>In Abilene, Ellsworth, Wichita, Dodge City, and Caldwell, for the years from 1870 to 1885, there were only 45 total homicides. This equates to a rate of approximately 1 murder per 100,000 residents per year.

>In Abilene, supposedly one of the wildest of the cow towns, not a single person was killed in 1869 or 1870.

This book is just one source out of thousands. He lists public records which cite:

>In Abilene, Ellsworth, Wichita, Dodge City, and
Caldwell, for the years from 1870 to 1885, there were only 45 total homicides. This equates to a rate of approximately 1 murder per 100,000 residents per year.
In
Abilene, supposedly one of the wildest of the cow towns, not a single person was killed in 1869 or 1870.

Compared to the 2007 numbers:

>DC – 183 Murders (31 per 100,000 residents)

New York – 494 Murders (6 per 100,000 residents)

Baltimore – 281 Murders (45 per 100,000 residents)

Newark – 104 Murders (37 per 100,000 residents)

And suggesting people just didn't report crimes is ridiculous. "I don't have evidence to support my side, so I'm going to make up a reason that says I don't have to believe your side, too." And we're not talking about methheads cooking in their bathtub, we're talking about violent crime in an era where the majority of people owned and/or carried firearms compared to today, where primarily criminals carry firearms.

> This isn't the wild west.

Here is a whole book that addresses the myth of the "wild west". It was statistically safer than New York City ever has been.

>I don't need some jackoff with a hero complex walking around waiting to find a criminal to shoot.

What you need, and reality, are two very separate things. When faced with a violent assailant, it's better to be armed than not. There's a lot of misconception I think we need to wade through, and if you're willing to spare me the vitriol, I can address some of your concerns.
