Check out ["From Those Wonderful People Who Gave You Pearl Harbor,"] (http://www.amazon.com/Those-Wonderful-Folks-Pearl-Harbor/dp/1451609906), the highly-irreverent memoir of a Madison Ave. adman in the '60s.
Matthew Weiner credits it as direct inspiration for the series and you can see bits of it cropping up in the show from time to time. Fantastic read. The book progresses from the heyday of the '60s to the shifting sands of the business in the '70s, giving you a hint at where the show is headed.
I've not read it, but I've always heard good things about From Those Wonderful Folks Who Gave You Pearl Harbor: Front Line Dispatches from the Advertising War, by Jerry Della Femina. Apparently it was a big inspiration for Mad Men.
