mommyanddaddynon-biological guardians shouldn’t say no. Also, it sucks to have a guidance counselor Make A Schedule for you in order to prepare you for an office job equivalent that’s full of busywork but one of the few respectable positions left. The horror! Seriously, in what world is that rebelling against socialism? You know, that thing that promotes trade schools and equal rights for everyone, even the people you don’t personally like?I’d also be curious to hear what /u/bethrevis has to say about the societies on Godspeed and elsewhere and where they fit into this opinion piece.
Guys, I think I just wrote an English essay. And probably put more work into it than I did in high school. And I won’t even get an A because it’s the internet and we deal solely in lolcats.
But tl;dr: Adult dystopias (that I’ve read) tend to be about the futility of existence or the necessity of self-sacrifice to get a result. The YA dystopias I liked were a little more hopeful (usually) and didn’t support this opinion piece’s thesis. The ones I didn’t like made me understand the hate for dystopias.
What a great contest! Thanks so much!! It's incredibly generous of you. You truly are a lovergirl! <3
I'm linking Fahrenheit 451 because I think having an e-book version of the book is just ironic enough to be hilarious, especially if it's the first e-book [and my first e-book ever!], and also because it's easily my favorite Ray Bradbury novel, and it's been a few years since I last read it! I also have been trying to collect all of his novels, and really besides the Martian Chronicles and his Zen in the Art of Writing stuff, Fahrenheit 451 is the last one I need!
You deserve far more than the thanks I can give! :)
Fahrenheit 451. I read this book in high school, and absolutely fucking adored it. It was prettymuch the only thing I read those entire years that I found really engaging and loved doing the work on. I found the world really amazing and the characters all really compelling, I became empathic of the whole story. I've got no idea why I don't own this book yet, haha. The more you read the more you know!
I was hoping at least that the publisher would have the sense not to use any DRM. However:
http://www.amazon.com/Fahrenheit-451-ebook/dp/B0064CPN7I/
Disallows the text-to-speech function. I could understand the e-book being made available DRM-free for more open e-book readers, but putting it on the locked-in, DRM-fested ecosystem of the Kindle is just... meh.
That said, the article's quote that "any new deal would include e-book rights" is silly. Bradbury could have easily found a dozen publishers that would be happy to keep printing copies of Fahrenheit 451 without any e-book deal involved.
edit: though the audiobook version at Audible.com has plenty of DRM around it already anyway, so ...
