Some of the best primary sources on slave revolts include various newspapers, court document, firsthand accounts, etc. Secondary sources are a synthesis of these primary sources and can vary in terms of quality. If you don't have the patience to go through microfilm and reference resources yourself, I would recommend looking through a good document collection like Major Problems in African American History. From Slavery to Freedom provides a good overview of some of the major slave revolts, maroon colonies, defenses by whites, etc that would be worth exploring.
The great lack of slave revolts early in the history of American slavery is often attributed to language and cultural barriers, coupled with an acute awareness of the consequences of revolting. Whites were excessively paranoid of slave uprisings and usually went to great trouble to ensure they kept their slaves in line, even if that meant severing a limb, flogging a slave's skin raw, or even killing one of the laborers as a message to the rest, though the latter would have been quite rare. Slaves could be quite expensive, after all. Finally, slaves generally lacked the arms, munitions, organization or manpower of their opponents. These conditions usually made the plight of revolting slaves quite difficult to put it lightly.
