I second the gift card for clothing idea and will add a few things that have come in handy for me since surgery. A portable food scale if he's weighing out his food, a nice water bottle, a nice food bag with decent containers (I'll link to the one that I love), and if he's a tattoo kinda guy a gift certificate to a good parlor could be the bigger X-Mas gift.
