Five years ago, I retrofitted dual flushes to all three of my American Standard toilets that are about 40 years old (3.5L/flush). The model I chose was one that requires a two-piece toilet and I had to remove the tank from the bowl to install it.

It was a pain in the ass to install - the tank was held in place using brass bolts with galvanized nuts that had frozen into place (I curse the installer that did that). I used my sawzall to remove them. Scrubbed the tanks and used the opportunity to clean out the water channels in the bowl with muriatic acid, so flushes work way better.

The replacement came with stainless steel bolts with wing-nuts to attach the tank to the bown and a silicone gasket in place of rubber. All put together it works great. My monthly water consumption used to be around 7000 gal/month. Now it fluctuates between 5000-6000 gal/month.

My experience has been positive. My total expense was under $100 for three toilets, but it took a lot of time. Adjusting the liquid flush setting was a little tricky.
