u/swhub - in 2018, I wouldn't spend $1200 on a still camera for filmmaking.
I understand that you're 15, and you want a camera for personal projects, but you still want the best value for your money - and right now, that's the $1295 Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K.
The BMPCC 4K records 10- bit ProRes and 12-bit losslessly compressed CinemaDNG RAW at up to 4K/60p, has dual card slots (CFast 2.0 and SD), a mini XLR mic input (w phantom power) and a headphone jack.
The A6500 is limited by its highly compressed 8-bit h.264 codec, 30fps maximum frame rate at 4K, single card slot, 3.5mm mic input and lack of a headphone jack.
Here is why you want to shoot 10-bit (at a minimum).
You would learn a lot more about filmmaking from the BMPCC 4K than you would from the A6500 (e.g., recording and grading 12-bit RAW or 10-bit ProRes instead of 8-bit h.264, monitoring your audio with a headphone jack, using phantom powered mics).
If you get the BMPCC 4K, you might also want to consider buying an XLR mic with balanced output instead of a consumer mic with a 3.5mm unbalanced output.
If you ever put the Videomic Pro on a boom and run a long cable back to your camera or an external recorder, you could get RF interference, since its output is unbalanced.
You won't have that problem with an XLR mic.
For $11 less than the $2312 you currently plan to spend, I recommend:
Here are a few pre-release sample videos shot at 4K in 12-bit losslessly compressed CinemaDNG RAW:
This one was shot in 12-bit RAW at 1080p:
These were shot at 4K in 10-bit ProRes 4:2:2:
Combining the BMPCC 4K with the Azden SGM-250CX will give you higher quality video and audio than the A6500 & the Videomic "Pro" - and for less money.
If you decide to go with this camera, you might also want to subscribe over at r/bmpcc and r/blackmagicdesign - lots of knowledgeable folks there who can help you get the most out of it.
I have one on pre-order and expect it in early October.
Hope this is helpful and good luck with finding the right first camera!
