org/ele/5362782530.html

https://kansascity.craigslist.org/ele/5347386328.html

https://kansascity.craigslist.org/ele/5327514783.html (a bit pricier than the above)

and if you're willing to travel a bit:

https://columbiamo.craigslist.org/ele/5303644484.html

https://lawrence.craigslist.org/ele/5317433502.html

Which brings me to speakers, the most important part of a setup:

https://kansascity.craigslist.org/ele/5344278907.html

Maybe? Your CL doesn't have much in the way of good deals that I'm seeing. The ELAC Debut B6 speakers are very nice. If I'm way off on your budget, let me know (actually, a budget would be helpful anyway :P)

u/_shadow_banned_ · 2 pointsr/BudgetAudiophile

Do you have any aesthetic expectations?

I would use a laptop as a source, buy a Fiio DAC, get an audiosource amp, and buy a set of ELAC B6

That's in your price range, but it completely skips the idea of "stereo system" and relies on you owning a computer to dedicate to music.

I woudl have a completely different plan if it was dedicated installed stereo or something that you wanted portable.

u/mastermikeee · 2 pointsr/audiophile

Wow. Very well written. Most helpful advice I've ever received on this thread.

Definitely sold on the 2.0 and future sub.

So these speakers

And this amp?

u/zim2411 · 2 pointsr/audiophile

They've hit $200 a pair a few times already, but they might stay at $200 (until sold out?) given that the B6.2's are out.

u/cubical_hell · 1 pointr/audiophile

OK with that budget I'd recommend these:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0044779GI?keywords=yamaha%20stereo%20receiver&qid=1450656032&ref_=sr_1_4&sr=8-4

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B014GSEQ06?keywords=elac%20andrew%20jones&qid=1450656098&ref_=sr_1_1&sr=8-1

This would be a great little stereo system. It wouldn't have a subwoofer, but that can be added down the road.

The Yamaha is a nice stereo receiver with built in phono input for their turntable and record collection, a subwoofer output if they decide to add a sub down the road.

Andrew Jones has been killing it recently in the budget speaker category. I haven't personally heard the ELAC's but the Pioneers were quite good and these are supposedly better by those who've heard both.

u/speedyspaghetti · 1 pointr/audiophile

Hey everyone - I'm looking for a modest setup to listen to music while I work. I'm definitely new to this, so I would love some advice. I listen mostly to hip-hop, rap, and classic rock. I would be connecting these speakers to a dedicated music player - right now my Zune HD.

I'm thinking of getting the ELAC B6s and the SMSL SA-98 AMP.

What else do I need to make this work? Would I need a DAC? If so, which one would you guys recommend? Thank you so much!

u/iJustWantaFanta · 1 pointr/audiophile

I'm in the process of buying my first external speakers for a TV setup. I'm planning on buying bookshelf speakers to put on either side of my TV, all on a large tv stand.

I'm leaning towards buying ELAC B series speakers: the B5 (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B014GSER6O/ref=ox_sc_sfl_title_6?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER) and B6 (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B014GSEQ06/ref=ox_sc_sfl_title_7?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER) speakers are currently the same price, is there a reason to not buy B6?

Will adding a center channel provide a noticeable difference? If I buy the 6.5" bookshelf speakers, will a 5.25" center channel work? Or should I worry about buying a subwoofer before buying a center channel?

Thanks for any help!

u/SugarMyChurros · 1 pointr/vinyl

If Best Buy is only option, it wouldn't hurt, especially the Open Box section. If you have any dedicated Audio places in your area, check them out, most of them sell used equipment.
Online, Crutchfield and Amazon have really good return policies and both have Open Box sections, just make sue you keep the boxes and packaging. Amazon has a pretty good selection of most of the recommended speakers in your price range. In the last 6 months, I've seen these in Black Ash go down to $299 several times.

Hey guys! I recently got my Fluance RT80 and I’ve been loving it! But I’m finally upgrading my speakers and receiver. I settled on a few options and I was wondering which ones you guys would recommend.

