Oh wow okay, so I got everything in the mail besides the case. So I decided to hook everything up and update the BIOS. Everything worked fine, ram clocked up to 2800 ish no prob, never tried for 3000. But I'm an idiot and shorted the wrong pins to reboot the system, saw a spark, and all the fans stopped and so did my heart. Turns out my psu saved me by Auto shutting off and I think everything is fine now.

Honestly, that build will probably draw around 400-450 watts on full load. So if you're not planning on going SLI, i personally wouldn't, I would get a 600-650 watt PSU for some headroom. The EVGA SuperNOVA line tends to be pretty good, this one would work great.

Best I can recommend is the EVGA 650 SuperNOVA G3 here. However, it is $100 right now which is a bit expensive for it. I only like fully modular power supplys and love the eco switch on the G3, however, if you want a lower cost go for the superNOVA NEX here. Good luck!

edit: Please note the NEX does not have a eco switch, which keeps the fan not running in low power idle situations. The G3 has it. I recommend 650 for future upgrades.

Hey, not really sure why nobody else chimed in about this but I'm hoping I'm not too late on this suggestion. If you're getting a 2600 and looking to overclock at all (which is highly recommended), you'll want a motherboard with LLC available in the bios. That ASRock motherboard does not, to my knowledge.

This motherboard does, and has better VRMs. The trade-off would be that MSI doesn't have voltage offset available in their bios, but that's only relevant for Ryzen x series chips. So, for example, if you were buying a 2600x, I'd be more inclined to recommend your currently selected ASRock mobo over the one I linked.

This is without getting into any of the other feature differences between the boards, as the bios options / overclocking potential is a pretty notable divide between the two for your cpu.

Edit: Oh also, there have been some really good PSU deals over the last few days where I wouldn't recommend paying ~$80 for a 550w G2. While 550w is plenty for your build and more isn't necessary by any means, I'd recommend this as you'll be saving ~$20.

Replace PSU with something like this. $15 more for a gold rated, higher quality, fully modular unit.

The K55 isn't mechanical, just a heads up. It's not half bad as a membrane keyboard though If you want mechanical with white backlighting, the Logitech G610 has sold on amazon for $60 a few times and uses Cherry MX Reds. There's also the Gigabyte Force K83, which lacks dedicated media and volume keys and backlighting, but is a steal at $40 (an LED desk lamp can kinda solve the lack of a backlight. I use the Logitech in my home office and the Gigabyte Force at work.

It's highly likely your psu that overheats or malfunction in some other way which then triggers a over temperature/over current etc protection which causes it to shutdown until you restart it (your psu, not just your pc). This is particularly likely if your PSU is a cheap and/or low wattage OEM unit but can happen to any psu (I've personally seen 2 expensive Seasonic power supplies fail in this manner). I'm guessing you have a prebuilt system since you have a i7 8700 non-k and didn't mention any gpu or ram brands. If the PC is still under warranty you need to RMA it otherwise you need to replace the PSU yourself which will also void any remaining warranty.

Then I noticed there were a bunch of options: the GM G2 G3 etc. What are the differences? I can't figure it out. The G5 seems to be a few bucks cheaper than the G3...should I get that over the G3 which was what i originally went there to buy?

I'm really starting to think the PSU is the culprit. Do they have a 30-day refund policy? I'd see about getting that back, and buying this EVGA P2 650 (platinum) for the same price, or this EVGA G3 650 (gold). I prefer these for quality, and the gold is common choice.

I realize you said "no HDD" but with that 270 mother board, I'd look at using a SAMSUNG 960 EVO M.2 250GB NVMe. Load OS onto it, then have the SSD.

