I think it was the first fountain pen that I bought when I first became interested. It was just a cheapie off of Amazon, F. Salvatore... something, something. Pretty much like this one except that it was silver with gold trim instead of black and with silver trim:

Looking back at my order history, I paid $12.67 and wasn't worth $.01. It never didn't have a hard start. Skipped frequently and weighed about 7 pounds. I threw it away once I bought a couple of Pilot Metropolitans.

I find it really amusing that this is now a "controversial" subject.

If I were to put my own advice to good use, I'd say, check the feed before you buy. For some reason this is not considered good advice here. Although plenty of "cheap" pens do indeed have good feeds and it's just checking that they do that this group seems to object to. They all seem to think I should blame myself, or blame the nib and look no further. Oh wait, I should look further by buying a $200 pen.

I don't think that's necessary.

https://www.amazon.com/Waterman-Hemisphere-Fountain-Medium-S0920630/dp/B004ML7HKO atm, it's $50, has visible comb

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B013GMB3CM/ref=twister_B0146LEZ54 atm, $36 look at the red barrel one for a decent under-view, again combs

https://www.amazon.com/F-Salvatore-Fountain-Plated-Refill-Converter/dp/B01HT2TNTU/ This brand actually shows you the underside and is currently $23

The bad ones I'm referring to have no visible comb or any other ink delivery system, just a flat feed with a tiny channel under the nib. I found one that made me laugh, it looks like the Salvatore one, except the comb is way way deep in the body of the pen, and only a thin and shallow channel reaches out under the nib.

It is also amusing to me that the current Waterman model no longer uses its own patented feed system. The comb wasn't originally Waterman. It would be interesting to know why that changed. Is it cheaper or do modern injection molds no longer include the spoon feed?

There were so many other directions this thread could've gone. I think it's far more likely that some manufacturers lack knowledge or don't bother to care once they've got your $30.

Personally I think we should return all the ones with bad feeds if we discover they are writing poorly, and learn to identify good feed systems. This makes the entire industry look bad.