Receiver:

SMSL AD18 HIFI Audio Stereo Amplifier ($144)

Or

Yamaha R-S202BL Stereo Receiver $120

Speakers

ELAC B5 Debut Series 5.25" $229

Or

ELAC B6 Debut Series 6.5" $278

Or

Micca MB42X Bookshelf Speakers With 4-Inch Carbon Fiber Woofer and Silk Dome $89

The top of my budget is about $400. I’m wondering if it’s going to be a noticeable difference to upgrade the speakers from the Micca to the ELAC B5 or even B6. I’ve been trying to find a used receiver as I realize it’s not as important as the speakers but I’ve been finding nothing locally (anything decent is way overpriced). Thanks!

Looking to play music from a computer. Any and all commentary on this set up is welcome. What's the optimal cable set up for the following components:

Modi 2 Uber DAC

Yamaha R-S202BL Receiver (Will occasionally play music through bluetooth from the receiver.)

ELAC B6 Debut

Monoprice 12 Inch 150 Watt Powered Sub

The Modi 2 is still in the mail... So I'm thinking USB to Modi, RCA to Receiver. Is this ideal?

Also, my Receiver doesn't have a dedicated "subwoofer" output... I've just been using the RCA Out.

I'd recommend getting a good set of studio monitors, though your budget should allow for some pretty good passive options as well.

I linked to noaudiophiles review for the top two in case you wanted a comparison, both prices are taken from amazon. Emotiva pretty much only sells direct so off their site is the only option.

    > Passives

  • Philharmonic AA Monitor - $210 + Shipping
  • HTD Level 3 - $320 / $350 (Depends on color)
  • KEF Q100 - $300
  • Elac B6 - $280
  • Emotiva B1 - $300

If you choose to go passive, you'll also need an amp. How much space do you have to work with? If you don't have the space for a full sized receiver, the SMSL Q5 is the best amp I can think of off the top of my head for a desk setup.

So, music and not movies?

u/biggulp1516 · 1 pointr/hometheater

Okay so going down the all new route, I wouldn't recommend the Micca's unless you're in a really small space. Those are more of desktop speakers, not home theater speakers which are what you're looking for with your big TV.

If my large-ish room assumption is correct, then really your entry level is the ELAC b5 or b6 (more so the b6 because if you have a 65" tv, you probably need the extra displacement to push enough sound at a low enough distortion to your seating position). I would get those and [this] (https://www.amazon.com/Denon-AVR-S510BT-Channel-Receiver-Bluetooth/dp/B00YAO43YG/ref=sr_1_1?s=aht&ie=UTF8&qid=1491185117&sr=1-1&keywords=receiver+certified+refurbished) and you would be in business. Here is the matching center.

1. Budget

I don't have a budget since I'll be saving for each individual necessity for the long run, though I would not spend more than $1,000 for speakers. That being said, you can make a decision on what are price points for each respective item.

2. What are you looking for?

I'm essentially looking for a living room audiophile set up. I would not mind recommendations other than floor standing speakers, but that is what I have now and I'm very pleased with the way it looks. I do not know what I'm looking for since I'm not sure what should be upgraded and what is missing.

3. How will you typically be using the gear?

Mid-Field

4. What gear do you own?

Specifics, I have a Yamaha RX-V381BL Receiver with a pair of Andrew Jones's ELAC B6 speakers. For headphones, I only use an Audio Technica's ATH-M40X.

5. What do you intend on using for a source?

I'll be using a laptop connected via HDMI to the receiver (unless someone thinks I should opt for a different source if I get a dedicated stereo receiver.)

6. What material will you be using your gear for?

Dedicated for music. I would like it to connect this system with HDMI ports i/o, but if a dedicated stereo is necessary, i'll be glad to go through that route.

7. Are you willing to buy used?

Yes, I am willing to buy used, though craigslist, etc. is not preferred. Something like Amazon would be nice. Local: Los Angeles.

Thoughts:

I do not know anything about amplifiers, DACs, tubes, etc. so if you could inform me, that would be appreciated.