Just did a similar build, bought Win7 (Home $54) (I'm used to it, and wanted to bring over software from old machine) - but Babylake system will cause Win7 updates not to load, forcing Win10 ($110). In all honesty, had a I known the issue I would have just gone with Win10 disc (spent four hour watching, updating 1 of 179 updates keep rebooting and repeat. Sigh)

Do a sanity check on part. The i7 is $5 more from Amazon Prime. With Superbiz and Newegg their websites suck, and returns are a hassle. With Amazon the make it too easy, especially when dealing with DOA parts, with in 30 return window. My 1060 video card was $200 cheaper on Newegg, so I did use them for that.

Took me a day to boot my 270 mother board. Hindsight, install just ONE drive. Install OS. Now install additional drives. Win7 installed boot on drive 0, but OS on drive1.

750W should be plenty. If you do want to get another PSU, I recommend something like this Seasonic one, or the EVGA Supernova G3 If you want a fully modular one. Corsair RMx series are also fine. Personally I would just reuse the PSU you have and put that money on a decent CPU cooler from Noctua or Be quiet to overclock the 3600.

*But also I would not want to risk new hardware with old PSU so there's that. Maybe someone with more knowledge on the psu offer better advice.

The ibuypower one linked doesn't appear to be that bad. But when reading the comments there are people who got the 8700k version for $1350 (currently $1433, one you linked "on sale" for 1499.99)...so pricing might be misleading. Also keep in mind SI's need to make a profit and usually skimp when it comes to things like cooling, storage and motherboards. I can't tell what mobo that has, but it shouldn't be much of an issue unless you want to overclock, probably not as good components and features as what I listed though. The cooling is actually pretty nice with the cpu watercooling at that price. But not sure on how it is for the other components (ie system case fans). The storage is a bit shit, with a smaller sata ssd and a smaller much slower mechanical hdd. The RAM isn't much better, going off amazon reviews it's basically no name ram at 2666mhz. Also they use a generic 600W psu and apparently the included mouse and keyboard stink. So gotta take the good with the bad but the one I price out looks like a much better option across the board and leaves you room to pick and choose certain upgrades n such

Compatible? Yes. Recommended for an 8700k system? No.

The "Haswell" compatibility thing had to do with a change between 3rd gen and 4th gen processors and how 4th gen handled power in certain scenarios (the C7 sleep state, in particular). It's mainly to say that you shouldn't really use a PSU from earlier generations on a system 4th Gen or later (though, technically, there isn't anything that could stop you, as they have the same plugs and pinouts).

For an 8700k/1070 system, I would recommend nothing less than 600w Bronze rated, particularly if you want to overclock (which, with a k series processor, you likely do). Even then, while adequate, I would really recommend something 600w or more, and Gold rated.

The 80+ "Colour/Metal" rating on power supplies is in regards to efficiency, and with that, overall quality of the PSU (compared to other PSUs from that manufacturer). There's 80+ White, 80+ Bronze, 80+ Silver (which isn't common), 80+ Gold, 80+ Platinum and 80+ Titanium, going from lowest efficiency (and typically lowest component quality and warranty length) to highest efficiency. The one you linked is of the lowest efficiency rating

It's all about how much power a PSU draws from the wall in order to give you the power your computer needs. The extra power drawn is generally bled off as heat waste. So, the more efficient the PSU is rated, the less "extra" it needs to pull from the wall, and ultimately the less heat it generates in the process. So, while they cost more, the higher rated the PSU, the less it'll cost you on your power bill (compared to the same wattage at a lower efficiency rating), the less heat will radiate into the system, and the less the fan will need to run (which means less noise).

It can also affect overclocking, as the more efficient units will also typically supply a cleaner (more even, less spiky) power delivery to the components, which helps stability when pushing your speeds.

As a minimum I would recommend something like this EVGA or Corsair, and would personally choose something like these Gold rated EVGA or Corsair units.

I would also recommend looking up the PSUs on ca.pcpartpicker.com, as they will pull pricing from a number of different Canadian PC part retailers (including Amazon) and allow you to see the difference and pick the lowest option (though, they don't always factor in shipping costs, and it doesn't always immediately update if it's out of stock at a particular retailer).