Note:

This was re-uploaded with updated information for further suggestions and aid. I'm not too new to audiophile but I never have owned my own full set up. Any information would be very much appreciated. Thank you in advanced.

u/schmidty850 · 1 pointr/hometheater

Would you recommend going with the 2.1 system with these:

Elac B6's and the BIC F12

OR

WharfDale Diamond 10.1's and the BIC F12

or the 5.1 system with:

Fluance AV5HTB's and the BIC F12.

Thanks

EDIT: Added the WharfDale's since they are of comparable price to the Elac B6's and I've heard they are supposed to be pretty great

u/Yoyodyne_Propulsion_ · 1 pointr/hometheater

I am also building slowly to 5.1. I don't know how quickly you want to get there or what you want the final tally to be, but I would opt for less, but better equipment, to start. I'd get a cheaper receiver and subwoofer to get my foot in the door, but I'd buy better speakers.

I'd go with something like this:

Receiver - $169.99 http://www.accessories4less.com/make-a-store/item/yamhtr3067bl/yamaha-htr-3067-5.1-ch-x-70-watts-a/v-receiver-same-as-rx-v377/1.html

Front L/R - $279.99 https://www.amazon.com/Debut-Bookshelf-Speakers-Andrew-Jones/dp/B014GSEQ06/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1473895480&sr=1-1&keywords=elac

This comes in at $449.98 This will be 100% better, and absolutely replace your soundbar, which is what you need right now. It also puts you $80 dollars from the matching center, or $113 from a nice subwoofer. You could spend $500 on a subwoofer now, like was posted above, but it would outclass your fronts by a large margin. I prefer better dialogue/sound overall. This sub is 85% of what a subwoofer double it's price gives. I started with 2.1 and I don't regret going slowly.

Center - $179.99 https://www.amazon.com/Debut-Center-Speaker-Andrew-Jones/dp/B014GSEQWE/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1473895660&sr=1-1&keywords=elac+center

Subwoofer - $213 https://www.amazon.com/BIC-America-F12-475-Watt-Subwoofer/dp/B0015A8Y5M

u/nomnommish · 1 pointr/audio

Classical music is always a challenge. You can get a NAD D 3020 dac/amp for $400, and pair it with Elac B6 for $280. For an extra $35, you can buy Chromecast Audio that will give you high quality wireless streaming, and you can feed its digital output into the NAD.

You can read the reviews of all these products. There are alternatives to the NAD D 3020 in similar price points. Marantz PM 6005 for example is available for only a little bit more and it has an inbuilt DAC too. But i honestly believe this is one of the best "bang for the buck" configurations you can get in your budget.

Just make sure to put the speakers on stands, give it some room away from the back wall, and use the Cardas Golden Ratio to place your speakers optimally in your room.

u/diablo_neruda · 1 pointr/BudgetAudiophile

ELAC B6 - $280 pair
ELAC C5 - $180

Floor standing speakers aren't going to work very well considering that your sofa is kind of in the way. Unless you have kids or pets that require you to stick with floor standers. I usually get them because the sell pretty well on craigslist as I like to cycle through speakers and move them on.

Elacs play very well in awkward rooms, and they sell exceptionally well on the aftermarket if you want to upgrade. I've heard them a few times and came away pretty impressed considering their price.

Denon X1200W (Receiver) - https://www.amazon.com/Denon-AVR-X1200W-Channel-Receiver-Bluetooth/dp/B00ZY7FHXY/

ELAC B6 Pair (Front Left/Right) - https://www.amazon.com/Debut-Bookshelf-Speakers-Andrew-Jones/dp/B014GSEQ06/

ELAC C5 (Center) - https://www.amazon.com/Debut-Center-Speaker-Andrew-Jones/dp/B014GSEQWE

ELAC B4 (Rear/Surrounds) - https://www.amazon.com/ELAC-Debut-Bookshelf-Speaker-Black/dp/B01DKDJRH0/

Klipsch R-10SW (Subwoofer) - https://www.amazon.com/Klipsch-R-10SW-Powerful-10-Subwoofer/dp/B00MH42BBI

Totals to around $1300. You could probably get lesser speakers for the rears, as they aren't as important. Could also try to get a better sub, as you have an extra $200 left if you have a $1500 budget. The receiver supports both Dolby Atmos and DTS X, but if you want Atmos you'll need to buy either in ceiling speakers or the ELAC upfiring A4 speaker.

u/Itchy_Asshole · 1 pointr/buildapc

You can do what i did and get a 2.1 amp on amazon or parts express and then go to savers to get some really good speakers for cheap. I bought these for $4 and this sub for $13 both at savers and use a Lepai LP168HA to power them all and I couldn't be happier with the sound. Total came out to about $47 Plus some speaker wire.

When i shopped at savers I followed the general rule of thumb that the bigger the diaphram, the heavier the speaker, the better chance of getting a good quality sound to come out of it.

Edit: By going this route, you also get the ability to upgrade your speakers to something like this in the future when you get more cash or when that audiophile bug bites you.

u/Omerbaturay · 1 pointr/hometheater

Alrighty I looked at the Zeos buying guide. The media room is 11x10 with 9ft ceilings. Here's what I've picked out and it looks like I'll be able to be beat or match Sonos' pricing.

Receiver - AVRS530BT (https://www.amazon.ca/Denon-Audio-Component-Receiver-AVRS530BT/dp/B06XYD1RZ3/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1512081630&sr=8-1&keywords=denon+receiver)

On the above, it looks like 4K passthrough and HDR 2.2 is fine as well. Just want to make sure.

Left / Right - ELAC B6 6.5" (https://www.amazon.ca/Debut-Bookshelf-Speakers-Andrew-Jones/dp/B014GSEQ06/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1512081995&sr=8-2&keywords=elac%2Bb5&th=1)

On the above, I'm not sure about sizing. What would be difference between 4", 5" and 6.5"?

Center - ELAC C5 (https://www.amazon.ca/Debut-Center-Speaker-Andrew-Jones/dp/B014GSEQWE/ref=sr_1_4?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1512082107&sr=1-4&keywords=elac+debut)

Rear - Fluance XLBP (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01KAIHDRY/ref=as_li_ss_tl?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&linkCode=sl1&tag=zeos-20&linkId=4686b99594dc842920ce5b0af24c749c)

On the above, do I need 1 or 2 of these? I'm not sure if I'll be mounting or keeping it on stands.

Sub - BIC America F12 12" (https://www.amazon.com/BIC-America-F12-475-Watt-Subwoofer/dp/B0015A8Y5M/ref=as_li_ss_tl?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1462201214&sr=1-26&keywords=subwoofer&linkCode=sl1&tag=zeos-20&linkId=12c7dd989108e560a1c31e4716134e84)

Unsure about sizing / power of this sub and whether it necessitates 2? I'm not a HUGE sub person (been living in a condo for a while but now in a single detached) but I do like "feeling" the booms, crashes etc. Second, can you confirm receiver will be able to power this?

Should be it! Let me know!

picture of room setup

hi there, i come before you as a complete noob, so please be kind! i'm starting from scratch and i know nothing about audio.

previously had a sony ht-ct550w soundbar that just stopped turning on. typical use is broadcast tv, fire tv stick, and occasional iphone spotify stream or playing from spotify. rarely use dvd and have zero console games or turntables. just looking for a setup that can play phone music and streamed content via kodi/exodus. just want a solid system without overpaying for features or getting ripped by a big box store. room is 12x18 with 10' ceilings at the end of an open-floor plan. french door w/drapes on the left and a big rug on the floor... hardwood floors all down the rest of the house to the right.

starting from scratch, budget is $600ish for all. based on my reading, i think the ELAC B6
are what i want. do i need to add a sub? what receivers should i be looking at?

thanks in advance.

You're gonna want some real speakers. Something like these ELAC B6s + any decent receiver would be great.

u/tom_snout · 1 pointr/vinyl

You didn't specify your budget, with of course is the nub of it all. Here are two options that I know sound great, both about $600 give or take. For affordable-yet-awesome with a small footprint I like the audioengine A5+ active speakers (=amplifer and speakers together). You could then add a schiit mani phono preamp and you're done. Or, if you want a stand alone amplifier and passive speakers, it's hard to go wrong with the very nice Emotiva TA-100; great sound, lots of connectivity with high quality phono preamp, at a reasonable price, and connect it to a pair of Elac Debut b6 speakers.

u/hack_tc · 1 pointr/BudgetAudiophile

If I were you I would skip on getting the center speaker and focus on the best 2 bookshelf speakers you can afford. If you can spring for Elac B6's @ $280 those would be fantastic. A cheaper option (and many argue better) would be these Philharmonic's Affordable Accuracy Monitor @$195+shipping.

As Yolo stated, if you must get a center channel speaker make sure it is matching. It's perfectly fine (and often times better) to use a standard bookshelf speaker that matches your others, than purposefully named "center" channel speaker.

u/Killobyte · 1 pointr/audiophile

I'm looking for speakers at or around $250 to hook up to my Technics SU-Z980. I know you've got the JBLs in the header, but those are powered so I'm wondering if I can get more bang for my buck with passive speakers since I have an amp. I'll be using the speakers for listening to vinyl on my Technics SL235 (I don't have a particular tie to Technics, that's just what I've ended up with). I've been looking at the ELAC B6s but they're a little steep at $280. The B5s are in the same line at a lower price, but I feel like it's a waste to get those and not stretch for the B6 since they're supposed to have noticeably better quality. My only concern is that my amp recommends 8 ohm speakers and those are 6 ohm, and I've heard they can take a bit of power to drive, so I don't know how loud or long I'll be able to play them without overheating my amp. As an added bonus I happen to have a $75 Best Buy gift card - I don't know if they sell anything decent, but if they do I can use that to up my budget a bit. Thanks!

Edit: Who the hell downvotes a question in a question thread?

u/_MrRager_ · 1 pointr/vinyl

Hi all! I have done some research here on this sub and elsewhere, but have hopefully made a decision on a setup to get started.
Fluance RT81, ELAC B6 Debut Series 6.5", and SMSL Audio SA-36A PRO HiFi Digital Amplifier
Is this a good setup to get started? Thanks

u/grizzlybee · 1 pointr/projectors

I think you would probably want to go with the Elac Debut series speakers.

Elac B6 RL $280

Elac C5 center $180

Elac B4 surrounds $180

Either the Dayton 12 inch sub for $128 +shipping or the BIC F12 $209 for a bit more

Then check out accessories4less for a receiver

u/jboulter11 · 1 pointr/audiophile

I've not heard your current speakers or the JBL Control 1 Pros, so I cannot comment on the sound of those. However, for your budget my usual recommendation is Micca MB42Xs. You might also consider Pioneer Andrew Jones bookshelves that you could eventually move to being satellites for a pair of matching tower speakers in the front.

You could also consider some ELAC bookshelves.

u/Ruckus55 · 1 pointr/hometheater

Right now this is what I am leaning toward. Thoughts?

u/SRMort · 0 pointsr/xboxone

They do try to steer you away, because soundbars for the most part sound like shit. A good set of bookshelf speakers will sound better than a sound bar. It literally comes down to do you want mediocre sound, or do you want immersive lifelike sound? The cost is definitely a factor, but you can get some good entry level stuff that'll still sound better than a sound bar.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B014GSEQ06/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1495983581&sr=8-3&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_QL65&keywords=elac+debut+b6&dpPl=1&dpID=41zNEwhnFGL&ref=plSrch

Pair these with a receiver or amplifier and you've got the basics for a 2-channel setup, which is pretty much what a sound bar can get you, just not as well. Plus you can add more components later if you actually want surround sound and things soundbars cannot provide.

u/LunarStorms · 0 pointsr/BudgetAudiophile
